Internet Browser War
Sep 29, 2009 08:06 AM

As I have used only 4 browsers in my life, I would be concentrating only on those 4 browsers. They are Internet Explorer, Opera, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

Internet Explorer :

As we all know 67% of net users prefer IE as their default browser as it comes packaged with Windows. But as I have used it I know that IE is the worst browser atleast in the 4 that I've used. It is damn slow in displaying the contents of the website. Also it hangs if overstressed by loading many heavy pages. IE7 and IE8 have improved a bit with additional features like tabs, InPrivate browsing, but still lags a lot from its competitors. Its interface is good and has large viewing area, which is the problem with Mozilla Firefox. It has the option of saving webpages in single file format, ie. MHTML on your HDD, but when you try to open it when offline it mostly fails to open or takes lot of time to open as searces for it again from internet. Also for saving the file it does not use the opened data but downloads the data all over again from internet, which is a waste. Internet Explorer does not come with a inbuilt downloader but can be integrated to many downloaders avilble like DAP, FDM, IEpro, etc. IE cannot open WAP sites which is a major drawback.

Mozilla Firefox :

Mozilla Firefox has 23% users globally. Mozilla has less viewing area as major part of the screen is gobbled up by the toolbars and menubar which is too big. It is comparatively faster than IE. Also it has good features like tab, inbuilt Downloader which is well to do but still lot to improve. It alos comes as default browser in Linux installations. Latest version available is 3.5.3.

Opera :

Opera has 2% users. It is low because of its policy of not advertising. Opera mini, the version for mobiles is the leading mobile browser in the world. Opera is the fastest browser in the world. It displays text content first so that the user can get information first and then when all the text is displayed goes for images which generally don't matter a lot. Its status bar is highly informative. It gives details like % of page opened, data received or sent by page in KBs, also displays the process that it is currently performing. When the processing of page is done the status bar automatically disappears, unlike other browsers where they stay, thus increasing the viewing area. Opera is embedded with a downloader, which has to improve a lot. Also includes BitTorrent client which great, and Email client which no other browsers includes. Opera can stop displaying images and sounds if selected and it can even identify itself as any other browser on internet if required. For slower internet connections it also has turbo feature where it gets the data in compressed form which increases its speed automatically. Also it saves pages in form of MHTML from the page opened earlier and doesn't get data again from internet as in IE, and opening it is also fast. Latest version of Opera is 10 and opera Mini is 4.

Google Chorme :

Google chrome is relatively new browser but has market share of 3%. It is created by taking inputs from all the browsers available in world so integrates all features combined. Its is faster than all browsers. It has the highest viewing area compared to all the browsers in the world. It has inbuilt downloader. It also has InCognito window where history is maintained. Its status bar is not informative and we do not know when the process is going on. The status bar comes and goes at its wish, which is a bad inclusion. Also if you have your passwords and usernames saved then you are definitely going to leak it as it displays all the usernames and passwords saved in it which is never advisable. also it has to be installed from internet and not an offline setup. Its latest version is 3.0(stable) and 4.0(beta).

Conclusion :

My conclusion is that comparing all the browsers above, Opera is the best browser available at our disposal, Which is fast and feature packed. I myself use Opera 10.

Google Chrome: Beautiful Web Browser
Oct 22, 2008 09:06 AM

Google Chrome is a nice Browser

presently available for download. Chrome is backed by Google which is

renouned for their quality product. It is an Open Source product and

is available for Free. It released its first Beta version in 2nd

September 2008 for Windows(for XP with service pack 2 and Vista). In

coming days Chrome will be available for MAC and Linux too.

Chromes first attraction, I like the

best is its simplicity. Those who like the Simple and smart looking

Google web page must be fascinated with this same type simple but

smart looking Google Chrome Browser. It provides more open space in

your monitor. Google chrome is very secure browser. It periodically

downloads the updates of two blacklists, one for phishing and one for

malware, and warn its users from viewing harmful sites. Google Chrome

supports tabbed browsing. So opening a lot of pages in the same

window is not a problem with it. Unlike Firefox, google chrome starts

a different process as soon as a new tab is opened. It is part of

Googles better security module. I experienced the feature like

opening of different adjacent browsers pages rather than opening of

different windows under the same browser. Another nice feature in

this tabbed browsing is, while you click on a link and the link opens

a new window, it will automatically place itself just after the next

immediate tab from the link you have clicked while in case of firefox

it uses the last tab. In google chrome, there is only a single text

input box which can be used as address bar as well as the search box.

It will also help you to autocomplete your search from its huge

database. Google Chrome provides the thumbnails of your recently

visited pages while you open a new tab, and you can go directly to

that page clicking on the thumbnail. In case of downloading a file, it

gives the status of download at the left bottom of the browser.

