If you want to be truthful by heart all the time, if you want to make your promises fulfill at the hardest situation please at least once go through this book. The book is divided into five parts having 43 headings. Every part carries some Bapu's experiences that you can easily compare with your daily life. The experience that is described under the heading of "My Father's Death And My Double Shame", leads you to feel what mess your carnal desire can do with you. Vegetarians shall find some way outs how to be themselves(vegetarian) at any situation. What all I can say is that if you want to grow up, read the book.

This is a great book, I liked it very much. The writing was simple yet so powerful that it had a great impact on me. Gandhi's way of expressing is very simple. He represents even the most difficult situation in a very simple and calm way.I found his ideologies and experiences in life greatly motivating.

The book finishes around the year nineteen hundred and twenty, the time he became a famous figure so he does not brag about anything in his book but instead shows his life before the limelight. The book shows how Gandhi ji became Mahatma Gandhi the father of a nation and a sole that can never be forgotten. It is a must read.

A saint !
Jan 14, 2016 06:18 PM

This is a rare autobiography that really moved me. Gandhi ji or Bapu ji was a great practitioner of truth. He shared all his fears and joys related to truth.

Well, it was not easy for him to stick to this great sadhana(spiritual practice) but he stayed put and finally became victorious.

Gandhi ji was highly well read man and a polyglot .Thus, he could easily relate to millions. Any wonder, he was known as a mass communicator by many social commentators. His english language skills were far more superior and he used wit to outwit his opponents.

Gandhi has also written a number of other books but I have not gone through them. But, I have read some of his essays . Without mincing words, he was a householder- saint who can never properly judged by lay human beings like me. Undoubtedly, he always brings tears to my eyes!

Covering his life from early childhood
Jul 02, 2015 10:16 PM

‘The Story of ‘My Experiments with Truth’ is a massive, but attractive volume, written by Mahatma Gandhi only at the insistence of his friends. It has five major parts, and each part with certain chapters chronologically enlightening his life’s experiences.

The first part, with twenty-five small chapters, mainly deals with Gandhi’s birth, parentage, childhood, marriage, schooling, childhood mischiefs and mistakes, his truth consciousness, his studies in England and his suffering there. The book is attractive in look and is reasonably cheap in price. The translator of the book, Mahadev Desai, writes in the preface that first edition of the book was published in 1927 for the first time. As for the title, it is most suitable as the entire book revolves round Gandhi’s encounters with life’s different experiences, both sweet and bitter, and the title itself speaks volumes about the book.

Father of Nation
Apr 30, 2015 01:10 AM

The word "Mahatma" means venerable, or high-soul, in Sanskrit. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is well known as Father of Nation i.e. Rashtra Pita. He dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth. He tried to achieve this by learning from his own mistakes and conducting experiments on himself and which came in his book named'The Story of My Experiment with Truth'.

Gandhi ji told that God is truth and the way to truth lies through ahimsa i.e.non-violence, This is one of Best Spiritual Books of the 20th Century, so every one who support non violence should read this book. This is an very inspiring book, a must read for teenagers. This can show them the diffrence between good and bad.

Visakhapatnam India
An experiment with truth is always worth making it
Jun 19, 2014 05:36 AM

Today it's become a fashion to curse Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation of India. Perhaps a sizable chunk of our generation born in free India, especially after the seventies, considers him only as the root cause of many problems being faced by the nation and also seeks a sadistic pleasure in cursing him, abusing him, calling him names and what not. May be because cursing someone is always easy and we are fond of taking the easier path or may be because he is a soft target in the present scenario now just like many revolutionaries who laid down their lives for India but who unfortunately belonged to the upper caste strata of the Indian society which is the target of scorn in the present socio-political scenario. Well, non-violent Gandhi had to be a soft target only whose name cannot catch votes now. Cynics cannot dare to say anything critical of Ambedkar who is now a tough target but Gandhi! Who really cares for him(in India) now? Even the Gujaratis seem to have discarded him.

I myself have written a play(in Hindi) on Gandhian thoughts by keeping a veteran Gandhian character at the centre of the story and I maintain that Gandhi can be understood properly by that person only who has at least a pinch of Gandhi in his own personality. Gandhiji used to assert -'My message is my life only'. Hence to grasp his message, one has to absorb at least a particle of the sublimity that pervaded his life, his personality and his vision. Else, misunderstanding him will always be very easy as it was and it is.

