Phoonk Movie Reviews

The movie is reasonably good in Indian standards
Jul 17, 2015 01:56 PM 3033 Views (via Mobile)

I like horror movies some times I remember phoonk was so worst movie .today I'm going to review about it.Its not so scary.

A lot of hype was given to this movie because of the contest in which the participant had to view the movie alone in the theater. I'm not going to go much into the story as it is simply about a non- believer being haunted by the supernatural and his family.

Performances are good. Background Score, Visuals, camera angles etc were supposed to play a major role in a movie which was made to scare.Sudeep impresses you with an excellent performance. Amruta Khanvilkar is efficient.

Baby Ahsaas Channa makes a strong impression. Ashwini Kalsekar is top notch. Zakir Hussain's tantric act is superb. Ganesh Yadav lends good support. K.K. Raina and Lilette Dubey, both doctors, are competent. Kenny Desai, Anu Ansari and the actress enacting the role of Sudeep's mother are perfect.

On the whole PHOONK is a fascinating cinematic experience on a subject that's rarely tackled by the dream merchants in Bollywood

1st is obviously the attempt to scare the hell out of you. But honestly speaking it does not succeed in it..(at least to me it wasn’t, because for me benchmark from RGV’s horror collection is the movie called RAAT…. any day the most scary movie by him)

Though the 2nd attempt to showcase the belief people have in black magic is quite a successful one. The above written first line is actually a dialogue from the movie and let me tell you it is one of the high points in the movie as it pops up the big question of wether things like black magic actually exist or are they just whims and fancies of a creative/destructive mind.

In retrospect this movie has made a strong attempt that it’s not just a belief and something like this actually exists.

It’s a good one time see. Apart from the performances of the famous theatre artists in the movie the rest of the performances are weak and could have been much much better.

Phoonk is not flawless, but still it deserves the highest praise. A film with no known star cast and made on a budget of just Rs. 3 crores manages to attract audiences and achieve the ‘Hit’ status-a very big achievement, considering the fact that nowadays even multi-starrers and films starring superstars fail miserably. I had missed this film in theatres. 2 months back, I won its VCD after I participated in an online survey! And now that I am free, I finally saw this film last week. As mentioned earlier, the film has some minuses but overall, it manages to entertain, thrill and scare a bit too!

The story of the movie: Rajiv (Sudeep) is a rich and successful construction engineer, living in a posh duplex house in Mumbai. He has a lovely wife Aarti (Amruta Khanvilkar), adorable children, Raksha (Ahsaas Channa) and Rohan (Shrey Bawa) and a god-fearing mother (Jyothi Subhash). Rajiv is an atheist and doesn’t believe even in the existence of God or evil forces. But one day, his daughter Raksha gets falls into the trap of demonic forces and this compels Rajiv to get out of his beliefs and take necessary action against it. But how would Rajiv do it? And who is behind these evil acts? Watch Phoonk to find out!

Many may not like Phoonk but one can’t deny the fact that the film engrosses the viewer right from the first scene and keeps everyone glued to the screen till the end. The film doesn’t send the chill down the spine but there are ample thrilling moments in the film which makes it interesting. The intro scenes, when the titles roll, set the mood. Rajiv’s outburst at the party and the villains making their evil plan were too good. But Raksha being possessed by evil powers takes the film to a high (especially the school scene-fantastic!).

What doesn’t work is that Phoonk doesn’t scare at all. The film was publicized as a total horror film and many expected it to be scarier than RGV’s Bhoot. And due to these high expectations, many were disappointed with the film. What also bewilders is that how come Rajiv became an atheist, when his mother was a staunch believer in God? No light was thrown on Rajiv’s past regarding this. And the climax could have been shot better.

The best performance in the film is undoubtedly given by Ahsaas Channa! The girl, who has always acted as boy before (‘she’ was seen as ‘he’ in Vaastu Shastra, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna etc!) does an extraordinary job. It was a very difficult task in her hands but she came out with flying colours. And it’s really shocking to see that her performance was never considered during awards. When preparing a list of best child artistes of 2008, everyone remembered only Aman Siddiqui(Bhoothnath), Purav Bhandare (Tahaan), Dwij Yadav (Heroes) and Manjit Singh (‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’). Not a single award even nominated her for any award. Very unfortunate!

