Devdas actually based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novella, and story ideas was created on the land of Bengal. The third color version, first Devdas was made in 1935, role played by Saigal, second in 1955, role played by thespian and tragedy king Dilip Kumar, for no reason Dilip Kumar is called a tragedy king after he played Devdas.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas is highly highly structured and most expensive Bollywood film of the time it was made. It was heavy budget film approximately US$ 10.9 million (this record has been surpassed by Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna). The movie was highest industry standards, jewelry and sari, sari and ghaghra were heavily weighted, that weighed the actress down, it is said that ghaghra “in dola re dola’ was 16 kilogram. The song ‘Dola re dola’ became a hit because of the unique dance and digital duet.
Devdas and Parvati (Paro) grow up with love and hate relationship which changes to love when they mature. Devdas comes from a rich and wealthy family. His dad didn’t agree to accept Paro as daughter in law even any friendship with Paro. His dad sends him away to Calcutta. Paro gets married to a much older and rich man who has grown up son and daughter. Devdas realized that he is unable to give up his love for Paro. He returns village and falls into a bad company and alcohol. He was introduced to a dancer Chandermukhi, who adores him and falls desperately in love with him. Devads spend his most of his time in alcoholic daze and lust for Paro. When he realized his days were numbered he returned to Paro’s doorstep as was he promised. Paro realized it was Devdas who was outside dying. She ran, but her husband order to lock all the doors, Paro set crying, a feet away from Devdas, with a door keep them apart.
There is big difference between Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas and Bimal Roy’s Devdas of 1955. Bimal Roy’s Devdas was masterpiece Dilip Kumar is not called the ‘tragedy king’ for no good reason, after playing Devdas he underwent psychosomatic assistance, in that time Suchitra Sen (she was Bengali, and mother of Mun Mun Sen) was really in love with Dilip Kumar.
Remember Chandermukhi was in Kotha, she adores and hopelessly love Devdas, but Devdas dreamt for Paro In new version, Chandermukhi sings a song “Mar Dala” to attract Devdas, what's the means of Mar dala...this time we can you injured me, or some one mad for love...
in same situation you will find realistic and meaning full song in old Devdas
jise tu qubool kar le vo adaa kahaaN se laaooN
tere dil ko jo lubhaa le vo sadaa kahaaN se laaooN
main vo phool hooN ke jisko gayaa har koi masal ke
meri umr bah gayee hai mere aaNsuoN mein Dhal ke) -2
jo bahaar ban ke barse vo ghaTaa kahaaN se laaooN
tujhe aur ki tamannaa mujhe teri aarzoo hai
tere dil mein Gham hi Gham hai mere dil mein tu hi tu hai) -2
jo diloN ko chain de de vo davaa kahaaN se laaooN
Roy’s Devdas has in it pain, and perfectly realistic emotions expressed by actors. Watching Devdas (old) with crying end up really melt one’s heart. So comperatively old one is masterpiece and far better than new version.
