Direction was not good

Recently saw this movie. I liked the story. but I felt there is some problem in the direction, they made the movie like a family drama or something like that. a bit of chill and would have made it better.

in whole cinema in just one scene it looks like thriller, the scene where akshay and Ayesha searching the house. I also felt tired watching the same scene again again when it shows akshay going into the pic and his journey to the boat. in the movie they can give some clues about the ending to us, at once the ending feels like the '80's movie. but hats off to the production team to try a new genre

The movie combines mystery, family drama, deception and supernatural powers. It definitely had potential. And given the presence of good actors like Akshay Kumar, Ayesha, Sharmila etc. it could definitely have been a thriller that the director set out to make it to be.

Only, it is too tame. Kukunoor fails to build any kind of excitement around the supernatural powers Jai (Akshay), a Environment guardian in Canada, possesses. And while you are trying to figure out what is it that he is doing, his father dies due to a cardiac arrest and subsequent drowning on a boating trip. They all promptly pay respects and pollute a serene Canadian lake with the ashes.

A former detective, Javed Jaffery, arrives and starts calling it a murder for no reason. No reason, I say, ’cause he failed to convince me why he got suspicious in the first place. Anyway, Akshay sets out to find the truth and keeps suspecting everyone around him. And using his powers, he enters the photograph taken moments before the death to see what went on until the time of the death. That’s his specialty in the film.

I’ll not reveal the plot here of course. The movie goes through the usual course of dead ends and startling (?) discoveries before the mystery is revealed. Kukunoor relies on the cliche to build the thrill. Like a car parked in the shadows moves in after the house is empty, everyone seems to have a secret beyond the obvious etc. I hardly felt any suspense in the air during the first half of the movie. And I failed to understand why a guy would abandon search for the killer just because his girl friend is upset, when he has hard evidence of cars trying to run him over and visual proof (even if only in his mind) of foul play on the boat.

The director clearly fails in one more aspect. In building realistic emotions when needed. To Kukunoor’s fault, he relies a lot on the strength of the word and less on the expression and body language. Sample this. Akshay walks in on his mom(Tagore) hugging his dad’s best friend (Karnad), within days after the dad’s death. Karnad turns around in a split second after the entry and without alarm or anger, says, ’It isn’t what it seems to be!’. Stale! Taken straight from the Clichepedia! You aren’t to be blamed if you expect some fireworks in this scene. On the contrary, the characters proceed to mouth a few lines, as if they’re having a coffee table conversation about a haircut. Totally docile body language, and tones of voice resembling Heads of State exchanging pleasantries.

I was disappointed!

I had heard a lot about this movie even before its release. I myself was excited at the prospect of seeing Nagesh Kukunoor direct a purely commercial film with an A-star actor. I had liked his earlier movies like "Rockford" and "3 Deewarein". My friends were saying to me that the promos of the movie were looking excellent. So I decided to give it a go.I would have watched it anywayz because Akshay was in this movie. I planned to watch it in a nearby multiplex but was not able to go because of some commitments.

The story goes like this: Akshay has a supernatural or paranormal gift of looking into people's past by looking into their photographs and he tries to solve a murder mystery by using this gift.

Now when I watched it I realised that the movie tries to be a thriller and attempts regularly to invoke your interest in the mystery, at the same time tries to confuse you by other cues like Happi with a I(Javed Jaffery) being paranoid and delusional. In the first one hour the movies just goes here and there with no point. Thats where I belive Nagesh Kukunoor lacked. He lacked the grip over the audience which is required in a thriller. He takes the movie at a different level when Akshay tries to solve the mystery by going into "The Tasveer". But all the good work which was done came to nothing as the suspense is unravelled. It seems a bit unrealistic and in the end I hated the moment when "the bad-guy had a good-guy streak". The bad-guy didn't felt anything when he was killing people around and suddenly his conscience comes to the fore when he hears a dialogue or two from the hero. Such plotholes exist in the movie and this leads to this movie's downfall.

