Hello.

I am a student and I have used my laptop for 2 years so I will give you the true review.

I have used this laptop for some years now, I will tell you what I see in this laptop. My experience has been very bad in this laptop, so I will tell you all the right reviews in this.

I had 4Gb and 500Gb variants of this laptop and I used to use this laptop a lot.

So if I talk about the speaker, then you will get to see the sound quality here, there is nothing special about the sound quality of this laptop.

If I talk about the display, then you do not get any good feature in the display, the display is quite rubbish, you will not find any good picture quality in this laptop.

And if I talk about the battery of this laptop, then the battery backup is not good at all, you will get to see a lot of rubbish backup in it.

And the processor given is also quite rubbish, you will not be able to run heavy medium software in it. And the problem of plugging in laptop is also very much.

And the look and feel is also quite rubbish and if I talk about service and support then that too is very bad in this laptop.

And the laptop is not user friendly at all and also you are not getting the value for money.

In the end I will say that you can buy any other laptop, do not buy it .

Thank you.

I bought this approx 2 years ago and I am very happy with this, taking in hand this feels like Hard and Heavy But really this is very strong. When we talk about its Working process so this is not much fast but this is like a elephant it can run any file it's doesn't matter how heavy that file was. Batterie life is disappointed but when we see the work and other things then the battery backup issue is ignore able .

The IBM ThinkPad R40 doesn't have the flash and cool design of other consumer notebooks here, nor does it bundle any fun multimedia software, but it does bring to the table impressive value and reliability. If you're looking for the Ferrari of notebooks, the R40 isn't for you. But with its dependability and reasonable price, it will provide longevity and solid computing. The R40 isn't a gaming machine. The R40 isn't a multimedia machine, but it comes with a CD-RW drive.

At last I would like to say that this laptop is only for those who earn less money & are looking forward to buy laptop. But people looking for good laptops .please don't buy this one as this is just a waste for you.

Was Using it from past 2 years but months ago, left it over. Was getting too heated up. IBM is not good for making Thinkpads, I think, Lenovo bests every contender when it comes to making of thinkpads. Also you cannot high performance.

I wouldn't recommand it to anyone for any purpose of use. if you want a tough end laptop, go and stuck with the Lenovo thinkpad series. I have just bough the lenovo thinkpad t450 which is just incredible. You guys can check it out.

Very friendly product.

Some tips for keeping your laptop in good shape
May 29, 2005 05:49 PM 9933 Views

I have been using an IBM ThinkPad R40 for 3 yrs. and till date I have faced very minor problems using it.

Here are some of the Tips for keeping your laptop in top condition:

Keep your laptop clean from inside and outside :

Keeping the laptop clean is one of the primary factors for keeping the laptop in top conditions. Cleaning the laptop regularly reduces a lot of problems.

Cleaning from outside reduces problems such as:

  1. Keyboard Insensitivity: The keyboards in laptops are very sensitive. They need to be cleaned regularly.

  2. Touch pad Insensitivity: The touch pads in laptops should be handled with clean hands. Sedimentation of dust on touch pads can reduce sensitivity of the pointer and can even jam the pad buttons.

  3. Excessive Heating of laptops: Keeping the ventilations given in the laptop clean can up to some extent reduce excessive heating. Excessive heating can cause the hardware to reduce in performance.

Cleaning from inside can reduce problems such as:

  1. Running Out Of Storage Space: Using the disk cleanup to clean the temporary files and old compressed files frees enough space. Disk cleanup should be used once in a month.

  2. Reduced Working Speed: The cause of this problem is mainly dependent on the excessive usage of root drive. Try to keep the root drive free from excessive data stored. Installing non system software such as winamp, winzip etc. somewhere else than root drive can also help. Using Defragmentationfor all the drives present is a very useful treatment.

Remaining Updated: Using updated virus definitions for keeping the laptop virus free is a must. Viruses are the greatest threats for the performance of a computer. For reliability to be maintained cleaning away the viruses from the laptop is having no alternatives. Latest virus definitions contain information for new viruses that are being created everyday. Viruses can even cause hardware problems to C.P.U..