Sudeep was rocking and a powerful performer. He’ll be seen next in RGV’s forthcoming Rann as Amitabh Bachchan’s son. Amruta Khanvilkar also delivers a fantastic performance. Lileete Dubey as Dr Seema was excellent and it was great to see her after a long time! Ashwini Kaleskar shines in her over-the-top performance! K K Raina looked every inch a doctor. Zakir Hussain and Jyothi Subhash surprise with their powerful performance. Ganesh Yadav lent able support. Others were good.

A ‘horror’ flick of Ram Gopal Verma is bound to have flawless cinematography and background score. Sure enough, background score (Amar Mohile) was perfect, providing the thrills at the precise scary moments. Savita Singh’s cinematography was raw and unusual and does total justice to the setting in the film. But she falters in the climax.

Milnd Gadagkar wrote the story and screenplay of the film which without a shred of doubt fantastic! Kudos to him for writing a plot based on superstition and tantra-mantra stuff (how many times has it been attempted before?)! Screenplay is top notch and the magical Ram Gopal Verma touches helps to make things better. They could have done a better job in the climax but nevertheless, a great effort by the entire team!

Some of the best scenes:

  1. The intro scene

  2. Madhu (Ashwini Kalsekar) at Rajiv’s house

  3. The party scene

  4. Raksha suddenly goes missing

  5. Bones and lemon found at Rajiv’s place!

  6. Raksha at the school (marvelous scene!)

  7. The docs treating Raksha at home

  8. Murtaza (Zakir Hussain) at Rajiv’s home

On the whole, Phoonk is a nice timepass entertainer. It is definitely not horrifying as it was promoted and has some flaws too. But still, it works and can easily be seen once on a lazy Sunday afternoon!

Well !! Ramu has gone mad is what comes to the mind after the movie finishes. I was waiting till the last few minutes as I thought that there would be some message sent out in relation to Science & Superstition. But to my disappointment he just made sure that I am not pleased.

Somebody told me that the background score is the strenth of RGV like 'Govinda Govida' in Sarkar, but in this movie it was just to irritate not to scare at all. HE DISAPPOINTS... ROBS OUR MONEY... MAKES SURES THAT WE STILL BELIEVE IN SUPERNATURAL. Well... enough of it now....

If you are a die hard fan of RGV.. then I would suggest you to give this movie a skip and wait for another one. Otherwise, you are certainly gonna start looking for another one to follow. For the ones who aren't that much a fan of Ramu aura, don't even think about the movie. If he keeps on with this kind of performance, I am afraid that the day will soon come when there will only him watching the movie alone and then, the producers will come to ask him 'ITNA SANNATTA KYUN HAI RAMU'. I could not give a lesser rating as there ain't no negative allowed here on Mouthshut.

Whn I set to see movie, I was feared abt the moview promos, trailor which I saw earlier. But Whn the movie was started and 1/2 hrs passed, I thought who come nxt to mk me laugh.

The person set nxt to my seat lirelly told the "Bhai, Koi to dara to mujhe, meri toh hasi hi nahi ruk rahi".Just my frnt sit 2 kids of 6-7 yrs plying hr n thr and ask mummy, "Yeh Aunty itna kyu has rahi hai".

I felt tht if I acpt Ramu challenge to wath this movie alone and won Rs. 500000, thn surly I shd b the winner.

I feared the earlier movie of Ramu named "Darna mama hai". This is horrible and mk fear on yur face but Phhonk, as thy publish like, one of the horrible moviw of the yr, thr is nthng like tht. Now I plan to see movie 1920. lets see wht Vikram bhat did in his movie to mk the audience thrills......

Is it a Horror Movie?
Sep 02, 2008 03:11 PM 2961 Views

Another blunder by ram gopal verma! This is the first horror movie which made me feel bored! The story is not so good though the script has been handled very well in some parts of the movie, at the same time it has been handled very badly in some other parts of the movie and it makes u feel bored.

This is quite a short move and more than half the movie is spent in false horror scenes! Something like there is a sound--> He follows the direction of the sound--> He finds nothing.

