Mysore Zoo Reviews

Bangalore India
Best Zoo I have seen in India, worth the visit
Jun 30, 2014 02:23 PM

Mysore Zoo is just awesome, variety of animals, birds... just wow.Best attraction for me was Kangaroo, I would never have  believed that we can find Kangaroos in Indian Zoo but It was a lifetime experience.

There is an Ape and trust me, it looks lot like a human being.Overall wow but make sure to hire battery car/bus if you are with aged people since park is very big so it will be tough for them to walk. I did the same for my parents.

Thanks

Mysore is the best destiny and should be for any northindian tourist because Mysore is such a lovely city, calm, scenic, wide roads, vast gardens, old buildings, peacefull citizens and any point in Mysore is

a tourist attraction.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL IN MYSORE ZOO.

You live right next or front of the zoo if you choose and it is within the city.

WITHIN THE CITY IS IT TRUE.

Yes it is well inside the city unlike in all other places the zoos are so far, one has to make a trip.

NO TRIP NEEDED TO VISIT THIS ZOO.

From most of the city points the auto charge is just minimum and it is hardly one km from palace.

WHICH TO SEE FIRST IN MYSORE.

Once you land in mysore just get into any medium class hotel which are a lot around this zoo and also near to the palace and take refreshment , tiffin and just hop into the autoricks\haw and he takes you for just 20 rupees.

ANY DAY THE QUE IS LONG AND PAY FOR THE ENTRY TICKET.

There are so many hotels to eat if you are hungry, eat anything since south indian tiffins are filled with iteams like Masala dosa, idly, vada and kesari bath and also uppittu.

PACK ENOUGH SO YOU LIKE IT INSIDE THE ZOO.

Once you pack the food, just walk into the zoo, you are stunned.

THIS ZOO IS REALLY VAST MAY BE 100 ACRES OR MORE.

Next to zoo there is a big tank which is also similar in size so environment is pleasant and green.

TREES WELCOME YOU.

Trees gives a feel of well kept inside the forest and the animals feel at home.

ANIMALS FEEL AT HOME IN MYSORE ZOO ONLY.

The staff find it is very easy to work in this zoo, because all of they stay inside the city and their home is very near to zoo, actually it is walkable for the staff.

NO NEED TO NAME THE ANIMALS.

FROM tiger to elephant to lions to birds to monkeys to chimpanzee to snakes to gorrillas and other type of wild animals fill this great zoo.

ROADS ARE SO NICE TO TREAD ONE CAN FEEL A REAL WALK.

Walking and enjoying eating the eatables one feel how come I am at home in this great zoo.

YOU REALLY FEEL AT HOME IN MYSORE ZOO.

The hotel you stay is so near to this zoo, there is no feel of having much away from your stay.

DAY OR EVENING JOYFULL IS MYSORE ZOO.

At least one can spend 3 to 4 hours, eating ice cream, biscuits and just stroll slowly.

WALK SLOWLY OTHERWISE YOU FEEL TIRED.

This zoo is meant for slow munching of time.

INTHOUSANDS VISTIORS, SCHOOL KIDS VISIT BUT

Dont worry your privacy is never disturbed, this is a vast zoo complex.

The only way to enjoy is just observe each animal, bird, wild animal and move in a snail speed.

PEACE AND TRANQUILITY ENTERS IN SIDE YOUR MIND BECAUSE THIS ZOO IS PEOPLE FRIENDLY.

What to see after the zoo.

just take a return to your hotel, take one hour rest and move to Mysore palace.

yur day is well spent once you make even the palace because after the palace one like just to spend time in the hotel with the family.

ENJOY MYSORE CITY AND OUTSIDE BIT BY BIT, BECAUSE EVERYTHING IN MYSORE IS GREEN AND TOURISTS TO FEEL AT HOME AND AT EASE.

If Bangalore is point to reach, to visit be away from Bangalore because it tires you a lot just by traffic and the traffic jam and sound and air polution at Bangalore is too bad, Mysore is oxyzen rich for centuries to come.

May be this review is on zoo, the planned city Mysore is such a cure feel for the mind, one just love to stay in Mysore for health healing power by doing nothing.

From ZOO you really DISCOVER MYSORE IT IS DISCOVERY OF KARNATAKA ALSO.

Mysore Zoo - The Best Maintained Zoo In India.

I went to the Mysore zoo after a very long time with my strong team of five kids, my prince Athar with is four cousins aged around four to six years.( see the pictures in the photo gallery) The weather was warm, breezy and sunny. Luckily the majority of the visitors were young children from different schools, their teachers, and a few families.

Generally I never visit Zoos nor do I recommend my friends or family members to visit zoos. I think that a zoo contains a variety of animals gathered in one place for the education and entertainment of the human visitors. But from the animals point of view, it is a life-sentence in prison.

However there are some zoos in the world which are exceptions, zoo authorities often claim they are modern day arks, saving species from the brink of extinction, educating the world about wildlife and providing vital research into the lives of animals. Further some zoo authorities claim that they inspire people to contribute to their preservation.

With more wild animals making it on to the endangered list, zoos are increasingly playing a critical role in conservation efforts by augmenting depleting numbers of wild species. Last year, the CZA identified 63 critically endangered species for conservation breeding programmes in zoos

One such exception & exemplary zoo is the Shri Chamarajendra Zoological gardens or Mysore Zoo. This Zoo is one of the oldest & most popular zoo in South India. It was established under royal patronage in 1892, making it one of the oldest zoos in the world. The Zoo had been found on just 10 acres, now it is expanded to 250 acres right in the center of Mysore.