If Using Internet on the laptop:

  1. Security: The network settings for the internet security should be set according to the types of sites mainly surfed. Many sites contain viruses, bugs, and spywares. Such things reduce the laptop's performance.

  2. Spy ware: While surfing the net make sure that effective antispyware software is always protecting your machine from getting infected. Spy wares are patches which can even crash the system totally.

Some general tips:

  1. Always use the laptop keeping it on the lap or on a firm flat base. Otherwise the ventilations present in the bottom get jammed and ventilation is stopped.

  2. Avoid draining the battery totally. This reduces the battery life earlier than expected.

  3. Do not over charge the battery. This reduces Battery life.

  4. For quicker login avoid keeping many icons in the system tray.

  5. Avoid messing with registry files of the windows.

  6. Void playing games in the laptop. This helps in keeping the keyboard and the touch pad in good shape.

  7. Do not move the Laptop while it is ON. This might cause Hard-Disc damage.

  8. Shutdown properly.

These were some of the tips that helped me keep my IBM ThinkPad in top conditions.

Try these out and result will be crystal clear.

Do you get what they say ?

I don't know whether anybody will benefit after reading my review of IBM R40e laptop because now there present offer is R50. But maybe my whole experience with IBM product will help others in deciding over the brand.

First let us congratulate IBM on there very impressive Television add. It really had an impact on me deciding over IBM from many other brands like....compaq, toshiba, millenium etc.,......but.

The trouble was from the very first day with my first Laptop. And I believe practically every body must have faced it if they instantly used internet on it. The Norton antivirus is not upgraded and so is the Windows XP.

So once you install the computer first time and without upgrading the antivirus connects to Internet.....loads of viruses attacks your laptop. If it is your first Laptop than this trauma is almost like a heart attack because the expensive beautiful black wonder machine made your feelings its slave from the moment you pressed the start button.

I panicked and called anybody to everybody I knew who had a Laptop to figure out what has gone wrong with my NEW laptop. The most common reply was ''Did you upgrade your antivirus and windows XP?''.

Now tell me who on the earth will tell the user that this has to be done before we start the internet (The major source of viruses today). They have just loaded an old virus definition of Norton and that also valid for three months. After that you have to pay for up gradation.

After going through all this I focused on getting the window XP upgraded. The safest today is XP service pack 2. Now guess what...if you have broadband connection than this whole excercise of up grading the loaded Windows XP to Service Pack2 takes around 5-6 days. And if you are working through mobile internet than GOD BLESS YOU....guess is all yours.

Also try to guess what could be an extra cost to IBM to inform the customer on their purchase to kindly upgrade these softwares before loading your important Datas. The Laptop today is average around Rs.60,000/-.

The desktop with much powerful features today is around Rs.30,000/-. I just wonder that whether this difference of Rs,30,000/- not enough for IBM to give to the customer the latest version of softwares. This whole excercise of upgrading the software is painful and disgusting.

I bought my Laptop in the month of September'2004. Till today the machine has been crashed more than once and eventually they had to replace the Hard Drive. The Keyboard brazzel mysteriously got cracked and they replace it also. The CD combo drive stopped working and they replaced it also.

Also please note that when I bought the machine it costed me Rs.64,000/-. It sounds O.K that atleast they replaced it. Try to look at it from a different angle. Out of our 8-9 major hardware TWO failed within the first 6 months of running of the machine.

When I showed my fear on whether I can trust by Black beauty they came up with extended warranty offer of Rs.12000/-. Another trap. And mind you, now the same machine is being offered at Rs.55,000/- but the extended warranty price is SAME.

Have you seen their print media add where they show a man carrying water bottle ? That is the true story of IBM product today. If you buy an IBM than you have to Drink lot of water to save yourself from the shocks it gives you in regular intervals.

Here an old proverb really sounds so true:

''Never believe your eyes.....always read between the lines''

In the end I'll say that Black is beautiful but very dangerous.

The IBM snobbery

IBM Thinkpad: Beyond terrible.

Last June, I purchased an IBM laptop, preferring it to a Toshiba machine. And everyday I regret the decision.