In his autobiography Gandhiji could cover only those incidents that had taken place in his life upto 1921. Later, he could not continue to write his autobiography further and this incomplete autobiography of his is known as this book which is, as per himself only, mainly an account of his experiments with truth. Truth which was no lesser than God to him. His assumption was - Satya Hi Eeshvar Hai(Truth only is God). In the last chapter of this book, he has affirmed without mincing words -"I have never felt that there's any God different from truth".

This book is a clear testimony of his relentless devotion to truth. He has criticized and condemned himself for his wrongdoings but at the same time his repentance and atonement inspires the reader and set the moral before him that – ‘Consider it dawn when you awake’.

In the preface, Gandhiji asserts - "It is not my purpose to attempt a real autobiography. I simply want to tell the story of my numerous experiments with truth, and as my life consists of nothing but those experiments, it is true that the story will take the shape of an autobiography.". And hence the title of this book is -'My Experiments with Truth'  or'The Story of My Experiments with Truth'.

This book, thus, intermingles the life of that extra-ordinary person with his quest for truth in everything coming his way. He is right in terming his life as nothing but the story of his experiments with truth. He has been candid throughout while penning down his experiences and thus this book also is one of his numerous experiments with truth only. The truthfulness of the facts laid down by him cannot be verified but there is enough evidence to believe that he has been honest right from the word'go' to the ending word of the stuff.

Gandhiji had written this book originally in Gujarati while spending his time in jails as per the sentences awarded. After reading its both Hindi and English versions, I can say only one thing that it helps in understanding that person whom today's generation may curse but cannot dilute his contribution to the nation and even more than that, to the mankind. Starting from his childhood experiences, the book details his variety of personal experiences till his age of 52 years. Though one third of his lifetime(which is perhaps the most significant phase of his life in the political context of India) is left out, nevertheless the reader can have a glimpse into his personality. And let's not forget that a person's personality is nothing but a result of his collective life-experiences only.

This book is studded with the events of his life which are glaring examples as to how he came across the life situations dealing with true and not true things. The way he dealt with those situations and the experiences he got through them have been elaborated in the book. He is nowhere biased and he has given a true account of what he found and what he felt.

Gandhiji has not been judgmental to others while spelling out various facts and his interaction with others. However he has been judgmental to himself at many places. He has condemned himself for many things and expressed his repentance for doing them. However for certain other things, he has left it to the readers to judge them and frame their own opinion which may be quite different from that of himself.

Since the narrative moves in a chronological order, this book is also an account of the British rule as it was during in that period in India as well as South Africa(where Gandhiji spent around two decades). It's superficially informative regarding the happenings outside and it's deeply informative and enlightening regarding the author himself. The things spelled out are peripheral only. The author's objective is to speak out about himself only and let others judge himself and his experiments with truth which was the ultimate for him.

This book is not boring at all even for the reader who picks it up just out of curiosity and without having any regard for the author. The narrative flows very well and it's systematically divided into chapters. Gandhiji's secretary Mahadev Bhai Desaai had translated the original Gujarati work into English and he has kept the soul of the original expression intact.

This book deals with not only Gandhiji's experiments with truth but also with the experiments of truth with him as we move through his experiences. The tests of tough times strengthened the virtues embedded in him and finally, he felt that his belief in truth had stood the test of time.

In my review of Bollywood movie Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, I have asserted that an episode in the movie in which the hero Shah Rukh Khan admits his lie to his father, thus paining him but having the satisfaction of confessing fault before him, reminds an episode from Gandhiji's life. It's his confessing his sin of stealing gold of the house to repay brother's debt to his father who suffered immense pain through this information but ultimately forgave his son. This book contains that episode also.

Most of us make resolutions from time to time(mostly at the time of the advent of the new year or like wise occasion) only to break them after some time. Gandhiji has underscored through his own experience that if you make a resolution, then better stick to it come what may, else you are dishonest to yourself. If you take the literal meaning of your resolution and not the spirit behind the words in order to find ways to escape it or do anything against it, it's nothing but deceiving yourself. He has illustrated it through his resolution of not consuming cow milk or buffalo milk but later on agreeing to consume goat's milk at his doctor's advice. He asserts that he could never forgive himself for that and always repented for not being able to maintain his resolution(termed as Vrata by him).