Then suddenly he feels that his daughter is calling him--> He turns back and finds his small daughter in blood stains--> His mother calls him from the front direction--> He turns to his mother and suddenly she streaches her hand to kill him-->Suddenly he opens his eyes--> and thanks god it was a DREAM!!

I literally laughed out of the chair after some of such 'Horror' scenes ended (It must have been a comedy movie:-) This kind of scenes can be seen once or twice but for more than one hour in a two and odd hour movie?

Well thats very boring and sometimes feel suffocating and running off leaving the movie! Now thats what most of the movie is like and if you like such scenes and give it the name as a horror movie, then definately PHOONK is a HORROR movie, and if you like such movies OR you have a lots of time to waste then go for it!

Phoonk - nothing scary BUT good movie
Aug 29, 2008 12:49 AM 2978 Views

For all the people going Phoonk considering that they will get scared, let me clarify. Tthis - it is NOT horror movie but it is movie based on BLACK MAGIC. Nowif you don’t understand the difference between this, you lose your all expectations watching this film

There are no scary faces, no that great sound effects that shek you up. I really wonder on which basis, RGV Company announced 5 lac for who sits alone and watches the movie. Everybody can do that and in that way, he might lose all his money earned out of Satya and Rangeela!

Well, let us talk about the movie now. Sudeep suits as Contractor, in fact very good acting. Ehsaas as a child captured by black magic is okay and not award winning. The dispute between doctors and aged people is shown nicely! Granny of Ehsaas (Raksha) always tries to make all the family member understand that there is Black Magic and medical science can do nothing about it.

Sudeep who is shown atheist denies all that asks believing in God including the demand of workers at his site to build a temple where they had found a stone resembling Ganapati. What I liked the most is movie’s end wherein Sudeep’s wife (ah, she is very beautiful!) says him that thier daughter is saved only by dint of doctor who is child psychiatric!

So finally, The movie is NOT scary, all can watch (including children.... yes...!) Again, don’t waste your money if you think you will see scenes something those were in Exorcist! There is no blood, ghost, devil, evil, horror etc. Go and Watch it by all means...!

Even Kids can Watch Phoonk Alone....
Aug 27, 2008 04:41 PM 9518 Views

Yes there were two kids of around 10-12 years of age came with their family to watch the most scary movie and they were all fine at the end.

I was eagerly waiting for this movie since I have seen one of the promotional poster in one cinema hall.the promotional poster as well as the website is really attractive but the movie does not have any good effect on the viewers.I am shocked after watching this movie how Ramu can bet for watching his latest scary flick alone in the theater for Rs 5 Lacs as prize.that was just a publicity stunt and now the real reviews on the movie coming out through different ways.

I am a die hard horror movie buff, I like to watch scary movies alone and if got a company then its fine always. In our friends group, we have enjoyed many English horror movies and some good bollywood horror movies in theaters as well as in our PCs.but after I got marry a year and half back I have no option to watch horror movies in theater, so I watch my favorite movies on TV or PC.

Last year I got a chance to watch a somewhat scary movie by Priyadarshan - Bhool Bhulaiya, with my wife, which was overall a good movie.and my wife who can't watch horror movies and she was really scared after watching the movie and I got a good chance to tease her sometimes on the name of Manjulika.but Ramu has take this chance from me with his movie Phoonk.my right arm and shoulder got a real pain after the movie Bhool Bhulaiya because my wife repeatedly holding my arm during the movie and keep on pinching and pushing in any scary scene.she was so scared that she didn't even watch many good scenes due to fear.

Now I am feeling regret on spoiling my Saturday evening by watching the so called scary movie - Phoonk, and simply wasted 280 bucks on such average movie.I have missed some good flicks like Mumbai Meri Jaan, etc in Adlabs and I have wasted my time in the hall which was hardly filled 10% of its capacity.I am writing on the latest so called scary movie from the RGV camp which is not at all scary in any sense.I can bet if my wife enjoyed the movie without any fear then small or big kids can also watch this movie alone.

RGV ka Nimbu Paani Stall

Movie dekhkar aisa laga jaise RGV ne nimbu paani stall lagaya hai aur uske nimbu ka taste bhi ekdum pheeka hai.

