I am not that 100% positive as dilhindustani is. Why?
Well, for starters:
Gameknot admins have a US-perspective on things. They want to have players from all around the world, but seem to have a problem understanding that people from all over the world come from different cultures thus also expressing themselves in different ways. Most persons think in their own language and try to translate to english. Best thing would be if Gameknot either acknowledged the fact that they ought to be proud of players from all over the world and not ridicule those who are not that good in english - or put up a banner ''non-US residents not accepted''.
Cheating. Yes, there is maybe not a lot of cheating on Gameknot, but it is obvious for anyone that has played club chess before. But, so it is on most online chess sites like Playcess and others. Difference is - Playchess (Thomas Stahl) at least tries to stop the cheaters when they are exposed. On Gameknot you get the feeling that it is a bigger crime to be bad in english than to use computers or multiple accounts.
On the game: Well, neither better or worse than any other website with free chess.
There are league games that are quite fun, but my favourite is the team games. if you want to meet a lot of really nice persons from al over the world, and don't take the game tooo seriously, then gameknot is worth joining if not only for the team games.
However - do not waste your money on purchasing a premium account. Since there is no problem whatsoever to recieve almost the same for free by using multiple accounts, then why pay? It almost seems lik e the Gameknot people don't WANT people to pay.
To me Gameknot is not as good as ICC or Playchess. I can't recommend anyone to actually pay for it, since there are other chess-services online that are far better.