I am finding myself as incompetent to do justice to this great book through my review. Gandhiji has elucidated truth as he perceived, understood and grasped it through his life-experiences. He was a firm believer in truth, if nothing else. If only he could write and expand this book further covering his experiences of later years! Anyway, it was not destined. While signing off, he has stressed self-purification also and candidly admitted that his own self-purification is incomplete at the time of penning the book. However he has also asserted in this regard - "I am ashamed but not defeated". And that's what I also assert, i.e., on the path of truth, we may find ourselves as losers in the materialistic sense but should not develop the feeling of being defeated. An experiment with truth may or may not yield the desired result in the shorter period but such an experiment is worth making it.

This book is a gem of Indian literature because it is not a fiction, nor is it a collection of sermons by a hermit. It is a true account of a truthful man’s life who was devoted to truth and truth only. Everything, including the freedom of the country, was futile to him in the absence of truth. This book is a must for every Indian and everybody interested in knowing about that time and those ideals relentlessly pursued by the person whose lifespan was an era for India as well as for the mankind.

This book is meant for those who curse and criticize Gandhi and also for those who respect him and seek inspiration from him. Love him or hate him, you will find this book of immense value. It's easy to misunderstand anybody specially Mohandaas Karamchand Gandhi(on the basis of hearsay about him) but very difficult to conceptualize and visualize him as Albert Einstein had rightly asserted for him - "Generations to come, it may well be, will scarce believe that such a man as this one ever in flesh and blood walked upon this Earth".

Give up the pride and truth comes automatically.

Truth means to keep off from I factor and as long one is not truthfull and faith full to oneself there will be no chance to appreciate. Gandhijis biography which is titled as MY EXPERIMENTS WITH TRUTH.

WHAT IS EXACTLY THE MEANING OF TRUTH.

Basically most of us start with telling lies and lies has got half truth, hence lies is considered as chocolate coated truth.

WHAT IS MEANT BY CHOCOLATED COATED TRUTH.

Mutual benefit is the nature of human beings, every contact is mainly meant to exploit and it is never for really social mix.

HOW CAN I BE SO SURE THAT THIS STATEMENT OF MINE IS TRUE.

Yes either me or you is going to get the gain of meet. One sided gain is the main factor for one being not truthfull to any one in this world.

THIS MEANS GANDHI PRACTICED WHAT HE REVERSED.

Reversed means when Gandhi found out the acts of him which were wrong or not good, he decided he must follow Truthfull method to achieve social equality and to become VASUDEVA KUTUMBAM.

HUNDREDS OF EVENTS IN THIS TRUTH BOOK WHICH ONE CAN REMEMBER FOR LIFE.

1 Gandhi treated everyone equally.

2 He felt for Harijans and always thought something must be done for them.

3 He never practiced untouchability.

4 He considered his wife as a friend never as a person to satisfy his needs.

5 He could never feel ill at ease with Britishers and never felt English complex.

6 He had very good command in Gujarati, English and Hindi ofcourse.

7 South Africa became base for him to fight against British establishment.

8 He made his children to clean the toilet with love and affection.

9 He never considered servants to sit away next to him.

10 He found dressing is not good as long as to the last indian woman has enough.

Once Gandhi entered a poor woman whose saree was so dirty and smelling too, he asked her

why she never wash her saree and wet and again dry on the open sun shine.

She answerd with folded hands, sir I have only one saree to wear, this saree she wore had hundreds of holes and still she somehow knottted and made it presentable at least to keep her modesty tolerable to evil eyes.

Instant tears flew in the eyes of Gandhi, then and there Gandhi decided, until entire indian woman has enough to wear till then he will survive with barechested.

Gandhi became Bare chested because it reminded him the poor old woman in his mind.

Gandhi never gave more importance how so ever a person be he an advocate, American or for that matter he looked at their eyes and found answer for what they suited for.

CLEAN THE HUMAN EXCRETA AND CONSIDER THE PLACE OF IT AS FIT TO TAKE MEALS.