Chrome offers a nice feature, the Incognito mode. In incognito mode,

the temporary files are not saved in your computer. All the temporary

files automatically be deleted as soon as you close the browser. This

might be used for opening such pages where you do not want to save

your inputs like the usernames, passwords and other personal

information as well as it will not also store the cookies in the

cache. This is a great security feature as it deletes all the

temporary files as soon as you close it.Another nice feature is that

you can Isolate misbehaving tabs. Use google chromes task manager to

isolate(close) that particular tab which seemed to be misbehaving by

some web page without completely shutting down google chrome. This

poweful task manager can also provide you about the memory usage for

each opened tab.

I used it from the very first day, and

I am satisfied with it. Though I feel it a bit slower than Firefox.

Still I must encourage everybody to use it. At last but not the least

it is backed by the helping google technicians. I like google Chrome.

IE 7 now matches Firefox...
Nov 12, 2006 08:00 PM

I had Used IE 7.0 beta version for some time from M$oft.

I felt that It was too slow than IE 6.0 So when we had the IE 7.0 Stable Release I wanted to have a look at it.

So I Downloaded IE 7.0 From Microsoft Site.

To start With MIcrosoft First Validates Whether You Have a Genuine OS Or not

Luckily It seemed I had a Valid Copy of Windows XP SP2 So I could Go ahead With Download.

It took a long time For Downloading and Update and Install REquired Updates after Downloading 15 MB installer.

Finally After about 1 hour( as I have a slow Dial up Connection.)

Everything just Worked Fine.

Finally I Must Congratulate Microsoft For Providing a Browser That Looks As good as Firefox.

OK . Microsoft has added one more feature Quicktab CTRL+ Q in addition to Tabbed Browsing.

Phishing Filter Which is a New Security Feature That Validates a Whether A web site is Fake one or Genuine.

You can have Customized Search engine Preferences.

But I Could Set Only Google as My search Engine.( for Once)

Although FireFox Gives a Variety of Choices.

It seems That IE 7.0 is at least twice as fast as IE 6.0  although I am not convinced in speed it matches Firefox.2.0

Even FireFoxHas Come up With Latest  FireFox 2.0

Which has Features like Web Form SpellCheck.

Seems Now There Is a healthy Competition Between IE and FireFOx.

Now that More people Will Start Using IE 7.0 Only After MicroSoft Vista Release.

It is to be seen whether we do not have new exploits built for IE 7.0 as with Previous IE versions.

I am Sure Microsoft is now already ready to take up challenges posed by Various Exploits.

Not unlike In past Releasing Patches after a lot Damage is done.

What opera also offers...
Oct 18, 2005 08:30 PM

I hate IE. I just hate it. Use it for a few days, and u have spyware and trojans enjoying a picnic on your pc.

The good thing is that we have alternatives, alternatives in the form of Mozilla Firefox and Opera. These are simply great and u dont need to be an IE user to use them. They are offered for free on their respective websites.  Popups are easily blocked by both, which reduces the time taken for a page to load especially on dial up connections.

Opera offers u tabbed browsing by default, that being an easy to reach option in Firefox, but this isnt exactly a con, is it? Opera offers u the option of using mouse gestures if u use them for the first time, and it even has voice options. That is a 11mb file which u will have to download. Once u open opera, u will notice the side bar with the commonly used buttons. But u can have it removed. One small problem I experienced with opera was that download accelerator wudnt integrate easily with it. But it did with firefox. Again not a very bad con. Opera has an inbuilt download manager which can resume downloads once they are broken, unlike firefox. But then u can use DAP with firefox.

Both are excellent browsers with a lot of features, like tabbed browsing, popup blocking and much more. And easily customisable with themes, cool!

What Firefox offers a user
Sep 21, 2005 11:49 AM

Well, to start with, I have been an avid user of Firefox since from the days it was firebird(phoenix). I have really liked the new aspects introduced in teh browser, like tabbed browsing, find as you type, pop-up blocking etc. So does that mean that it is better than the browser, IE, by the software giant Microsoft. Of course, Yes. I would not state security as the primary reason for that though many do. Rather I would say Firefox adheres better to web standards than does IE. Conforming to the web standards, really makes the web application portable across platforms(Linux, Windows, Solaris etc) and also the users will not be forced to use a single platform for viewing a webpage. And about vulnerability, all softwares are vulnerable and that cannot be taken into account for  proclaiming that the software is better in any way.  Even firefox had some critical vulnerabilities that were fixed later. But why I would say that firefox is better is that I has a very good user experience, and being extensions based allows to add many features that are not found in the actual browser. though extensions bloat up the browser, they are quite useful and handy in most cases, for example, the spiderzilla extension downloads the entire site, Flashgot redirects the downloads to a download manager etc. Tabbed browsing is offered by other similar browser IE-based(Maxthon, Avant Browser, etc) and non-IE based(K-Meleon, Opera etc). But apart from other things Firefox has all what the normal user expects and not bloated with unused features.