Ramu's Old Horror Movies

I liked most of his old scary creations like Raat(1992), Bhoot(2003), Vastu Shastra(2004) but Phoonk can't be placed even behind them.It is a fact all of his scary movies have one and the same story/plot but other than Phoonk all the movies were liked by most of the viewers.May be the known star cast was one of the reason but those movies were all good.all of them some or more horror scenes that can scare the viewers but Phoonk does not have even a single scene that can scare you in any sense.

Scary Items of Phoonk

The movie has just some repeated shots of decorative items like cordless holder in a Monkey statue, Girraffe statue or other small and big pictures in the home to scare the viewers.the sound effect in the movie is not so catchy, noise of grrrrrr, grrrrr, or crow's noise can't scare viewers.use of crow in many scenes was an worthless attempt.use of dreaming something bad and many stupid scenes(spl increasing hands of granny, turning of calender in the kitchen) were quite boring.you will not find scary faces in the movie but the change in the personality of the small girl was used to scare the viewers.

Base of the movie

The story of the movie based on the black magic done by the X-business partners to the small daughter of the builder to horrify the family and to take revenge from the builder for their insult.Ramu has not even hide the main culprits, viewer can easily imagine that this all bad is done by the revengeful couple.the character of Madhu was highly suspectful from her very first appearance.

It is mainly a story of a small family with a atheist father whose belief systems are shaken up when he and his family members face some unexplainable horrors by forces whose very existence his rational mind refuses to accept.and his fanatical devotee wife who was forced to turn her back on God in the face of traumatic experiences.small lovely kids, another devotee in the family as granny and one honest dometic help.

Attractions of the movie

The only attraction of the movie is the acting of small girl, Ahsaas Channa, who played the role of daughter of an atheist father Sudeep and highly devotee mother Amruta Khanvilkar.the role of bad couple played by Kenny Desai & Ashwini Kalsekar was also attractive but only because of the acting skills of Ashwini Kalsekar as physhy woman.Another highlight of the movie was the very different acting done by Zakir Hussain as a man with some super natural power who helped the small kid and family to escape from the conspiracy against them.the acting of atheist builder and devotee house wife were OK.

The characters of psychiatrist/doctor played by K K Raina & Lillete Dubey were just fine.Other characters of the movie were Ganesh Yadav as Sudeep's lawyer cum friend, Anu Ansari as domestic help, Shankar Sachdev as Sudeep's employee and Jyothi Subhash Dadi Amma of the kids.

Ramu's typical direction was not seen in the movie.Cinematography by Savita Singh is just average, Sound effects by Kunal Mehta & Parikshit Lalwani were not up to the mark.

From the very beginning and before the climax the movie mixes up the mind of the viewers with the belief that there is a rational and scientific explanation to each and every one of the occurrences. But in the end viewers came to know that there are supernatural happenings and that can be handled with the some super natural power.

Happy Ending

Another small but good thing of the movie was everybody was happy, an atheist understood the power of black magic and its remedy, mother was happy to see her daughter fine, and doctors were happy with their own belief of science and medical knowledge.

After posting this review I can only suggest you to watch this movie in your home only if you wish to watch RGV's latest scary movie.don't waste your hard earned money for this movie in theatre.

Thanks for reading this review.

Regards,

Akash

Annoying at times but it's not that bad
Aug 27, 2008 10:07 AM 4109 Views

Rainy day in Bangalore and a good horror movie to watch, Anyways that was the plot. But sadly I wasn't that scary. Ram Gopal Verma is brilliant at times and he could be on the other end of the stick too(remember "AAAG") But this movie falls in between.

It was annoying most of the time in the first half, Tht witch of this movie has got a annoying laugh which definetly gives you a headache and every shot has a close up of some animal toy which is much more annoying.

The movie does scare you at times but you can anticipate when something is going to happen but times your anticipation doesn't wrk out.

the cast has performed really well esoecially the little girl and her father. There are plenty of loopholes in the movie. Try and see how many you can figure out.

Overall this movie is a good timepass. Whe you go see this movie do make sure you take along few girls it is fun to watcht hem get scared.