After expansion the zoo in 1909 it was renamed Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens after its founder. When the Maharaja traveled abroad he selected rare animals from these countries and brought them back to add to the zoo's collection. The Maharaja also made the Mysore zoo an "orphanage" for raising abandoned animals. The Mysore zoo has an excellent collection of animals, a beautiful outdoor stage and a colorful setting with the Chamundi Hills as its background and a contrived lake on its premises.

The Mysore Zoo has grown over the years. Now it's home to over thousands of animals representing hundreds of different species and include some very interesting species including pandas, Komodo dragon, Elephants, Lions, Tigers, Giraffe, Chimpanzee, Gorilla, Tapir, Emus, White fallow deers, and Water Monitor Lizard. This is the only zoo in India to have a Gorilla.

The best thing about the century old zoo is, the concerned authorities have introduced the in-reach programme (to know about the activities of the zoo & also details of captive animals) for the benefit of students. The programme will be held on Tuesdays, the day when the zoo is closed for the public.

Zoo director said, around fifty students and two teachers can avail themselves of the benefit of the programme by informing the zoo authorities in advance. The programme has become so popular that over 3,000 students had availed themselves of the opportunity last year. This year, the zoo has decided to provide this facility to more than 5,000 students.

Another interesting thing I found in the zoo is Animal Adoption Scheme. A creative step towards conserving the wild. It will not only ensure good fund flow but responsibility of the people.

Recently Karnataka Chief Minister Shri Yeddyurappa & Infosys employes adopted several animals. Kudos to Legendary cricketer Anil Kumble who is also the Vice-Chairman of Karnataka State Wildlife Board, has adopted a newborn baby giraffe from the Mysore Zoo. Kumble named it Laxmi and handed over a sum of Rs 25,000 to the Zoo authorities.

Anil Kumble is trying hard to get an Asiatic Lion from the Gir National Park in Gujarat and Indian Rhino from the Kaziranga National Park, Assam, for the Mysore Zoo.

Everything is interconnected. Our future and that of our children's, grandchildren's, further generations and all wildlife depends on the planet being in ecological balance. Animals, and the habitats they live in, play a vital role in keeping the environment in balance, so their preservation is crucial.

Visit this zoo if you come to Mysore
Aug 16, 2009 07:47 PM

The Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens at Mysore is one of the better maintained zoos in India. Most zoos are small with little space for animals and poor maintenance, making a visit a painful experience. But this zoo is comparatively better for the following reasons:

a) It is spacious (for both animals and visitors)

b) There is variety in the collection of animals and birds

c) Maintenance is pretty good as evidenced by cleanliness, foul odours are less

d) Animals seem to be well fed

e) There is an innovative adopt an animal program

Mysore is a popular tourist spot in Karnataka and along with locations like the palace and the KRS gardens, the zoo is added to the ‘must-see list’ of most visitors. It is easy to reach and there is plenty of parking place available. Ticket rates are also reasonable at Rs.30/- for adults and Rs.15/- for children. Now, the zoo is fairly large and taking a full leisurely walk around the zoo will easily take 2-3 hours. If you are in a hurry or too tired (or lazy) too walk, there is an electric cart which will take you around in an hours time with a guide thrown in. Of course, it is a little expensive at around Rs.75/- per person – but is a good option for those with small children and for elderly persons.

The zoo has a good collection of animals and birds. As you enter the park, you can see the tall giraffes towering above you. These beautiful animals are a joy to watch. The route to walk around is well mapped and you just need to follow the directions so that you don’t miss anything. A variety of birds from toucans to peacocks to cranes, including a walk-through aviary is an attraction at the zoo. And of course, lots of fearsome-looking crocodiles, which won’t bite if you leave them alone!

A lone gorilla is a key attraction in this park; it is believed to be the only gorilla in India. The gorilla is bored being alone and so there are plans to get the gorilla a mate to relive it of its boredom. Variety of monkeys, deer, elephants are all over the park. The tigers are the star attraction of the park, including a white tiger. It is a delight to watch these magnificent animals, with their glowing velvety skins. Lions, tigers, panthers, rhino, zebras are other occupants. There is also a snake park with snakes in spacious glass enclosures.

An interesting and innovative idea by the zoo authorities is to allow the public to adopt animals. Many politicians have done so, the present CM has adopted an elephant and the president of the opposition party a cobra! You can also add a member to your family by adopting an animal or bird. The prices are reasonable and you can get a tax deduction also. When you adopt any animals, you are sponsoring it's expenses for an year and it will remain at the zoo, you can come and visit it anytime. A placard with your name will be placed near the animals to denote that it has been adopted by you. This is a very good idea and fosters love of animals, especially among children. You can visit https://mysorezoo.in (which unfortunately is always down) or contact the Executive Director of the zoo on 0821-2520302.

The only negative part in the zoo is the lack of a proper restaurant. The existing stalls don’t seem very hygienic. And additional electric carts could be added to reduce waiting times.

If you are planning a trip to Mysore, don’t forget to reserve half-a-day’s time to visit this wonderful zoo. It will be a memorable experience for children.
