Two Genius..
Feb 26, 2004 11:29 AM 7686 Views

Mohd. Rafi and Amit Kumar.

Mohd. Rafi

Honestly, I have no reasoning to my liking. But then when for the first time I started hearing to songs like Janewalloh Zara…( OST: Dosti), Aaj Mausam Bada ( OST: Loafer), Na Ja Kahin Ab Na Ja ( OST: Mere Hamdam Mere Dost), Gulabi Ankhen ( OST: The Train), Mere Dushman tu Mere ( OST: Aye Din Bahar Ke)….and many many others, I instantly liked Rafi.

There are no favorite songs of mine, as such but then I like most of the songs he has sung. I still remember the full-fledged Rafi album that I bought as a school kid was Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon- Ek Musafir Ek Hasseena. And I had instant liking for the songs, Main Pyar Ka Rahi Hoon and Ap Yunhi Agar….and then Aanchal Mein Saja Lena Kaliya………yes the lyric writers have their skills, music directors were great but then, whenever I hear Rafi, I feel, that a sharp knife is going through a soft piece of cheese. I know funny, but that is the softness I find in his voice. The romantic songs he has sung is actually so nice, Palko ki peeche se kya tumne keh dala ( OST: Talash), Abhi Na Jao Chodd Kar ( OST: Hum Dono), Yeh Jo Chilman Hai ( OST: Mehboob ki Mehendi), Maine Poocha Chand se ( OST: Abdullah) and so many more, makes me wonder sometimes how was this person as a husband or a lover.

And then when the romantic numbers dry up, Rafi shouts, Affu Khuda….( OST: Jab Jab Phool Khile) with full gusto. Or say, he goes on singing, Mast Baharon Ka Mein Ashiq ( OST: Farz) and then, the amazing life that his voice spreads when he sings, Oh Hasseena Zulfon Wali…( OST: Teesri Manzil) or Chehra Tera Allah Allah…..( OST: Tum Hasseen Main Jawan)

Rafi was perhaps the best singer Indian music has ever seen when it came to singing sad songs. All his song from Guide specially Din Dhal Jaye is memorable. It really makes you feel for the character that sings that song. Or say, the song I mentioned called Mere Dushman tu…( OST: Aye Din Bahar Ke), believe me ladies, if your lover sings this for you, then you have really hurt her. And then there came Choo Lene Do nazuk Hoton Ko…( OST: Kajal), Kya Hua Tera Vada…and Chand Mera Dil….(OST: Ham Kissi se Kaam nahin)- all these really reflect the pain through the weird world genius’s voice.

Then the qwallies………..

And then the pure classical numbers. True he gave his touch in Baiju Bawra- but my favorite song of Rafi in classical mood is actually pictured on Mehmood, and it is Aaj Huna Aye Balma, Sawan Beeta Jay…( OST: Ziddi), just listen to this song, and imagine it is a comedy affair. Perhaps only Rafi can do this with his flair.

Rafi indeed a weird world genius. And like I said, I can’t list down my favorite songs of Rafi. I infact have all his songs. Yes I do.

I like them all. Yes, I do. That is how I like. Everything, if at all, the person is deserved to be liked.

Amit Kumar

Yes, you may say a wasted talent. But whatever he sung in those few years, that he actually sung still makes me very happy. And that is why I like Amit Kumar. I think he could have been a great singer, who knows perhaps even better than his father.

Bade Acche Lagte hai..( OST: Balika Badhu). Now when I write this song like this, I feel like listening to it. I can listen to this song perhaps the whole night and would never feel bored. And also when I think some one sung this song, in his teen-age with such a heavy voice, I feel all the more amazed. Not only the lyrics, and tune, the caliber of the singer amazes me, the most. Amit Kumar- he is the Man, who sung those amazing lines. And then he sung for all those Kumar Gaurav films- Love Story and Teri Kasam being the best.

Yes, you would all of a sudden remember the hit numbers from these films which were perhaps Yaad Aa Raha Hai ( OST: Love Story) and Yeh Zameen Ga Rahee Hai ( OST: Teri Kasam), but then, I love the two romantic numbers- Dekha Maine Ek din ek sapna…..and then…one of my type kid romantic numbers, Ham Jiss Raste Pe chale, uss raste pe thi Preet Khari….( OST: Teri Kasam)

I seriously think, if you love Indian film music, and you are kid, who laughs, cries complains, loves should buy this album of Teri Kasam, music R. D. Burman.

It is one amazing album, and Amit has given one of his complete album for this film. I would actually love to write song by song about this album.