Yes Gandhiji always gave total importance to cleanse the human excreta and he found divinity when his hands touched others excreta how so ever it was dirty to eyes and feel of it to make one vomit or faint but Gandhi always took charge of broom, for him the broom that cleaned the toilet of human beings always a weapon to clean once self inside the heart.

THIS ASPECT HAS GIVEN ME THE GREATEST JOY AND HAPPINESS.

Today when ever I see the human beings whose excreta is at places where some may not walk but when ever I happen to walk between the waste placed I never feel bad.

NOW I DO OBSERVE IT KEENLY IT IS REALLY GREAT TO FIND THERE IS LIFE IN IT.

Hard working people who ease have as good as cowdung and many times I get confused is it cowdung.

But those who never work physically hard have very filthy type of human excreta, i wont feel ill at ease by chance if my feet get struck with it, i just cleanse it.

TODAY I CLEAN THE TOILET BY MY OWN HANDS WITHOUT THE HELP OF ANY BROOM.

Everyday I do it, even I do this at public toilet places and touching others which is struck doesnt matter for me.

What I am wriiting is really based on the inspiration by gandhi.

BACK TO GANDHIS TRUTH FACTOR.

From page one to the last page of this book, we find the method adopted by Gandhi is so easy, even after its writing that is nearly 90 years back, it is worth to adopt by well educated.

SOMEDAY I LIKE TO EXPERIMENT CLEANING PUBLIC TOILET ALONE WITHOUT ANY OTHERS HELP.

Yes I still need guts and once I make up my mind it should be possible for me to clean every public toilet as good as mirror to reflect.

HOW MANY I CAN SINGLE HANDEDLY.

WHY NOT TEN.

RESULT

IT WILL CLEAN MY HEART AND GUILT OF ALL THOSE WRONGS IN MY LIFE ERASED.

I recommend all to read the whole book page to end, because there is too much simplicity and there is no way one to become bad in life.

I have read the book both in English and also in kannada.

Once you read this book one can feel how simple was Gandhi.

Experiment is what confirms the hypothesis !
Sep 16, 2009 03:47 PM

The book is a real description of a great man's real experiments with truth. The truth which we all know 'always prevails'. We live in a country which believes in 'Satyamev Jayate'. I think one should read this book, not only as a biography of a great man, but also to look into the 'truths' of life.

I read this book very long back, but the impressions of its words are still fresh on my memories. Lets not look at it with a political or critical point of view. Lets see what it gives us. It tells you that all of us have a Gandhi inside us. We may like or dislike Mahatma Gandhi as a person, but lets see what he has to say. He tells us about his childhood life, like when he had smoked tobacco, then when he tried to commit the suicide in a temple, and many more.

Every time you read an incidence, you find yourself very much at the same place where Gandhi ji stood at that moment. When Gandhi ji says, "..... and after that I never believed if somebody told me that he wants to take his life...", you can really feel that if you were he, you also could have felt lack of courage to consume poison to do suicide. When he tells how he had an urge to go to his wife, leaving his ailing father. And how did he feel guilty when in the mean time his father passes away. Every time you find that one is not born as a great man, rather his self reformation makes him "The Mahatma"

If I sit upon writing a detailed review, this space will be short. So I will confine my review to certain portions. In the later part of the book, when Gandhi ji was in South Africa, and the local politicians once try to Lynch him by carrying out a false campaign and provoke a mob to kill him, he has described how he escaped with the help of local police and his friends. It again depicts the provocation of the politicians against a person who is fighting for the rights of few underprivileged masses. You find it very near to present day situations. Further it describes the anxiety and concern of local authorities, as well as of Mahatma Gandhi, for the situation. If you ask yourself, how you could have felt in such situation, you will find your answer very similar to the description of Mahatma Gandhi's.

A numerous instances are there in the book, where you really feel that Mahatma Gandhi has really experimented and written inferences of his experiments with truth. I recommend this book to every body in the younger generation, if you really want them to know about the "Nature of Truth".

