I always wished to have a wireless router setup in my home for my broadband connection and when I got a chance to get a wireless router I was suggested by one of my friend to go for Linksys. Upon seeing a deal in circuit city I bought this wireless router LINKSYS WRT54G.

I just bumped into one problem as the power adapter was not compatible for our Indian environment and I bought a local 12v DC adapter. which seemed to work without any problem. The setup did not take much of a time and within half an hour I was get set go to surf the net.

Initial honeymoon period was so nice... I loved being able to browse the internet from anywhere in my home, ... Study, balcony, bedroom ..

But remember Spiderman dialogue " With Great Power Comes GreatResponsibility*" Wireless router can be a risk , the recent blast in Ahmadabad/Delhi the terror email sender had used the network of such unwary users. so consider the following tips

  1. Change Default Administrator Passwords (and Usernames)

  2. Turn on (Compatible) WPA / WEP Encryption

  3. Change the Default SSID

  4. Enable MAC Address Filtering

  5. Disable SSID Broadcast

  6. Do Not Auto-Connect to Open Wi-Fi Networks

  7. Assign Static IP Addresses to Devices

  8. Enable Firewalls On Each Computer and the Router

  9. Position the Router or Access Point Safely and last but not the least

  10. Turn Off the Network During Extended Periods of Non-Use