Kya Hua Ek Baat Par….is actually a sad song. Can be called a song of complaint. It is sentimental, emotional, as if the singer says, Why was I wronged?

Then, Dil Ki baat….is a peppy song, with an inherent message. It is all success, conveyed through this song, but then there is a feeling of being Lonely at the top.

And Geet Vo hai…is perhaps the best and most lovingly penned cynical numbers. It is an amazing song, where anger is conveyed.

Ham Jiss Raste Pe, is lovely, sweet, makes you feel like a kid falling in Love.

And then Meri Geeton Mein, is perhaps, the song, of hope….that come on even I want to be in love and all…

Yeh Zameen……it is one of the very best bachelor hood song….and really nice lyrics…

I think this soundtrack is Amit Kumar’s most complete album. I remember this otherwise bad film but yes, the songs I view in my way. And Amit Kumar conveyed these feelings to me, through these songs.

Amit Kumar did sing some nice numbers. And even to-day when he lends his voice to just two lines as Bole Chudiyaaaan….( remember OST K3G, when Amitabh sings those lines)…….if you listen carefully you would understand, even in this “wasted talent” there is a difference.

That is Amit Kumar- just two words, but then amazing. And so, Dil Ka Yeh Kaam Hai….( OST: Raju Chacha) as well as songs from Jhankar Beats…for the first time I liked a remix….of Hamein Tumse Pyaar kitna….

I can write a lot more on each song that these two people have sung for me, yes perhaps for you too.

Just like listening to them. Then I like Kishore Kumar too, I like……Sonu Nigam also……and then……

Come on…….they are all good….but some identified the genius within……..and only common people do so….

These are the Fireflies, Genius….

Dr. Shafique's Mohd Rafi.
Jun 03, 2003 09:31 PM 6454 Views

I am in complete agreement with Dr. Shafique that Rafi Sahaab was the most versatile singer we ever had. He is incomparable. I adore one of his songs the most, though I am not sure about the film but its probably from 'CHANDAN KA PALNAA', the song is YEHI ARMAAN LE KAR AAJ APNE GHAR SE HAM NIKLE... I think only Rafi Sahaab could sing it the way it should have been. Every song by Rafi Sahaab is great. From Baiju Bawra too all the songs that are sung by Rafi Sahaab are unforgettable. We are lucky that we had such singers whom we still remember and will never forget. They become Legends, they don't die but live in our thoughts, hearts and moreover they live in our Personal Music Library.

Thank you Dr. Shafique for giving us such a nice review about Rafi Sahaab.

''Mohd.Rafi''Greatest singer of all time''
May 17, 2003 11:38 PM 7906 Views

There have been many singers in Hindi fim industries;but for me RAFI has been greatest among all.Not because he dominated Hindi film industries for more than 3 decades;but because he was most versatile in all respects.

He is only one singer in the Hindi film industry who has been imitated the most is Mohammed Rafi. But his caliber was such that none of his imitators could match up to him. His voice was so versatile that it suited any mood ranging from the boisterous to the melancholic.

Rafi was born on December 24, 1924 in a small village near Amritsar and later shifted to Lahore. He was first trained in music by Ghulam Ali Khan and he recorded his first song in 1944 for a Punjabi film Gul Baloch with music director Shyam Sunder. Not many people know that had acted in couple of films, Laila Majnu (1945) and Jugnu (1947). Rafi made his mark with Tera Khilona Toota Balak in Anmol Ghari (1946).

Soon, he was spotted by composer Feroze Nizami who gave Rafi his first major hit Yaha badla wafa ka in the movie Amar Raj. K L Saigal and Pandit Paulsikar had no words for Rafi's praise. When Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, Rafi sang a song Suno suno ae duniya walon, Bapu ki yeh amar kahani written by Rajinder Krishan and music by Hunslal Bhagatram, which touched everyone and was a great hit.

Counting everything what he had for Hindi films,he was never proud.Very soft person,he never showed himself;very humble person. He never boasted himself;althogh he was the only singer of highest quality in 60s!

Not only Naushad even Shanker-Jaikishen;Ravi;Madan-mohan;O.P.Nayyar;S.D.Burman;Salil Choudhary;Kalyanji-anandji were eager to make him sing for their films.Laxmikant-Pyarelal Sharma started their career (in 1965) for asking him to sing all songs of DOSTI!

But unfortunately we lost him early. Some of his songs----

1)Main Zindagi mein hardam rota..(Barsat) 1949.Shanker-Jaikishan.