But everything is not bad about the movie. I have to appreciate the background music given, it enhanced the impact of some scenes which were not too good. About the performances, Akshay does his bit and the supporting cast like Ayesha Takia, Javed Jaffery, Sharmila Tagore, Benjamin Gilani, Sharmila Tagore etc. also supports the movie adequately. But because of some lulls in the pace of the movie because of "not-so-good" direction it doesn't leaves that big a impact that it could have. Nagesh Kukunoor sometimes rushes through some scenes related to the past as if they are a burden to the story.sometimes explanation of the past events enhance the impact of the story by giving audiences a better know how of the characters and their motives.but the director didn't believed in this.probably the pressure to make a whole movie in 2 hours was the reason for such rushed scenes.

Overall an above-average movie. Do give this movie a try. One time watch for Akshay and some good sequences. But if you compare it with other classic thrillers like "Gupt" and even new thrillers like "13B".it pales in comparison.

Akshay  has made a brilliant effort  but the story could not match his skills.

Though you can definitely watch it for akshay kumar. His acting is flawless.

the best part about the movie is that it is experimental. And it is we prople that are forcing the industry to do the experiments. SO here was their try. They had no intention to make a flop movie.

So lets expect the fact they tried but couldn't succeed.

Ayisha tkaia sucks in the movie. she really dont know acting and still tries to show off.

it isvery delight to watch the superstar paiir up with ayesha. but ayesha could not utilize this opportunity as she should have done. overall again its akshay for which you can go and watch the movie fr Lookin for his more hits in the upcoming films

I watched this movie in theatre and expected alot from it. It was not upto expectation. The plot is good and I havent seen it in any other movie. I found my self interested in to know

the mystery behind hero’s father death. But the climax showed a different result and all of a sudden we come to know that this is a double role which is something very weared. This could have been made more confusing to have someone from the four other guys to be a killer.

Or the hero himself. I would recommed someone to watch this movie at least once for Akshay and Aisha. She acted brilliantly and he acted good too. There is something missing. I think the move is very quite and have light dialogues and we are not used to see such movies as of now.

Kooknoor has tried to make film like Hollywood movie but did not succeed HOWEVER well try to made suspense and thriller movie but only thing is story line was worst while seeing past using Tasveer is a good drama .

While kuknoor has made good movie earlier TEEN DEWARAIN, HAIDRABAD BLOOS ETC.

If you want to encourage kuknoor you can say well try but need improvement especially story line.

If you have nothing to see you can go for it.

story line and direction is worst.

ending of film is worst part of film.

This is a remake of a English film but not justified anyway

only the action done by Akshay in very start of film is good

Film is about two brother(twin) one of them meet accident and according to family member he died but he survived. Later the survived one think his brother has cheated him and he wants to take revenge with family that's it.

I think Akshay was not suitable for this role!

More proper direction was needed.

End should have been some different.

I was expecting a bit from this movie but it let me down.

In the film Jai(Akshay) has a special power which lets him see what happened. Now that's an odd thing, somewhere its "new" but .

A man who can see the past through a 8x10 tasveer and has to find the murderer of his close one without any idea or link besides the photo.

Rajesh had a gud sense of making moviee but this time I was indeed not succeded.

it is an suspence thriller but yet its just 1 time moviee for average people. now a days people expect everything in the moviee n yes who does'nt want his money worth it.

so at last it was a gud try but failed to be successfull.

Rajesh you better stick to your seriousness

8 x 10 Tasveer is different from the kind of films that Akshay has been associated with since two years. This film also serves an important purpose , to make clear that he is a multi talented actor & can get into the skin of any character.

Nagesh Kukunoor takes a giant leap forward with this flick & have succeeded in giving Hollywood look to the film & emerges as top notch technician behind the camera.

Its the story of Jai (Akshay Kumar) who possess supernatural powers with which he has the ability to look at any picture & can actually go right into that moment when the picture was clicked.

But that is not his profession, he does it only to help others, watch when he locates the missing husband of a woman by entering the picture of her husband taken by her.

Every time he does that, he takes 60 seconds to know the truth & then when he returns after 60 seconds, needs medical treatment to get back to normalcy. But there is a catch in it.

His father (Benjamin Gilani) dies of a heart attack after falling from boat in the water. As per the will, all the property goes to the wife (Sharmila Tagore) of the deceased.

Enters Javed Jaffery, a policeman, suspects the death was a murder & not an accident. Jai is informed that his mother refused the post mortem of the body. He uses his supernatural powers on the picture (size 8 x 10), which was clicked on the boat moments before his father fell from the boat.

