After seeing the movie ‘Arrival’(nominated for 8 Oscars including best picture this year), I am more convinced about my conviction that there is something which helps our humanity to survive in spite of our self-inflicting sins and it will forever!. It is an amazing science fiction film which has more philosophical outreach compared to a conventional over the top sci-fi flick. It is a story about 12 alien spacecraft land on Earth at different places spooking people all over the world. U.S. officials ask linguistics professor Dr. Louise Banks to team with theoretical physicist Dr. Ian Donnelly and learn how to communicate with the visitors. While Louise races to learn the aliens' language, uneasy governments around the globe debate the advisability of military action. Here you see a different depiction of the ‘aliens’ which have seen in recent times in movies. They are unlike the aliens portrayed in films like ‘Alien’ trilogy or ‘Independence day’. These are the non-destructive extra-terrestrials who have come to give a very important gift to mankind: Language; which we have forgotten as a communication tool in our world somehow. It emphasizes the point that there is more to a translation of a language known as interpretation, sometimes which is the difference between war and peace. One gets absorbed to the narrative having greater implications in the future to our mankind. The treatment of the movie done by the director Denis Villeneuve is really fascinating. One can draw parallels with movies like ‘Interstellar’ and ‘close encounters with a third kind’ but it is far more appealing because of its emotional cords rather and low content of sci-fi jargons. The screenplay of the movie has perfect pace and good interwoven story with greater purpose. Famous actors Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker have played their parts very well but truly the movie belongs to Amy Adams as Dr. Banks. Her expressions in the movie with respect to different events are priceless. Whether it is the sense of excitement of a discovery or fears for the future of the mankind and of course her pain. As a viewer you could feel what she feels which is a huge credit to her as an actress(that’s why I am bit disappointed that she is not nominated as an actress in a leading role in Oscars this year). One can redefine the concept of time after experiencing the movie. The most important take away for me from the movie is that we should embrace our life even if we know our future. Life is beautiful in spite of its high and lows, victories and defeats and gains and loses. As it is described aptly by the sentence “Life’s a journey, not a destination”, we must accept the two universal truths: Life and Death. Enjoying the journey of life is worthier than to worry about the inevitable.