2)Bhagwan...ai duniyake..(Baju-Bawra)-- 1948.(Naushad)

3)Hum Ishque me barbad---(Ankhen)-------1950.(Madan Mohan)

4)Meri Kahani Bhulnewale--(Deedar)------1951.(Naushad)

5)Mai apne aapse ghabra gaya hoon-(Bindiya)1960.(Iqbal Qureshi)

6)Kahedo koi na kare yahan pyar--(Goon Uthi Shahenayi).1961.(VASANT DESAI)

7)Saathi na koi Manzil----(Bombai ka baboo).1961.(S.D. BURMAN)

8)Chaudhvi Ka Chaand ho. (Chudhvi ka chand).1961.(RAVI)

9)Zingagi aaj mere naam se Sharma rai hai---SO MUCH

SENTIMENTAL___(Son of India). 1963.(Naushad)

10)Fir Woh Bhoolisi Yaad...(Begana)1965.(Sapan Jagmohan)

and many more songs ---Most Sentimental of all times!

I am very greatful to this person; who has entertained me all the time.

We still miss you!

''I am sorry I thought this was a general category.I believe I was supposed to review a specific album.Sorry again.''

Mohammad Rafi ruled the Bollywood music scene from the forties to the early eighties. He died in 1981(Please correct me). This humble singer who was born in what is Pakistan was very versatile. There was no genre of music that he did not attempt. He was good at singing any kind of song though he had trained in classical music for just six months. In the beginning of his career he sang a lot of soft romantic songs.'Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki' comes to mind.As the style of filmmaking changed Rafi moulded himself accordingly. He sang a lot of songs for Dilip Kumar but my favorite is 'Nain Lad Jai He' from Gunga Jamuna. Both Rafi and Dilip Saab showed their unexplored playful side through this very indian sounding song.'O door ke musafir' from Udan Khatola was memorable too as was 'Madhuban Mein Radhika' from Kohinoor.

However Rafi realised his full singing potential while singing for Desi Dandy Shammi Kapoor. The songs Shankar-Jaikishan and OP Nayyar composed for the twosome were unique. They were indian in content and western in feel.Rafi had a great song in Junglee,'Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par' and another in Brahmchari,'Dil Ke Jharoke Mein'.Both songs had the indian melody and the western harmony.Rafi was able to demonstrate that his range as a vocalist was beyond compare.Rafi also had some great fusion songs in RD Burman's Teesri Manzil. He proved that even with totally western orchestration and non-indian percussion beats he was the king.

Rafi sung less in later years but remained active through public performances in shows. He was decorated with the Filmfare trophy many times.Mohammad Rafi remains the greatest exponent of semi-classical and light music india has ever had.

Love at first hearing

A classic tantalizing voice, the voice of the nation, that’s Mohammed Rafi, an extremely talented and versatile singer. A singer who sang immortal classics and left behind for us a fabulous timeless collection of great Hindi songs.

Soul stirring melodies that make you laugh, ones that make u fell the intense pain, ones under the influence of alcohol (despite him being a teetotaler) they are all loved even to this day the same way that they used to be loved 2o years ago. Rafi was born in 1924 in Lahore. He was trained under Ghulam Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul waheed Khan who were both maestros and marked his debut song in the early 1940s in Punjabi. He also made his contribution to Marathi, Sindhi and gugarathi music besides Hindi. He starred in a couple of movies like Leila majnoo, Jugnoo and Anmol as well.

Mohd Rafi has to his credit a wide repertoire of music. His voice, its quality and stance has no peer and has suited almost any genre of music. He conveys all emotions so explicitly in just his voice and has thus evokes a great admiration from today's singers for emoting.Anything from joy, gaiety to melancholy. All arrays of human life be it happiness, joy, romance, dejection or grief he has sung a song for everything. From the boisterous junglee yahoo to patriotic songs like watan par jo fida hoga, romantic melodies like khoya khoya chand to bhajans like man tarpat hari darshan ko, mischivious chadti jawani to the grief stricken na tu zameen ke liye,.He has earned for himself an undeniable, unparalled stamp of greatness. His glory will remain as always undimmed.

Mohd rafi has worked with some of the great music directors like Naushad, O P Nayer, Shankar Jaikishen, Salil Chowdri, Madanmohan, and S D Burman, Roshan and Laxmi Pyare. He has sung for great actors like Sashi Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Dharmendra to name a few.his laurels too are numerous.he has won a number of filmfare awards and many other prestigious awards including a national award for 'kya hua tera vaada'.he passed away on 30july in 1980. Mohd Rafi lives on even today through his music.

My suggestion to all music lovers.whatever mood one is in happiness, malencholy, dejection, desperation, romance, love you will always find Rafi's songs to accompany and sooth you. He has left behind an everlasting treasure that will be cherished by an ocean of fans forever.