His first entry into the picture with Ananth Mahadevan assures that his father was killed by Ananth. He enters Ananth's house to find him murdered. So the murderer is someone else. What he doesn't know that he is being watched by someone.

There were four persons in the picture & he now has to enter into everyone to find the truth. In the penultimate reels of the films, he risks his life as he enters the picture of his father & while falling from the boat, sees another person who was present on the boat at that time. The killer. Who was not in the picture.

At the same time while he sees the killer in the boat, the killer enters his house & is in front of him with a gun in his hand.

The identity of killer is a big shock to the viewers. Unpredictable. That is the highlight. But the film gets slow in the last 15 minutes but it still works. Thanks to Akshay.

The film begins well & even though it is slow in narration but the viewer goes along with the flow. Some finely shot sequences keeps the viewer glued to the screen & the premise of the film is mind blowing with its Hollywood kind of treatment.

Back ground music in such films plays very significant role, as it creates an impact to the situations & Salim Sulaiman get full marks for their work.

Nagesh Kukunoor deserves standing ovation for his work. Technically he is flawless. Watch out the scene when Javed Jaffery investigates, in 60 seconds, with quick shots & crisp editing, everything is narrated without a single word being spoken. The scene when Akshay & Aisha Takia were chased by a van, which tried to run over them. Attack on Sharmila & the look on her face. Akshay chasing the killer who manages to escape. There are plenty of such scenes in this two hours film, which makes it a must watch.

Benjamin Gilani, Girish Karnard, Sharmila Tagore, Ananth Mahadevan, Rushad Rana does well in small roles. Javed Jaffery leaves his mark & makes his presence felt. Aisha Takia is good & did justice to her role.

Akshay Kumar is the life of the film. Not a single comic scene, no hard core action just the atmosphere was violent & he does everything convincingly. One word explains his performance OUTSTANDING.

Tasveer is a superb thriller in all aspects. The cinematography, the BG, the locales everything was just so perfect. Tasveer in its own has set new standards of film-making, esp Hollywood style film-making.

Coming to the movie, it is initially slow paced, but is needed to build up the story. As the film progresses, the pace is very well maintained. The BG music was just perfect to set your mood for a thriller. Its a movie shot very stylishly with amazing locales, added with some breathtaking stunts shot excellently.

Nagesh certainly deserves an applause for such high quality direction usually seen in Hollywood movies. Regarding the climax, I didn't feel anything unusual in it. The climax really shock's everyone which is most important in a thriller. The thrill & suspense has been very well maintained till the end, and your curiosity to know the culprit just increases every passing minute.

Coming to the acting part, Akshay Kumar's just amazing for this role. I cannot think of anyone else for this role other than Akshay Kumar. AKshay play's this role with extreme ease & grace and delivers a top-notch performance. Akshay was at his best performing those daredevil stunts, esp. the one where he jumps from the cliff. This film just proves that Akshay can play any role with effortless ease.

Ayesha Takia was fine. Javed Jaafrey as expected was good with his humor. Rest of the cast was up to the mark. Music was excellent, with just 3 songs. BG was just perfect. Direction from Nagesh was just top-notch. Would like to see him making more thrillers. Lastly, Tasveer is a visual treat to your eyes, containing all ingredients of a perfect thriller movie. Highly Recommended

While Kukunoor has always been an impressive director, starting with Hyderabad Blues, it is only after I saw For that I regarded him with something approaching awe. He has an innate talent for narration.

Since all his films are scripted by him, he gives paramount importance to the story itself and not the form of depiction. In fact Dor was the first film which had production values that were superior to the handycam-job that his earlier films appeared to have.

But what really works in a Kukunoor film is the passion he puts into understanding the motivations of his characters. In Iqbal he gave the underdog cricketer a persona that was so endearing, it got the viewer to see him, not as someone to sympathise with but as someone to relate to. In Dor he forges a story of friendship between two women in a way that I have never before seen on screen. That many of his movies have a conscience is true but they are far from preachy. They seem more interested in unveiling reality and finding a positive aspect to life.

Tasveer is a clear departure from anything he has done before - he attempts a suspense thriller here - with a supernatural dimension thrown in for good measure. I can't say the film was a complete disappointment, because the climax somehow salvaged the film. However it certainly has serious flaws that are not to be expected from a director of Kukunoor's capability.