"Its really Inexplicable"
Feb 23, 2008 12:00 AM

Most of us really read a less of biographies and least autobiographies, but if we do read one someday then "My Experiments with Truth" is a must. A review on the work by the "Man of the century" takes a lot of pride for me. Its been too late and his philosophies have been quite out of the current walks of life, but his life is worth a lesson and an inspiration. This autobiography is one of the most simply written one, with easy understanding, thus showing the great communication power that Mahatma has. When I started reading the book, I though that I had already a lot of knowledge about his life and works, but I was very wrong as the narration of his life kept informing about so many things that have been quite personal to him.

Mahatma Gandhi starts the whole life from his birth and its quite outstanding of the experiences that he shares about his childhood and what he felt about his younger days. He doesn't hesitate to tell things which make him embarrassing and at the same time mentions his own failures and how he could come out of them.

There are many instances of a first person narration of the times during the freedom struggle which is again quite interesting. If you really want to know why he is being called "Mahatma" then this book will definitely answer your doubts and I feel that you will be respecting him more than what you used to do before.

The cost of the book is also very less which ensures that it can be available to each and everyone of us. Is it not great to know the freedom struggle from the perspective of the one who lead it. Yes there are certainly a lot to controversies surrounding his decisions, but if you keep them aside and look  at the brighter side  this book will help you to  get inspire and aspire as well at the same time.

Naam hee kaafi hain ;-)
Dec 31, 2006 01:00 AM

Life changes and how! This is what Gandhiji would be thinking this moment of time...till last year, he was a familiar but yet a forgotten identity...but today, thanks to " Lage Raho", he has made a comeback and is back with a bang...!

Anyway, now that Mr Gandhi is basking in the new found glory, time to share some of my experiments with truth...! If you were thinking that I would be talking about the book, you have'nt known me for too long ;-)

Well to initiate some of you on this random selection of book and idea...I have just completed an experiment...an experiment which was planned, well thought about, worked on and even paid for! - A trip all alone to a far away place with known/unknown people and leading the life one always thought about :) Well...the trip was a limited success and it would be dealt in greater detail...laterz~!!

Coming back to what Gandhiji always preached and how I tried working with them or around them! These are my translations...no amount of pressurised thinking would make you think the way I thougth about them...so don't even try!

"See no evil, hear no evil and talk no evil" -I was always from the old school...never did anything evil all my life and this was not difficult. I decided that I would not listen to the saga that "Bangalore is a costly city and should be avoided", "net friends are not worth a visit" and so on...Remembering what Gandhiji would have done, I decided on not hearing the costly remarks, avoided the news items about net friendships and talked about how the trip would change my life...and it worked! The trip was'nt the best I could have but yes it was decidely worthy :)

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated"-This would irk some of the animal chewing habitantsof MS! but for me this works absolutely fine...talking in the larger perspective, Delhi has treated its animals well...we have space for all of them and at all places! but look at Bangalore...no animals found on streets not even the amiable pom's found in even the remote jhuggies of Delhi...the greatness is for all to see ;-) Bangalore...grow up...you need to start treating the animals...well...even if they are IT illiterate!

"It may be long before the law of

love will be recognised in international affairs. The machineries of

government stand between and hide the hearts of one people from those

of another"-This ought to be my favorite one! I have always loved people irrespective of whethere they are from South or North ;-) My aim in this experiment was to bridge the so called distances and I am glad I did :) it was wonderful meeting a delightful mix of friends and the commonaility showed...Gandhiji worked again for me!!!

"Adaptability is not imitation. It means power of resistance and assimilation"-This was difficult...I was always considered adaptable by all means...but adapting to peanut butter sandwiches twice a day, not reachable mobile phones and resisting the offer to go back to the comfort of the home when the going got tough...was difficult...to say the least...Adapting to empty homes, regularly emptying purses and even emptier mind was rather...tough!

"Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love"-Travelling alone is never easy...and when it is long distance, and the situation is rather overbearing....it becomes all the more difficult...This is what happened...when I travelled alone to Hyderabad and back from Bangalore...meeting with strangers can be funny, irritating and relaxing...depending on who he/she is or becomes ;-) I managed to conquer ( in Gandhiji's terms!) atleast one she and one he...throughout and it was never tough ever since!