Crocin ki goli pe bharosa karna aur bhagwaan mein vishwaas karne mein kya antar hai?.!

Can you answer that? Well if the above line makes you say interesting analogy then please go ahead and watch Phoonk from RGV camp. Don’t go by the stupid reviews.

The director has made an attempt to showcase two things in this movie:

1st is obviously the attempt to scare the hell out of you. But honestly speaking it does not succeed in it.(at least to me it wasn’t, because for me benchmark from RGV’s horror collection is the movie called RAAT…. any day the most scary movie by him)

It’s a good one time see. Apart from the performances of the famous theatre artists in the movie the rest of the performances are weak and could have been much much better.

So all in all watch the movie once…and I am sure it will make you think wetherBlack Magic exists or not….?

Phoonk -The Name does not at all draw same line as the story which has been potrayed .The movie is very old fashioned with Ram Gopal Varma showing animal pieces in each and every scenes.Everytime it seems something unexpected is going to happen but the audiences are left dissappointed and left laughing at certain scenes .As per my experience go by I liked only one scene along the entire movie that is when rakshas father sees himself in the mirror .

Raksha as a child actress is superb and so is the father .The villian also does very well

The doctors and scientific explainations  have been potrayed in a very ordinary manner.

Barring one or two scenes rest of the movie just drags without putting any fear

Black Magic is a untouched topic and Varma has tried to make it snesitive but he does not meet with audience expectations .

Conclusion was were 9 of us who expected a lots but ended up being disappointed

A punctured film!! CHAL PHOONK
Aug 24, 2008 05:16 PM 4294 Views

Saturday evening and old buddies dropped in my office. The underwear pals who know me inside out! Since this was a reunion after long so we planned to extend it as much as possible. And after much quibbling and brain storming, as a toast to all the horrendous moments we have lived together we ultimately settled for watching a horror movie together.

And as the destiny had it, we were finally at one of our laptops looking for a ticket. Now before I proceed further let me remind you of one thing. Do you remember how we use to haggle at college canteen to make each one of us pay for a bloody 3 Rs. Samosa?  Quite shamelessly we use to pounce upon one another with- “I did pay yesterday it’s your turn now!!” “Bullshit sle tu kabhi nahi deta hai aaj tu pay karega!!”Oye mere khaate mein jod le* next time I will pay”. “

Main kahaa se doon mere paas paise hi nahi hai”. And moreover friends when no female company around we men folk certainly stop to behave like gentlemen (which I accept I am not) and behave like rookies, bumchums, cheapsters of first order. But believe me it’s a delight to shamelessly haggle with old pals after so long. We felt like we are in college again and we are reliving the past of who is going to pay this time. After a dozen of abbey tabey sle ktte, it was decided that one of us will be using his credit card and the rest would pay him in cash. Mind-blowing!! We could not stoop any lower than this.

But while all these confusion and dirty(men) talks were going in my office the seats of PVRs, Adlabs and EDMs were getting filled. So our last booking option saw us sitting at Satyam Nehru Place in the front row at 6:30. We visualized us in the first row with head perched high trying hard to see the whole screen turning heads left and then right! Scary!! My office peon came to be of help and we rushed him to book the tickets for next show that was on 11 O’ Clock. And the rest 3-4 ours were spent on booze and remembering all the stupid things which we did in college campus and on our excursion trips. Which now make us laugh on ourselves and leave a smile on our face.

Now about Ramu’s Phoonk!! This is one man who loves living in the past. Recreating, re- structuring, remodeling what we have already lived so far. The edgy first few reels made us remind of RAAT. Remember how anxious we were to tumble upon a living bhoot and all we did find were sounds, sounds and more sounds. Sounds those made you shudder in your red all plush comfy seats and were sometimes irritating. We looked everywhere on the screen to find the living ghost. At the center, at the corners, under the sofa on the screen, behind the pillar, around the car, atop the tree but all we found was a stupid crow and abrupt sounds to make you shudder first than drowse you in sheer frustration of not catching the ghost again.