Often when a director focuses on the "look" of a film, the film ends up as a disappointment because of the emotional disconnect which is somehow the side-effect of this attitude. This, I think is the essential problem with Tasveer. In an attempt to capture the mood of suspense and imminent danger, Kukunoor forgets to build a character in Akshay that one would feel for.

He focuses instead on exhibiting Akshay's "powers" - both physical and err.supernatural. With beauteous Alberta in Canada as the background, the cinematography is nevertheless more sterile than gorgeous. The stillness if intentional is not conducive to any mood for suspense either.

So Akshay (as Jay) is this entrepreneur who is into environment protection - no clue how or if they make money or are even supposed to.While his father is a rich oil-baron type, Akshay is not interested in his money which is after all the result of anti-environmental practices. He is therefore, not particularly hurt when on his fathers sudden demise he realises that his father has willed his entire wealth to Jay's mother. However things take a sinister turn when a detective (Jaaved Jaffrey) who had known Jay's father, shows up. He is convinced that Jay's father did not die of a heart attack but in fact was murdered.

Was he really? The suspects are all lined up in a photograph moments before the "accident". And with Jay's ability to get into the minds of the characters in the photograph for the duration of a minute, it is upto him to to solve this case and expose the killer if there is one. Akshay as Jay does a brilliant job - he has improved dramatically as an actor since his salad days and essays any role with the consummate skill of a veteran. As the easy yet disturbed Jay, he is perfect. His physical agility as usual gets ample screen time - which is all to the good really; a good director would capitalize on the strengths of an actor. In fact Kukunoor has a knack for casting and capitalizes on using faces and personalities that would add depth to a screen persona.

However the time devoted to showing the physical prowess of Jay is too much and is ineffective in helping us connect with him. The first half of the film drags - elaborating on scenes that add no value to the storyline. One gets the feeling the director has overestimated the relevance of many a scene and has stretched them to the extent that the impact is completely lost. Instead one is left feeling annoyed.

Today we are used to dramatic special effects and slick editing which is why Kukunoors take seems jaded. And I believe the money spent on special effects and all that jazz makes sense only in an out and out sfx movie. Otherwise the energy spent on these aspects is never at par with the results they are expected to bring. Best to not go there and chew over the amount of money sunk into it and how to maximize the impact therefore.

The climax salvages the film to some extent. The emotional basis for the film becomes apparent at this stage. The film could have been infinitely better had this aspect of the film been given the importance it always deserves. Akshay being a dyed-in-the-wool commercial actor could have easily been far more endearing and interesting. Sharmila Tagore as the mother, Ayesha Takia as the girlfriend and Javed Jaffrey asthe eccentric detective put in self assured performances. Sharmila looks really elegant in trousers and jeans - she should put in an appearance more often on screen. Would I recommend the film? Yes, if youare into watching experimental bollywood or want to see it on DVD.

After reading negative reviews from people I decide not to go watch 8 x 10 in theatre but instead watch it in pirated dvd and I really thankgod for that the movie is really boring nothing was there to offer in the movie nagesh kukunoor is a very talented director but I didnt understand his direction what he was trying to convey if u take an A list actor especially like akshay kumar u should even add three impotant pillars of indian cinema

1) romantic angle: this was completly missing from movie adding one romantic song does'nt make romantic angle better and even song was ok not that good .akshay and ayesha I was wondering what the director thinking before casting them toghter there was nothing no spark in the couple they should nt do anymore movie toghter

2) comedy if u know u r making most boring movie that only taking a star who s known for his comedy gener u should have added some comedy in the movie javed jaffery is good we have seen him doing good comedy in dhamaal director could have atleat focus to give more comedy dialouges to javed jaffery instead of making him talk plainly

3) action good but nothing great as we all know it is'nt difficult for akshay to do action scenes

Coming to plot: jai puri a man has a supernatural ablity to see the past of people by their photographs he always hesitate to use his powers he is just like any other normal person with supernatural powers who loves his family and girlfreind

the plot is pretty good but does good plot make good movie no

plot now depend on direction: nagesh had wrote a very intelligent story his story is quiet natural

but the direction spoils everything nagesh is known for his storyteller but this time nothing had come out from his movie he should have thought before making thriller people will not come to see only thriller but thoughout the whole movie his shots are really nice locations camera angles all are pretty good

PERFORMANCE: Akshay kumar over out only one expression in movie of a psycho man who could see people past nothing great

Ayesha takia pretty ok nothing great she was even missing the glamour qutiont costumes were pretty desent

Sharmilla tagore: ok . others supoorting cast anant mahadeven rushad rana were also ok director didnt take out the best from ayone of them or maybe they were all lackin because the way story was handle.