"The test of friendship is assistance in adversity, and that too,

unconditional assistance. Co-operation which needs consideration is a

commercial contract and not friendship. Conditional co-operation is

like adulterated cement which does not bind"-This one is a age old truth and it even does'nt need an experiment to verify...Friends are always the best relatives you can ever have...and friendship is what sails you through....but then you need to knead your way through and through! This is my way of saying thanks to Saint, and the first family of Bangalore for providing this unconditional assistance...yet again :)

Well that was me and my random thoughts...yet again! It was an eventful year for me and Mr Gandhi too! He taught us some lessons and we learnt some too ;-) Time for the old memories to be cherished and dream of a better, brighter and wealthier(!!) you...! Do pen down your last thoughts on this one...Happy New year!!!

Kal Gandhi Jayanti Hai
Oct 01, 2006 08:17 PM

Kal hai 2 Oct, matlab Gandhi Jayanti. Kal School ki chutti hogi kyoki baapu ka janam din hai, to unke sammaan mein sab kuch band reheta hai, bank , school, sab sarkari kaam band hote hai, aur kahi kahi private office bhi band hote hai.

Gandhi ji ne bharat ko azaadi dilane mein bahut ahem bhomika nibhai thi. Ahinsa ka naara , aur kehate the ki koi ek gaal pe chata maare to doosara bhi aage kar dena. Halaki log unki es baat ka maajak udate hai, par mujhe to vo bahut pasand hai.

Mere pas unki kitaab hai - hindi mein hai ' Satya ke mere prayog' (My experiments with truth), Mujhe gift mili thi mere birthday mein, maine padi to nai hai poori, par thodi se padi hai, to main aapko bata deta hoon.

yeh baapu ki aatmakatha hai matlab autobiography hai. Isme unhone aapne bachpan se le kar saari baatein bahut hi saral bhasha mein aur poori emaandaari ke saath batayi hai. Jaise agar aap socho 'mahatma gandhi' - to aisa lagata hai ki koi bahut bada aadami hai, toap hoga, par aisa nai hai. Vo bhi humare jaise aam aadmi hi the, jo apni soch aur emaandaari ke karan mahapurush bane.

Jaise unhone bataya hai ki bachapan mein vo bahut dubale patale the, to unko aacha nai lagata tha, aur unhone maans (meat) khaya kyoki kisi ne unko bol diya tha ki meat khane se mote tagade ho jaoge.

  • Fir pehale pehale unko logo ke samane kuch bolane mein bahut dar lagata tha, vo kai baar logo ke saamne bolane khade hue, par dar ke maare kuch bol nai paatre the. Fir dheere dheere unhone himmat ki, aur fir to vo lakho logo ke saamne apna bhashan dene lage.

To ab aap kitaab ko padho to lagata hai ki , vo bikul saadharan aadmi jaise he the, par unhone apne ko a-sadharan banaya (extraordinary banaya ordinary se).

Aur fir bahut kuch likha hai kitaab mein, meri samajh mein poora nai aaya, kyoki, aazadi ki aur philosophical baatein likhi hai, jo mujhe pata bhi nai aur samajh mein bhi nai aayi. Par bhasha bahut saral hai.

Mujhe to isliye nai aai samajh mein kyoki bahut technical ho gayi mere liye.

Aap sab log padh lena, aapko to aa jaegee aaram se samjh mein.

Mahatma Vs. Ghandhi
May 19, 2006 03:50 AM

Hey, wat u said , was that ’Mahatma’ ? yeah - right ? k, then here go....

First, pls let me know what is the meaning of word mahatma, is it meant for someone who is born Mahatma - who is born perfect - has not done any such anti-mahatma thing in his life, or is it meant for someone who is born like any one of us, and gained that sainthood through his karma ? Or for someone, who has accepted all his doings, right or wrong, in a very humble , honest way ? Or for someone who has been ‘framed ‘ as ‘Mahaan hai aatma jo’, for various future benefits of Netas and types, and one dare not say anything against him or else he becomes a traitor …?

If it’s the first case, then Ghandi is a misfit, as he was born as a thin , lean man with ordinary looks and he himself accepts in this book that he has hell lot of inferiority complexes. Now , if someone feels that he has overtaken all his complexes through his karma, or, have even accepted all his shortcomings in an honest way , then get ready for the few shocks , something which has not been mentioned in this book – will come to that later.

