This is a debut novel by Vince Flynn, a new American author who is sure to get into the league of Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum and David Baldacci. This is a political thriller set in present day United States which has a plot that is so relevant and appealing that we in India are made to wonder, “ Oh God! We thought only we are saddled with lousy politicians!” It seems politicians everywhere are same and citizens everywhere are equally disgusted with them. Declaration of independence mentioned that the Governments derive their just powers from the consent of those Governed, if the Government becomes destructive, the people not only have the right but also it is their duty to alter, abolish such government and institute a new one. This is the basic underlying idea of this adrenaline packed thriller. What if the leaders are held accountable for their broken promises and are made to pay for their misdeeds? Every one of us would like to see such a thing happening. This is the basic plot of this exciting, provocative thriller.
Three of the most influential politicians are killed with surgical precision by unknown assassins who have vanished in thin air. FBI-CIA investigations aren’t yielding any results except pointing towards possible involvement of highly trained commandos of Special forces/Defense. Killers have delivered a shocking ultimatum to the political establishment to put their act together and start immediate reforms process to stem the rot that is eating away the entire polity and the governance or face further killings including that of the President. The whole establishment is running helter skelter, President is desperate to get his budget passed and pitch for re-election, His NSA advisor and Chief of Staff have their own shady plans, opposition wants to hurt but is afraid to strike, Investigative agencies are clue-less, citizens seem to be enjoying the specter. Who are the killers, why are they doing it? Will they be caught? What happens then? Read this interesting, crisp, fast paced thriller for answers. I sure did enjoy a thriller after a long gap.
Flynn has a racy style of writing that packs well-researched information packed in forceful, simple yet effective language sans any pomp and glamour. Though characterization leaves a lot to be desired, Flynn is a good story teller but is unable to create sharply etched, well developed, unforgettable characters like Tom Clancy does. Flynn surely has a great potential to hit the best seller lists in years to come.