DIALOUGES: STUPID I dont know who is the dialouge writer but his dialouges are very boring for example yeh kitna crazy sound karta hai and all

screenplay worst

totall rating 2 out of 5 stars

He has the POWER to see the PAST!
Apr 14, 2009 11:15 AM 4516 Views

Suspense thrillers have always been a hot favourite for filmmakers across the world. If executed well, it can work wonders provided it has a nice plot. But if the filmmaker doesn’t succeed in doing justice, the film fails miserably. 8x10 Tasveer falls in between the two-while some of the sequences are interesting, some of the portions towards the end fails to work and in fact, goes above the head!

The story of the movie: Jai Puri (Akshay Kumar) works as a forest ranger in EPS (Environmental Protection Services). He has a supernatural power-he can see the past of a person through his photograph. His father Jatin Puri (Benjamin Gilani) dies in an accident in his private boat. Jai never appreciated his father’s way of running his business and therefore stayed separately with his girlfriend Sheela (Ayesha Takia). Meeting a private detective Habibulla Pasha aka Happi (Javed Jaaferi), Jai realizes that his father’s death was not an accident-it was a planned murder. All those present in the boat during the accident were the suspects which include Jai’s mother Savitri (Sharmila Tagore), Lawyer Anil Sharma (Girish Karnad), Jatin’s brother Sundar (Anant Mahadevan) and Adit (Rushad Rana). Jai then decides to use his supernatural powers to get to the bottom of this incident and comes up with startling facts!

The beginning portions were strictly okay. It is also only after Jaaved Jaaferi’s entry that things turn interesting in the film. The scenes where Jai goes into the photograph and discovers a terrible secret is worth watching. Most importantly, these scenes were technically brilliant. Jai being chased by the murderer was another cool scene of the first half. Nagesh succeeds in keeping the viewer’s engrossed in the 2nd half too.

The disclosure of the identity of the murderer comes as a bolt from the blue. Many are of the view that the motive of the murderer was most illogical. Although it was little stupid, it doesn’t seem indigestible. Also, things take such a turn at this juncture that one doesn’t get the time to think of logic/sense. But what was most foolish was the reason behind the existence of Jai’s supernatural powers! As for the climax, it was little predictable too.

Akshay Kumar comes up with a sincere performance. Many have accused him of playing the same type of roles and I have failed to understand how anyone can say like this. Take a look at his last 6 films (CC2C, Singh Iss Kinng, Tashan, Welcome, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Heyy Babyy) and in each of these films, he came up with good performances and none of the roles were similar to the other. In 8x10 Tasveer, he essays a character which he haven’t played before and does full justice to it. Unfortunately, the film has flopped. Hopefully, his next, Kambakkth Ishq, should be a hit.

Ayesha Takia Azmi as usual looks great and performs perfectly. Jaaved Jaaferi steals the show with his funny act! Let’s hope we get to see him only in comic roles and not in films like Shaurya! Anant Mahadevan was too good. Rushad Rana (who played Gul Panag’s husband in Dor) was excellent. Sharmila Tagore, Girish Karnad and Benjamin Gilani do a good job.

Music was strictly okay. Only the song ‘Nazaara Hai’ is worth listening. However, the background score by Salim-Sulaiman was excellent. Vikas Shivraman’s cinematography was eye-catching!

Nagesh Kukunoor deserves a pat on the back for making films of different genres. Most filmmakers become experts in making particular kind of films and refuse to come out of their ‘comfort zone’. But here’s a man who has the courage and risk-taking ability to do something new and different from his previous films. Coming to 8x10 Tasveer, the beginning portions were little uninteresting and looked unconvincing. As a director and screenwriter, Nagesh tried his best to create tension before the killer is unveiled. However, as a writer, he could have definitely done a much better job, especially while writing Jai’s past. Better luck next time, Mr Kukunoor!