I will start from beginning. A child is curious by nature, he wants to learn more and more, so he’s always questioning, what’s this what’s that , whys this and why’s that…, so when a Indian child comes across photo of this man Ghandhi, he obviously gona ask , Who is this man. And then he will be told that this is Bapu, the great man, who taught us non violence, who is the father of nation. Now in his life time , if someone hears these kinds of words for anyone for more that a hundred times, then obviously he’s gona believe them. Then someday if he finds a person whose contradicting Ghandi , arguing that he was a fanatic hypocrite than a mahatma, its certainly gona be hard for that person to even analyze this point of view, what to say of its acceptance….

So, first come to the title of the book, Experiments with truth, what a phase ! experimenting with truth - for what, to know their accuracy ?! or to conform if they work and are good enough for life ? k, leave it , I don’t know till date what the hell is this truth and lie thing all about, so better leave it to someone who know it or at least thinks that he knows…

This man , ghandhi, was quite a character, I mean I ve not heard of anyone f his caliber for sure. So, when he says its experiment – he means it. So, one of the experiments he has done is on controlling the ‘jivha dosh’ – to conquer the tongue’s taste completely. He believed that’s, food is for giving energy , and that’s the sole purpose of it, and it should not b looked beyond that. So he use to have ‘Neem ki Chatni’ , sorry don’t know what’s its called in English – in fact I am not sure if someone in the west have ever tried to make such a delicious dish – chatni of neem! ‘ek to karela, upar se neem chara’ as we say…. But ghandhi sincerely believed that if he has this dish everyday with food, he will be able to conquer the tongue thing. And to add cherry to the cake, (or should I say chatni to the meal!), he even forced his family to have that yummy item !

Next, he has accepted that sometimes, he uses to have nightfall even at an age of seventy. Now that nightfall is very human thing, and in fact so general that it doesn’t need a mention either in his book , nor in my revu. But for someone like ghandi, who seems to conquer everything that comes on his way, ‘kama’ (the sex thing) was one major obstacle. And what he has ‘experimented’ to get rid of it has not been written in the book. This man use to make a young women sleep naked with him – and for what – to check if he can control his sexual instinct in night . Now I sincerely feel like saluting this man, I can never ever think of such an experiment; this man was something for sure….

Pls note that this is not a fake allegation, may be a lesser known fact at most. Gandhi , too has not mentioned in his autobiography, may be because he thought it will create unnecessary trouble, or may be, he was just not comfortable with such an extent of honesty.

Why I m saying all this, its not because of anything anti-gandhi, or anti-mahatma, in fact that word ‘mahatma’ sounds so childish to me. At times I wonder , why are we looking for ppl above natural human type, why are we not happy with they just being normal , why the hell is there a need to find out something extraordinary , so much so that we got to find a person, who got to be mr perfect, nothing less can be accepted. Now that’s stupid – to extent f foolish @ finding perfection, u tell me one man, who u think is perfect, and I can let ur hope shatter in minutes. In fact the very concept of perfection is childish, we are all humans and we got to live life in human ways only , so violence is included, so is peace, so is sex and so is innocence , so is good and so is bad, we got to accept it , and these are so natural and normal things, so , that it often surprises me to see someone struggling unnecessary with his natural instinct and for what – for making this lean body muscular, for controlling nightfall, for ensuring that sweet tastes as good as sour one day…. phew…

I just felt like writing this one , so I wrote, I am feeling good now. That’s the maximum effort I think one should make. A cup of tea, some snacks and a company of friends, and a joke or two to share, that’s enough for a good life. No need to do ‘Sheershasana’ so that ur ‘bramacharya’ be affirmed I guess….

Peace.

PS : Most of u might find my revu, absolutely irrelevant – irrelevant to the extent of absurd, but I just don’t feel like writing anything more, at least for now……

Life's most profound equation: Truth = God
Mar 29, 2006 05:12 PM

''My Experiments With Truth'' is a simple-to-understand book written by an extremely simple man, our very own Bapu, on ideals like Truth, honesty, ahimsa. and service to humanity.

