I recently shifted from Hyderabad where I had an Airtel broadband connection to Mumbai. It is only after coming to Mumbai that I realised how cheap and reliable my Airtel Hyderabad connection was. I paid no installation, a monthly charge of 500 + taxes which gave me free unlimited download at night (9PM to 8AM) + 150 free calls on the Airtel phone accompanying the connection + 400 MB day time download. The speed was almost always near 256 kbps + unlimited free local calls to 3 mobiles (this was probably only for first 3 months).
The airtel guys even came to my house to collect the monthly checks !!
I now stay in Andheri (W) but Airtel is not available in the society :(. I have to go for MTNL which charges me rental for the phone (~170 is the cheapest) + night unlimited is from 0000 hrs to 0800 hrs only (for which I have to switch on the modem again) + the charges are 590 per month + I have to buy a 1700 rupees worth modem from outside.
So, I am moving from about Rs 550 per month (incl taxes) for 256 kbps night unlimited (9 PM - 8 AM) + 150 rupees worth calls free + great convenience in bill payment ...
To about Rs 850 per month (incl taxes) for 256 kbps + lower time night surfing (12 PM to 8 AM) + inconvenience in terms of restarting my modem each time + a "dud" phone + Rs 1700 investment + inconvenience in bill payment. Is there justice in this world ... ?
These Government backed idiots need some good competition - only then will they come out with better plans and tariff. God knows which moron came up with this idiotic plan.