Some of the best scenes of the film:

  1. Jai meeting Happi for the 1st time

  2. Jai trying to find out what happened on the boat through his powers (well-shot scenes!)

  3. Jai chasing Sundar

  4. The killer chasing Jai

  5. Adit confronting Jai

  6. The killer with Savitri (cool scene!)

  7. The killer unveiled

On the whole, 8x10 Tasveer is a one-time watch. The climax may disappoint many but the film may manage to impress many audiences. Since no A-grade Hindi film is gonna release for the next 3-4 weeks, watching this film on a weekend for some timepass will be no harm!

8x10 = boring
Apr 11, 2009 03:20 PM 3112 Views

I was expecting a bit from this movie but it let me down. The cast includes Akshay Kumar, Ayesha, Javed Jaffree and others. In the film Jai(Akshay) has a special power which lets him see what happened in time by looking at a picture/photo. His dad dies by falling into water from a boat and suffering from a heart attack.

Then Javed jafree(happi) tells akshay that he's fathers death was not a accident but was a murder Then he starts searching for the murderer and bla bla the story continues till the end of the film. The suspense I thought was good but the rest of the film is pretty boring to watch. I didn't find any scenes which I would have liked to watch again. Overall the film feels quite boring till the end. Suspense was good but wasn't enough to make this movie good.

If you want to watch it you can but it may feel boring to some people. Thanks! for reading do rate it.

WHO SAYS IT'S BAD?
Apr 07, 2009 12:11 PM 3707 Views

After the film was awfully battered by critics through their discouraging reviews, I resolved to see8x10 tasveeras I was sure it was not as bad as it was being projected to be .I compelled my friend to accompany me to the cinema hall . I was seriously petrified as if the film turned out to be bad I was going to receive all odd remarks from her. And then the film started with an assortment of heroic stunts by the protagonist cop Jai(Akshay Kumar) and the gorgeous cinematography added to the feat. Jai, is the son of a well heeled, affluent Canadian businessman and is born with a supernatural power of visiting the past moments by the means of photographs . He uses this paranormal power to unravel the questions and reveal the realities of various tribulations of people who unhesitatingly approach him for help. However, Jai's *interests are anything but his father's business and thus he establishes his own organisation based on *Environmental protection. *In the meanwhile, Jai comes across a huge mystery and with all determination and endeavour sets out to decipher the truth .Thus begins his journey of thrill, action and suspense. Is he successful or does he fail defectively is a thing to watch for.

The film is well- directed and minor flaws can be effortlessly overlooked. The renowned director Nagesh Kukonoor executed the project well even though the storyline is not his usual forte. The mediocre performances of the cast may disappoint you but if the protagonists are good- looking acting - skills can be easily neglected, isn't it? The smooth co-ordination between the striking locations and flawless cinematography is breathtaking. The background scores were fairly composed . The climax of the movie was also very positive paradoxical to the much -hyped comments of the media. To conclude with the film was overally good and a smart way to spend two hours of your weekend!

8x10 Tasveer - Review
Apr 07, 2009 10:58 AM 4038 Views

I have always held that Nagesh Kukunoor is an intelligent director and that his best film is Teen Deewarein which very few people have heard of. When I saw the promo of 8X10 Tasveer, I felt that Nagesh was coming up with something as interesting as Teen Deewarein. Unlike Teen Deewarein, this film was backed by big names and that I felt would do wonders. Sadly, with this film, Nagesh who upto now worked on the peripheries of masala cinema to avoid typical Bollywood clichés, makes a full length dive into commercial genre and ends up looking one amongst the many. This film borrows a lot from Abbas Mustan style of film making.

One problem with the film despite being a full blown commercial potboiler is the lack of glamour quotient. If you look in the last decade or so, most of the successful thrillers in Bollywood have had ample dose of glamour. Tasveer has cute looking Ayesha Takia who can hardly be termed a glam doll.

The second problem is the losing grip in the second half. The first half of the film builds up the story and the audience is curious to know who the murder culprit is but Nagesh Kukunoor lets it loose in the second half and after a series of clichés, the curtains are drawn. Nagesh Kukunoor tries to give a logical touch to these clichés but there are a few loose ends that he is not able to fix. The result is a convoluted second half that drags itself to conclusion.