But this one movie has a crazy angle too!! It very well showcases the cause behind Ramu’s turning into a BINGO Mad Angle director. The screen- was flooded with crazy toys, artifacts playing with which, Ramu has grown up to be Ram Gopal Verma. You must see these to believe. All crazy, stupid and queer ones which you normally don’t find in normal homes! So now we know whom to blame for our only only 10000080 Ramu Paagal Baba. Beware parents if you gift any of those toys to your kids you are making one more Ramu in your Home.

The movie is about a vengeful couple resorting to black magic to find their means. Or vice-versa, it is about a troubled couple whose cute little daughter has been set upon to take revenge.

Could be one time watch if you are hell bent upon living those sounds and shudders, for us it was sheer nostalgic pleasure as we were having all the fun at the cost of audiences seated next to us with our crazy comments like- seeing a close up of a crazy toy one of my friends quipped “dekho ramu baitha hai”, or when we saw three crazy toys together we could not help exclaiming “ramu, ramu ki maa ramu ka puuppaa” or when a song ended up with the words “come on boy” I replied “I am coming”.

My reco- 3 out of 5 for all those restructuring, remodelling and recreating!! Thank you Ramu for making me live RAAT again!!

Phoonk - nothing scary BUT good movie
Aug 23, 2008 06:51 PM 3060 Views

(note - this is not horror and I could not find any other suitable caterogy so put thriller/suspense)

Yes,

for all the people going Phoonk considering that they will get scared, let me clarify this - it is NOT horror movie but it is movie based on BLACK MAGIC. Now if you don't understand the difference between this, you lose your all expectations watching this film

There are no scary faces, no that great sound effects that shek you up. I really wonder on which basis, RGV Company announced 5 lac for who sits alone and watches the movie. Everybody can do that and in that way, he might lose all his money earned out of Satya and Rangeela!

Sudeep who is shown atheist denies all that asks believing in God including the demand of workers at his site to build a temple where they had found a stone resembling Ganapati.

What I liked the most is movie's end wherein Sudeep's wife(ah, she is very beautiful!) says him that thier daughter is saved only by dint of doctor who is child psychiatric! The fun is this is the same lady who believed in God but then says that what God is doing when this all is happening to her daughter! She loses her faith in God a bit and then believes doctor. Oppositely, Sudeep, an atheist is informed that his daughter is caught by Black Magic and there is nothing medical science can do. He goes to a Tantric(Black Magic Master) and sees that he can really do something. He takes him to the culprits where he kills them. He then firmly believs in God then on! With all blood stains, he comes to the hospital to see his daughter where he finds his wife with his daughter all well! His wife says that dialog then that their daughter exists only because of Doctor! This fellow chuckles and says Yes!

I mean I cannot explain this in words, it is to be seen to realize!

So finally,

The movie is NOT scary, all can watch(including children. yes.!) Again, don't waste your money if you think you will see scenes something those were in Exorcist! There is no blood, ghost, devil, evil, horror etc. Go and Watch it by all means.!

Acting is okay by every person. That Tantrik, Young Couple, Amma, that Black Magic Woman, Kids . everything is okay but not noteworthy!

If you watch movie, there is nothing wrong, if you don't watch it. you don't lose anything!

Now I am looking forward for 1920! Let us see what Raaz people can do there!

Went for Phoonk yesterday thinking of getting frightened. I was little scared though while sleeping but not in the movie hall. Thats because you can predict whats going to happen next in the movie. Its typical of horror movies which has been made over years, you can think of Keanu Reeves starrer Constantine & then RGV's very own Revathi starrer Raat which was fantastic.

This movie revolves around a successful builder(Sudeep) who is totally atheist and his daughter who is affected by the black magic. This is done by non other than his ex-parter in business Ashwini Khalsekar and his husband which runs into dispute because of some finance problem, which is not explained properly in the movie. Ashwini Khalsekar has acted superbly as a mad, sarcastically evil women, just looks could kill you and also not to forget little Ahsaas Channa who playes Raksha. This little girl has given a solid performance once again. And then there are usual RGV pyshco characters likes Manja(Zakir Hussain) who helps Raksha get to normal with his Black Magic and the supprting cast.

After seeing this movie you will actually start believing in Black Magic to some extent and will feel that all Science, technology, research is no match for powers of black magic. If you want to get scared go for it, worth watching once.