This is one thing I can write about non stop as music is my life especially I miss singers like,Rafi saab,Kishore,Mukesh, singers like Rafi saab could make you feel music & even lose yourself in it .

Have you all heard his songs sung for Shammi ji it makes me feel youthful all over again. When I am very depressed he is the singer whose songs I love to hear sitting alone on my music system or my walk-man for hrs.

Especially when I feel very lonely I love to hear his soothing voice which takes me back to my good old days when lyrics meant more then the instruments. Each song of his has a meaning hear the cassette Rafi sings for O.P.Nayyar saab & you will know what I mean especially the number Oh mujhe dekhkaar aap ka muskuranna is a very lovable song, then hear his number's like Yaad na jayeien beethey deeno ki,all numbers from Guide and most of Dev saab's old movies like Kala Bazaar & Hum dono.

I wish he had lived a little longer so we could have got to hear more good songs from this immortal soul to me he is an unforgettable singer as long as I live I can never stop hearing him again & again.

God let his soul rest in peace. I am sure to get a few spelling mistakes as I have tried to write in Hindi. Have you all heard the song Rafi saab has sung for Dev saab in Asli Naqli Koi soney ke dilwala koi chandi ke dilwale if ever you get to hear it just feel and hear him it is marvellous . Then there are numbers he has sung with mischeif with a child from Andaz of Shammi ji Re mama re mama re you want to know the songs you have to be a crazy fan of his like me hear the number from Madhumati Tootey huve khwabon ne humko ye sikaya hai dil ne ,dilne jisey pahya tha aankhon ne gavan yah hai. These songs are immortal people have come who tried to ape him bu Rafi saab is Rafi saab no one can ever replace him now or ever. Hear his songs like Kiya se kiya ho gaaya tere pyaar mein, then Teri galiyon mein na rakhenge kadam aaj ke baad.

The song Dheere dheere chal chand gagan mein with Lata ji is a beautiful romantic duet then his song Patthar ke sanam tuje humne mohabbat ka khuda jaana, like I said earlier I can go on & on about this Legend like people may be surprised to know I prefer Asha ji much more then Lataji has she has the same versatility like Rafi saab had Oh door ke musafir hum ko bhi saath le le hum reh gaaye akele a song from Uran Khatola with this I thank a good friend who advised me to go on writing about this great singer who is no more with us bodily but left behind his voice to hear and feel him. And at the same time he has left a void which no one can fill now or even in time to come. Rafi saab it is your songs which make me live a life to love and understand music with feelings from the heart.

Mohd Rafi..The Legacy Lives On..
Feb 22, 2002 06:08 PM 10544 Views

This versatile singer popularly known as Rafi Saab still lives in the hearts of his fans even after 2 decades of his death .His versatile voice continues to haunt us even today. After all, he's left behind a rich legacy -- of songs sung by him over 40 years. Rafi's voice, ranging from the melancholic to the boisterous, was such that it suited every mood and every occasion in films.

Winner of Padmashri, National Rajat Kamal award, many Filmafare awards and host of other awards, his songs still haunt us. His unmatched melodious voice stirred many souls throughout this world.

The only singer in Bollywood who has been imitated the most is Rafisaab. But his talent and melody was such that none of his so called clones could match up to him and recreate the magic.

During his singing career, Rafi Saab sang a wide variety of songs and versatility has been his forte. He could sing for any mood and for any actor with great ease. His songs ranged from classical numbers(Madhuban mein Radhika nache re) to songs that followed no rules of music(Uffu Khuda Unko hampe pyar aaya), from sad lamentations(Na kissi ke ankh ka noor hu) to highly romantic numbers(Aapke Haseen Rukh pe aaj naya noor hai), from qawallis(Hum Kissise Kum Nahin) to ghazals(Teri ankhon ke siva duniya mein rakha kya hai) and bhajans(Duniya na bhaye mohe ab to bulale), from slow melancholic tunes(Hum Bekhudi mein tumko pukare chale gaye) to fast masti-bhare geet(April Fool banaya). Rafi Sahab's patriotic songs like 'Watan pe jo Fida hoga', 'Kar chale hum fida' 'Jahan dal dal par' and 'Apni Azadi ko hum' are truly soul-stirring. RafiSaab could very beautifully express the hero's love for his 'mehbooba' and the same voice could also curse the 'bewafa lover'. The golden voice of the tragedy heroes, Dilip Kumar and Bharat Bhushan was also the voice of comedian Johny Walker in songs like 'Sar jo tera chakraye' and 'Yeh hai Bombay meri jaan'. Rafi's voice personified the rebellious image of ''Yahoo star'', Shammi Kapoor and also gave expression to smaller and younger heroes like Biswajit and Joy Mukherjee. It was Rafi Sahab's voice that made Rajendra Kumar a 'Jubilee Star' and Jeetendra a 'Jumping Jack'. The kids still love the songs like '' Chakke pe Chakka, from Brahmachari, ''Happy Birthday to You'' from Ek phool do maali, sung for them even today. All those actors he sang for felt a sense of possessiveness for him and acknowledged his contribution to their popularity.