The third problem is of characterization. Most of the characters are not well etched. All of them keep making appearances throughout the film but due to vaguely written characters, hardly create any impact. Akshay Kumar and Jaaved Jaaferi pack a punch with their performances. Jaaved Jaaferi as the Hyderabadi detective is terrific. It was a welcome change to see Akshay Kumar in a non-comic role after a long-long time. It’s sad that this year has not been particularly kind to this new No 1 aspirant in Bollywood. After Chandni Chowk to China, Tasveer is going to be another failed attempt at sealing his position as the top money raker for Bollywood.

I understand that this film is about a super natural power that the protagonist possesses but it takes a while before you digest the fact. The film begins with AK playing a Samaritan and helping others find their lost ones using the power. That made me blurt the – “There you go!” expression that invited the silent wrath of one of the 10 heads in the theatre(including me and the ticket collector with the torch).

The film has good music and background score. The Nazara Hai and the Haafiz Khuda songs are good. I don’t think that the album has been well promoted though. Salim-Sulaiman are fast coming up as a force to reckon with.

Canada looks scenic as always in the film. Nagesh Kukunoor gives the film a Hollywood type look and feel. Nagesh is an engineer by education. Therefore, you see him trying his best to give logical conclusions even to some of the bizarre scenes like the chained Akshay’s underwater struggle to break himself free. I will not go to the extent of labeling Nagesh as a failure in this attempt of his. He could certainly have done a lot better but with 8X10 Tasveer he has tried pedaling through untested water. I will still like to believe that he is better than what the film’s fate at box office will suggest in the days to come.

8X10 Tasveer is disappointing. On Bollywood success scales, I feel it will fall short of making a mark in terms of revenues. Nagesh maybe you should re-release Teen Deewarein. With small films minting money these days, maybe it will set the cash registers ringing. But for 8x10 Tasveer, it’s nothing more than a 2.5 out of 5 rating.

Not up to the mark...

A man who can see the past through a 8x10 tasveer and has to find the murderer of his close one without any idea or link besides the photo... Nagesh Kukunoor had an excellent plot and he succeeds in doing justice to the plot..the sci-fi plot is something new here and the director just uses it beautifully to keep the audience guessing till the suspense is revealed...but somewhere down the line something is missing..the thrill part is there but the movies pace is hampered every now and then...

The special effects are worth mentioning and does add to the interest of the movie... the suspense is excellent but the conclusion of the climax lets us down...the movie is made keeping the multiplex and international audience in mind.. Nagesh must be given due credit for trying something new...Akshay and the overall cast has given an average performance bearing Javed Jaffery who as a Hyderabadi detective excels....

8 X 10 Tasveer - Watch it for Akshay and the climax suspense plot.

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Ayesha Takia, Girish Karnad, Sharmila Tagore, Javed Jafferey, Anant Mahadevan, Benjamin Gilani, Rushad Rana.

Plot: The movie starts just like a BANG!!. A boy looking down at his football with fear-stricken face from top of a mountain, and his parents are running towards him, and then Akshay enters as a forest ranger (he is looking cool in that role) and capture a bear-catcher from his jungle and showing his supernaturall skills. But in actuals, he can just look at a photo and can find the truth by going into the past of the person whom he is looking to. But he's just got 1 minute, or else he can die. Just then, someone kills his father, and he had to find the truth behind his father's death. He just have a picture of 4 business partners. He had to find the truth, and then the journey started. Everybody comes into the scanner, but then suddenly.... (Watch the movie for its ultimate climax)

Pros: 1. Obviously the climax plot is amazing thinking, supported well by the background score.

  1. Akshay Kumar looks cool as a forest ranger and truly he can act in any role.

  2. Just one scene of Ayesha Takia, IT'S TERRIFIC!! (go and watch for yourself)

  3. Javed Jafferey, again showed that he got some serious acting skills, by playing the role of a half-psycho-cum Hyderabadi speech Cop investigating the murder case of Akshay's father.

Cons: 1. Slow pace of the movie, and a boring 1st half.

  1. You feel like there's nothing in the movie and you feel cheated by the renowned director Nagesh Kukonoor (Iqbal,Dor, Bombay to Bangkok fame), until you reached to the end of the movie. But its because the director wants you to feel like that to make the solid effect of the movie (climax) on you.

