There is big difference between Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas and Bimal Roy’s Devdas of 1955. Bimal Roy’s Devdas was masterpiece Dilip Kumar is not called the ‘tragedy king’ for no good reason, after playing Devdas he underwent psychosomatic assistance, in that time Suchitra Sen (she was Bengali, and mother of Mun Mun Sen) was really in love with Dilip Kumar. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas costs big budget movie, but it was not realistic in olden days if you go through Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel. Roy made Devdas where you are watching a village and not a palace as Bhansali described in new version. In olden days Chandermukhi’s kotha or clothes are not that elaborate, as in Madhuri’s Kotha and clothes. Madhuri played like queen rather than Chandermukhi.
Bimal Roy was originally from Orissa where total culture and language are very similar to Benagli so what old Devdas was made by Bimal Roy, you can say that Roy made the village perfect. In olden days as in Chattopadhyay’s novel Zamindar had not sparkling houses as in new Devdas. Shahrukh is Shahrukh who can’t speak dialogue in fluently, (look his back striked like k k k kkiran), whereas Dilip Kumar symbolized the real Devdas that impressed him as tragedy king.
The music is sweet and songs seem to appear you the lyrics are deep and perfectly suited to the story, what is the means of “Dola re dola” in new Devdas.
Remember Chandermukhi was in Kotha, she adores and hopelessly love Devdas, but Devdas dreamt for Paro In new version, Chandermukhi sings a song “Mar Dala” to attract Devdas, in same situation you will find realistic and meaning full song in old Devdas.
jise tu qubool kar le vo adaa kahaaN se laaooN
tere dil ko jo lubhaa le vo sadaa kahaaN se laaooN
jise tu qubool kar le
main vo phool hooN ke jisko gayaa har koi masal ke
meri umr bah gayee hai mere aaNsuoN mein Dhal ke -2
jo bahaar ban ke barse vo ghaTaa kahaaN se laaooN
tere dil ko jo...
tujhe aur ki tamannaa mujhe teri aarzoo hai
tere dil mein Gham hi Gham hai mere dil mein tu hi tu hai -2
jo diloN ko chain de de vo davaa kahaaN se laaooN
tere dil ko jo...
meri bebasi hai zaahir meri aah-e-be-asar se
kabhi maut bhi jo maaNgi to na paayee uske dar se -2
jo muraad le ke aaye vo duaa kahaaN se laaooN
tere dil ko jo
So there is no way to compare Bhansali’s Devdas except for the truth is it can boast stunning color and big budget complicated set. Roy’s Devdas has in it pain, and perfectly realistic emotions expressed by actors. Watching Devdas (old) with crying end up really melt one’s heat. There is over act and stylized dialogue in new Devdas. Devdas (Shahrukh Khan) said, “so much beauty is not right for a person to have, even the moon cannot be as vain as you, Paro responded, “but the moons scarred.” Then Devdas whipped a pearl necklace at her forehead scarring her… this is real filmy dialogue and overact. Same situation in old Devdas, Dilip Kumar hits Paro with a stick and then tear a bandage from his own clothes…is not a realistic heart touched scene.