One interesting fact is that Rafi Sahab has also sung for singer-actor Kishore Kumar in a few movies like 'Raagini', 'Baaghi Shehzaada', and 'Shararat'.

Another interesting fact is his song ''Jaan Pehechan Ho'', a song from thriller movie Gumnaam has been included in the recently released hollywood movie ''Ghost World''.

He sang in many different languages like Telugu, Kannada, Bhojpuri,Gujarati, Punjabi, Marathi and many more.He also sang in foreign languages like English,Dutch, Surinam, Persian etc all of which proved super hits, which shows what a versatile singer he was.

A very simple person inspite of being the most famous singers of his time, Rafi saab was very kind and generous, never refusing to sing for newcomers or new music directors. He is still loved by the whole film industry.

I can go on and on .. but words are just not enough to write about this great person with a divine voice... a legend of legends. You have to hear his songs to believe me.Trust me you wont find a better singer :)

Rafi..the immortal voice, unforgettable
Apr 23, 2001 04:29 PM 7907 Views

In a country so diverse and varied as India, Hindi film music has played a very important role. It has been ironically, the glue to bind us together, the only thing of common interest from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. When you think of Hindi film music, you can’t but think of Mohd Rafi. The versatile singer with a golden voice that’s just incomparable. As Naushad rightly remarked “ many singers will come and go, but there can never be a Mohd Rafi again!”. Rafi is an Icon, a symbol of the golden era. His voice embodied the regal bearing of Dilip Kumar, Flamboyance of DevAnand, Masti of Shammi Kapoor, Romanticism of Rajendra Kumar, Mischiefs of Jeetendra….he had different style of singing for each star and his voice suited every actor.

Many songs have been recorded in 2 versions, one by Rafi, other by Lata. Rafi’s version has always been superior. Lata has been fond wanting in upper scale, the taar saptak, whereas Rafi used to glide over all the scales with such an ease and poise. To drive home the point, some examples;

  1. Tum mujhe yoon bhula na paoge

  2. Dil jo na keh saka

  3. Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par

  4. Jab pyar kisi se hota hai; Title song of this old film(62)

Listen to the versions again and draw your own conclusions. Rafi sang classical, ghazals, sad songs, happy songs, naughty and romantic songs, all with equal ease. His songs are immortal and unforgettable. While there have been umpteen number of albums & compilations of Rafi’s hits, this one is the best I have ever come across. For a die hard Rafi fan, I have rarely left any song or album unheard.

The compilation includes;

  1. Main zindagi ka saath; Dev in Hum Dono.

  2. Madhu ban mein raadhika; A classical masterpiece in Darbari kanada composed by Naushad for Kohinoor, still remains the benchmark pre-qualification for any singer in any contest.

  3. Khoya khoya chaand; You can see Dev Anand prancing around!

  4. Chaudhvin ka chand ho: the ultimate romance.

  5. Raat bhar ka hai mehmaan andhera; This OP Nayyar song inspired Shanker Jaikishen to compose “ Dil ek mandir hai” title song though SJ bitterly hated OPN. This beautiful composition with excellent poetry of Sahir ihas been sung so soothingly and soulfully by Rafi, it uplifts the sagging spirits of any depressed person.

  6. Zindgi bhar nahi bhoolegi; An immortal classic of Roshan.

  7. Dekhi jamane ki yaari: The utter desperation, frustration and agony of the betrayed central character of Pyaasa. Rafi has done excellent justice to capture the spirit and letter of Kaifi Azmi’s poetry and is one of the greatest compositions of Burman da.

I will desist from describing rest of the songs. Each and every number is a jewel. Listen to them yourself and find out.

Before I end, there is a small quiz; 1. Do you know that Rafi lent his voice to another famous play back singer Kishore Kumar? Name the film and the song.

  1. Rafi sang one and only song for Raj kapoor, name the song and the film. The first person to answer both the questions correctly, has an open invitation for dinner with me and my family! Wish you all the best.