8 X 10 Tasveer will take you on a new world of imagination. Try it for yourself. Photo imagination.

the movie thrills you all the way.no songs required.ayesha takia does not even have a 5% visibility out of the total run time of the movie.akshay carries 8X10 tasveer.entirely on his shoulders .all the way.

Nagesh Kukunoor should realise after Tasveer that he isn't up to it. He should stick to his forte, which is human drama, mellowing down spectacular scenery to fit his laid-back narrative, faint negativity in everyday characters and the innate good natured humour in all of us. OK, most of us! I mean, I like this guy, Kukunoor. He's talented and he means well.

But he is getting beside himself with these experiments. This is what I wrote about Bombay to Bangkok last year: https://mouthshut.com/review/Bombay_To_Bangkok-138222-1.html

Watching Tasveer, I felt the same kind of exasperation. This isn't professional behaviour!

The movie combines mystery, family drama, deception and supernatural powers. It definitely had potential. And given the presence of good actors like Akshay Kumar, Ayesha, Sharmila etc. it could definitely have been a thriller that the director set out to make it to be.

Only, it is too tame. Kukunoor fails to build any kind of excitement around the supernatural powers Jai(Akshay), a Environment guardian in Canada, possesses. And while you are trying to figure out what is it that he is doing, his father dies dueto a cardiac arrest and subsequent drowning on a boating trip. They all promptly pay respects and pollute a serene Canadian lake with the ashes.

A former detective, Javed Jaffery, arrives and starts calling it a murder for no reason. No reason, I say, 'cause he failed to convince me why he got suspicious in the first place. Anyway, Akshay sets out to find the truth and keeps suspecting everyone around him. And using his powers, he enters the photograph taken moments before the death to see what went on until the time of the death. That's his speciality in the film.

I'll not reveal the plot here ofcourse. The movie goes through the usual course of dead ends and startling(?) discoveries before the mystery is revealed.

Kukunoor relies on the cliche to build the thrill. Like a car parked in the shadows moves in after the house is empty, everyone seems to have a secret beyond the obvious etc. I hardly felt any suspense in the air during the first half of the movie. And I failed to understand why a guy would abandon search for the killer just because his girl friend is upset, when he has hard evidence of cars trying to run him over and visual proof(even if only in his mind) of foul play on the boat.

The director clearly fails in one more aspect. In building realistic emotions when needed. To Kukunoor's fault, he relies a lot on the strength of the word and less on the expression and body language. Sample this. Akshay walks in on his mom(Tagore) hugging his dad's best friend(Karnad), within days after the dad's death. Karnad turns around in a split second after the entry and without alarm or anger, says, 'It isn't what it seems to be!'. Stale! Taken straight from the Clichepedia! You aren't to be blamed if you expect some fireworks in this scene. On the contrary, the characters proceed to mouth a few lines, as if they're having a coffee table conversation about a haircut. Totally docile body language, and tones of voice resembling Heads of State exchanging pleasantries. I was disappointed!

The director needs to understand what he does well and stick to it. Experimenting too much, though good at the beginning, will diminish one's ability to be taken seriously by people around. I mean, we all should know what our limits are. Or life will beat the brown cake out of you until you get back to where you belong!

Not just the director, there are a few other departments that make it to the honours list. Music for one, is unconvincing overall. The camera angles, though brilliant in capturing the splendour of Canadian landscape and Fall colours, are too open and have too much light for a mystery movie. I mean, you'd want some camouflage, some metaphorical shadows, some sudden movements to support the narration. OK, now I'm demanding the cliche itself, after criticising it elsewhere! Even if not the cliche, there's some support for the narration that is totally lacking in the camera department.

The second half though, moves at brisker pace and background score suddenly tunes into the theme of the movie. It proceeds to the end well, until when the mystery is revealed. After which, the movie falls victim to a bit of melodrama. I was also wondering why the murderer had to murder anyone at all to get what he/she was after! All it could have taken was to walk up to the dead guy(before the death, i.e.) and claim it all legally. At which point, you see too many holes in the plot and lose respect for the director's ability to recognise your intelligence(or utter lack of it, considering the price shelled out for the ticket).

That's when you start laughing at what the characters are saying because it does sound funny at times. I couldn't control myself when Akshay's character says'This story doesn't have to end like this!' in the end. Ha ha ha! Insightful! You said it all dude!
