If you are looking for a brief respite from the daily humdrum of the city and do not wish to travel a long distance, then Nirala Resort in Mellock village near Deulti Railway Station, Howrah is a wonderful choice. It takes 1 hour and 15 minutes by local train from Howrah and approximately 1 and a half hours by car from Kolkata. Almost 20 acres of land full of trees and lush green fields engulf you with tranquility and peace. The only sound is the chirping of birds. No pollution and a safe haven. I stayed there for one night only, but was so impressed that I plan to spend a few days again in the near future. It's a very pocket-friendly resort. The tariff starts from Rs. 450/- per day for non-ac double room and goes up to Rs. 3000/-. There are a few suites and A/C cottages also. The rooms are spacious and clean. They have a dinning hall, gym and a swimming pool. The children will love swings, merry-go-rounds and seesaws. Food is very tasty and prices are reasonable. No outside food is allowed. If one goes there by car the driver can stay in the dormitory for Rs. 150/- only. Staff are very cordial, helpful and courteous. The residence of famous Bengali writer Sarat Chandra Chattyopadhyay and Rupnarayan river are only a few minutes drive. The resort also arranges the transportation. People also go there for picnics. Book in advance during winter and festival seasons, but otherwise one can usually get a room. Do not take any non-ac room on 2nd floor if it's not winter.