IBM was a costlier machine, but I thought that a product from an internationally renowned company was well worth the extra money. It is here that the story begins.

After a month or so after using the IBM laptop, some colleagues discovered that IBM had not delivered what they had contracted to deliver. The laptops were 20 GB vs. the 30 GB they had promised. Also there was no floppy disk drive!! After a few telephone calls, the floppy disk drives arrived. Nothing was done about the storage space though.

All was fine again for sometime. Then slowly the batteries began failing. We sent complaints. Nothing happened as usual. Soon the issue escalated. And then the whole ?within the warranty period? phrase was thrown up. IBM thought it could get out of the issue by saying that the complaints had to be within the 1 year warranty period for the battery replacements. Unfortunately for IBM, a vast majority of the complaints were within the warranty period. They hadn?t expected that.

The latest update I hear is that they have agreed to replace the batteries for which complaints had been registered within the warranty period. Any goodwill that IBM may have won by agreeing to replace the batteries was lost, due to the IBM employees? pathetic attempts to evade responsibility. They had indeed capitulated, but gracelessly and after a lot of bad blood.

I also had problems with my display screen. Another person who had the same problem said his motherboard had been replaced and that they had fixed the problem for him the same day, though he had to wait from 9 am to 6pm. so one day I took leave from office and went to IBM service centre. The staff told me that they would check the laptop and tell me what the problem was in an hour or so. I waited a little more than 2 hours for them to figure out what the problem was. Turns out, the motherboard had to be replaced. I was not surprised. But I was aghast when they told me that they would give the laptop ?tomorrow or maybe day after?!! The motherboard had to be ?shipped from Bangalore?

I work on my laptop and therefore there was no point of me going to office. And I am sure all readers are aware how difficult it is to get leave from office. Besides I didn?t want to take leave. I had a truckload of work. I agree I don?t know much about laptop servicing, but I think that they must hold spare parts in their service centres. And besides considering the number of instances of IBM laptops? motherboards having to replaced, it was amazing that they didn?t have the required parts.

I was requested to wait in a meeting room while I was they diagnosed the problem. So towards the end of those two hours, I walked out of that cramped, little room and stood a couple of feet outside the door. The gentleman who was diagnosing my laptop charged towards me an hour later than he was supposed to inform me what the problem was and told me that if I walked out of the meeting room then they wouldn?t be able to trace me. Excuse me?! But I thought they had taken down my mobile phone number just so that they could contact me. Besides, as far as I am aware, there is no rule that says if you bring your laptop in for servicing you have to stay waiting in the meeting room, neglecting all your other work.

I am a disgruntled IBM customer. And I am unhappy with the IBM attitude. After paying Rs. 85000 for a laptop you expect better service and a more customer friendly approach. My review is under stated, because I don?t want to sound like a hysterical shrew. But believe you me, IBM sucks.

Also, what a customer must note is that, in the course of this year and a half, the Toshiba machines have not had any major problems. I recommend Toshiba laptops to IBM Thinkpad, because they are cheaper and sturdier.

And someday dear IBM, if I reach a position where I can influence purchasing decisions in my organization, I will obstruct every single IBM purchase.

R40 Sucks
Nov 02, 2004 07:32 PM 10240 Views

IBM R40 is one of the worst products which I have used in my life. The laptop sold in India is so bad it is not worth its price tag. A whole bunch of 80 IBM R40 laptops conked of at SP Jain Institute of Management, Mumbai.

The response given by IBM service centre should be embossed in gold and sent to the IBM International headquarters. '' U guys dont know how to use laptops''. An inquiry conducted revealed that similar incidents have occured at many places and IBM had never bothered to respond properly to any customer complaint appropriately.

IBM service centre at Mumbai, Bandra-Kurla complex is a customer's nightmare. All they can do is throw attitude at you and treat you like a piece of shit. My battery conked off within the warranty period and they refused to replace it. My mother board had to be replaced and the returned the laptop to me, without bothering to even clean the keyboard and the screen.

To sum it up IBM R40 SUCKS.... DONT BUY IT...
