I am a child at heart and will always be. I have been watching Tom & Jerry since maybe I learnt to walk and have been enthralled by it. Its amazing how the traditional enmity still lives on and is popular even now. Jerry with his cheeky antics and the hilarious Tom who most of the time ends up getting what he least expects, either a dog behind him or a long growing bump on his head.
These lovable characters created by the duo William Hanna & Joseph Barbera and who are also famous for creating a host of other characters have come a long long way since their creation. Interestingly Tom and Jerry made their debut as early as 1940's when they danced for the first time with none other than the immortal Gene Kelly in the motion pictures Anchors Awayand Invitation to Danceand also with Esther Williams in Dangerous When Wet. They drifted into oblivion when MGM closed down its studios in 1957.
Tom and Jerry was again revived by MGM from 1961 to 1967. The quality of animation, soundtrack and story was no way as good as the one started by Hannah Barbara. Then Chuck Jones and Les Goldman took over the Tom & Jerry series. Although the quality improved they sure could not reach the level of quality or fun Hannah Barbara Did.
In fact if you compare the series directed by Fred Quimby and the new Tom and Jerry series by Chuck Jones and company, there is a lot of difference. The one directed by Quimby was original, fresh and the concept was brilliant. The violence was not ?violent? in a way but funny. The new series had a lot more violent scenes which were not funny, it actually made you wince.
Alas gone are the days when I could see my favourite shows on cartoon network. What with the introduction of some set top box in Chennai it?s a long time since I have watched any of the cartoon shows ( by the way to those interested a set top box costs about Rs 5000/-)
On the brighter side, I have a lot of Cd?s of the Quimby directed series. (Well it was cassettes but I had them converted to Cd?s. I am that crazy about them!!)
Enjoy the show everyone
