This 1957 musical love story on the background of a crime with comedy interwoven and starring Kishore Kumar and Vijayantimala in the lead, is loosely based on or can be considered a variation of Shakespeare’s popular play Hamlet.

Aasha (hope) ultimately leads a man to his destination, but before that it presents itself in various colours. Bellapore estate jagirdar, Hasmukhlal at the insistence of his sister Durgawati send his only son Kishore (Kishore Kumar) to Bombay with the hope that he will on his return shoulder the responsibilities of the administeration of the estate as his heir, the next jagirdar.

On the other hand, Durgawati’s son Raj (Pran) turns out to be reincarnation of devil himself. While his marriage is being arranged to the loving-niece of millionaire, Chamanlal, Nirmala (Vijayantimala), he consorts illicit relationship with Kamini with the false promise of a marriage in the near future. Little does he know that the Nirmala is smitten by the flamboyant and handsome, Kishore.

Raj lays a trap for Kishore and declares him as the murderer of Kamini’s father. Kamini’s father’s death renders Nirmala helpless. Raj taking the advantage of Nirmala’s guardian’s mental condition takes him in his custody.

Kishore, masquerading as an Arab, launches a theatre company and resolves the conflict by performing a play before an audience conbsisting of real life characters to whom the play is addressed.

The film, inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet has many twists and turns making the whole viewing entertaining. Add to this fare the comic sense of Kishore Kumar and his abilities to deliver cinematic histrionics in his flamboyant style; it turns the mundane affair rather interesting. Vijayantimala looks sweet and ever innocent, she meted out an average performace. Meeting step with step in the popular song of the movie is Minoo Mumtaz, sister of popular comedian Mehmood and herself a popular character actor. Om Prakash and Lalita Pawar are in their elements as ever.

This is the film that has the funny rap ‘Ina meena dika rika…’ effortlessly rendered by Kishore Kumar. The song is perhaps one of those songs that every Kishore Kumar clones train themselves to reach the summit. The other song that would enthrall you is ‘Are chote aur bade... ek padosi raat ko soye...’

This is a not to be missed movie, catch it up on Ultra DVD, priced at MRP of Rs.299/-