The style of writing here is in a total contrast to that of Jawaharlal Nehru in his book ''Discovery of India.'' While ''Experiments...'' is down-to-earth and deals with the practical problems of day-to-day existence, ''Discovery...'' is scholarly in nature and tends to be poetic; this is reflected in phrases like ''waxing and waning of the moon'', e.tc. This is quite in keeping with the contrasting personalities of Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. While both were sincerely dedicated to the cause of India's freedom from British rule, Gandhi was humble and practical while Nehru was a dreamer and often tended to be impulsive.

Though it is difficult to emulate Gandhi in every way, reading Gandhi's ''Experiments.... was an extremely exhilarating experience because it answered a question that had been bothering me for so many years now. I always wondered whether it was possible to manage people in a company without being harsh. My ex-boss considered me too soft on my subordinates and made my life so difficult that I had to ultimately quit. Now when I look back, it gives me great satisfaction to know that I was on the right side of justice.

History always remembers The Arrogant!!!
Jan 16, 2006 09:13 PM

We all know Mr. Gandhi, our father of the nation, as a physically weak, dhoti clad, wise man; the man who drove a large nation to its independence; an ideal disciple of Ahimsa (non-violence), and truth; a firm believer of God. From our history books, to Richard Attenborough's movie 'Gandhi', we all know Gandhiji's story from being humiliated, by an Englishman, at Pretoria's railway station, to the Independence of India, via Satyagraha, Avagya Andolan (non-cooperation movement), Dandi march, Khadi, etc.

But there is a lot more about him, and that's his autobiography all about. I would like to suggest another name for his book (The story of My Experiments with Truth), and that's The Making of Mahatma.

The Autobiography :

In his book, Mr. Gandhi has described his life as a series of experiments, he performed, on truth, non-violence, brahmacharya, dietetics, hydropathy, naturopathy etc.

He completed his law from England, and after that spent most of his life in South Africa. Its there he did lots of experiments with his life. And, these were which made the changes in him. It’s worth studying the adversaries he faced in there, but he never compromised with his ideologies and believes.

I gave such an odd subject to my review, because it was Mahatma Gandhi's ''arrogance'' which influenced me the most. It’s easy to make ideologies and beliefs for one self, but it’s very difficult to follow them to the extreme, and this is what makes difference between a common man and a Legend. As you'll read this book, there'll be several places where your 'common' mind won't agree with his thinking. The difference is that you're susceptible to change your thinking with time, situation, or reasoning. But Mr. Gandhi didn't, this is what made all the difference.

When he believed that non-vegetarian (including milk and its products) is not for humans, then he followed his ideology to his death bed, while all the doctors around him kept on shouting.

I call this arrogance. One may see it as a very haughty attitude, but there's a glimpse of 'positive arrogance' in it. He lived, and subsequently died, believing in his ideologies. Every legend (be it Hitler, Mao Ts Tung, Winston Churchill, Benjamin Franklin etc.) had some arrogance in him/her (whether good or bad, positive or negative), and that's why history (and we) remembers him/her.

I would suggest everyone to read this book, as it’s a live example of how modesty, wisdom, and humiliation adapt themselves in making of a MAHATMA.

GANDHI'S GREATNESS
Oct 21, 2003 09:19 AM

M.K Gandhi's autobiography MY EXPERIMENTS WITH TRUTH is written in Augustan style , all of the incidents narrated being confessional. But all those incidents as the title goes are his experiments with truth. He has given complete picture of his life highlighting all aspects - physical(his experiments with dietics and naturopathy) , intellectual(his meetings with Gokhale and other dignitaries) , moral(his internal conflicts and compromises with Kasturba his wife) and spiritual(hi indomitable faith in god).

Friends let me here concentrate on those events which according to me made him a Mahatma- a title given to him by Rabindranath Tagore. It is none other than the vow of chastity, the satyagraha and his Ahimsa[non violence]. I leave the reader to read these chapters from the book. Further his journeys in third class compartments and his struggles in South Africa went on to make him the peace apostle of the world.

I strongly recommend the readers two books UNTO THIS LAST by JOHN RUSKIN and CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE by HENRY THOREAU - two books which influenced Gandhi for a moral fight against all injustices and falsehood.

I consider this book much more sacred than all other religious books , for there you find only words but here you find those words being implemented.
