MODI-The charioteer of an expectant India.

May 16th was a historic day in Indian politics, a day where a single man rewrote the records by defying all odds stacked against him. Though he was expected to get good numbers, the sort of thumping majority that he got in the end was expected by very few. Narendra Modi, the face of the BJP in the elections managed to get an overwhelming mandate from the people of India, the largest and most vibrant democracy in the world. Most of the opposition parties dismissed the Modi wave as mere media creation, but the results have made them eat humble pie, for it was not just a wave, but a literal tsunami and none was more affected than the congress party which had to settle for an embarrassing 43 seats, its worst ever poll returns. It was a strategically planned, clinical victory for the BJP and the major credit for it rests on Narendra Modi, who started vigorous campaigning almost 8 months ago itself. He toured the lengths and breadths of the country, provided new hope for the masses, used technology and social media to great effect, made smart moves right through the campaign, proffered loads of positivity and in the end, the verdict from the country was resoundingly clear: "Abki Baar Modi Sarkaar"! More than ever before, there are many expectations from the new government. Here in this article, there is an effort to put forth the direction for the government with philosophical undertones and I provide an analogy which I hope seamlessly gels with the concept. The Bhagavad Gita makes a reference about six troubles(doshas) which visit the human mind. The trained mind is the one which can overcome and resist these blemishes, and the untrained mind is the one which succumbs to them. The mind is like a chariot drawn by many horses, and intellect is the charioteer with the reins. If the charioteer is not capable, the horses pull in different directions and the chariot collapses. In this context, the government is the chariot, the reins represent the mind(administration),the horses represent the fickle forces of the mind, and Modi is the charioteer(intellect)! The government can genuinely succeed on many levels if it can restrain from these six troubles, so articulately elucidated in the Gita. 1.KAMA(LUST) This is often the starting point of all troubles that arise in humanity. Lust, in simple words is intense desire, often for the wrong things. Lust for money, power and position has destroyed so many people from centuries and it holds the same for governments too. Being away from power for so long, many in the BJP would be waiting with bated breath to get ministerial berths, to make quick money, to get plum posts and to acquire big positions. It is here that Narendra Modi should take firm control and ensure that his government or party does not repeat the same mistakes as the previous ones. 2.KRODHA(ANGER) Unfulfilled desires lead to anger, and in this context, the tough hand of Modi will put many within the BJP in a quandary. Unable to get benefits for themselves, frustration might arise which would lead to anger and many a time, this can prove to be detrimental to a political party. Leading India is a tightrope walk and Modi himself will face many challenges and he therefore needs a calm, composed and determined mindset to not budge at the odds he might face. The worst form of anger is anger of the public against the ruling government, as evidenced in this election and he along with his colleagues must ensure that it never gets to this situation. A government should be the one that listens to the people, that understands their problems and provides a balm for their pain. Can Modi provide one? 3.LOBHA(GREED) It is human nature to want more and more. Whether there is any necessity for it or not, the untrained human mind craves for material things. Even after getting something, there will just be a momentary pause in the greediness, after which the mind asks for more or something else. Greed for money is the biggest threat to those in public service as it lays a solid foundation for the monster called CORRUPTION. The new government would do well to remember that this is one area which dealt a severe body blow to the previous UPA government. Scams had become as common as Mahendra Singh Dhoni winning matches in the last over! Thousands of crores of public money was squandered away and therefore, tackling corruption should be very high on Modi's agenda. There is a need to restore confidence in the citizens and the new PM must push for some administrative and judicial reforms to tackle this menace effectively. In one of his campaign speeches, Modi had indicated that he would be the watchman of India. It is highly imperative that he walks the talk and checks the looting of resources and money due to greed! 4.MOHA(DELUSION) A massive victory like this tends to create a sense of euphoria in any party, and though well deserved, if not checked, it can lead to a false sense of security where the distance between the real and unreal widens. The senses are obscured, taking a man to some other imaginary world and the downfall starts right there. It is crucial for Modi to check delusion, both at an individual and government level. Yes, this has been a remarkable victory, but the battle of Kurukshetra is only half won. A lot needs to be done, and since this election was about hope, there are a lot of positive expectations from the people and an opportunity to change the "Is desh ka kuch nahin ho sakta" mindset! The government must connect with the real, burning issues of the people and keep their feet constantly on the accelerator of progress, development and maintenance of law and order. 5.MADA(PRIDE) Attachment to power and position can make many fall prey to a false sense of pride and arrogance. In a way, pride and delusion are inter-related, one causing the other. Arrogance can be a costly quality for a government to have, as exemplified by the previous one which had a whole lot of arrogant and egoistic ministers, who have hit the dust this time, quite rightfully! It is vital for Modi's government to be rooted,to work for the poor, the downtrodden and the highly neglected middle class! Pride, vanity and snobbishness will only work against them. Modi needs to take tough decisions, yet be open to constructive criticism, which is the hallmark of a free and fair democracy. The people empowered the victors trusting them, now it is payback time for the MP's; do the same for your constituencies-empower the people! Modi should exhort this dictum firmly among his colleagues. 6.MAATSARYA(ENVY,JEALOUSY) Narendra Modi is truly in an enviable position; winning a majority on his own, becoming the prime minister, the undisputed leader of his party, the most popular face of the nation. Surely the stuff of dreams! As a result, there is a lot of envy within and outside his party too.India is well known for its crab mentality, where people always try to bring down their own fast progressing countrymen down. It is a given that Modi has a big list of detractors, who would be waiting for an opportunity to attack him.For the past 12 years,he has faced relentless attacks, vilification, crucification and any other man in his place would have crumbled after a while. But, Modi has proved that he is a man with seriously high mental resilience, and he needs to show that a lot more in the coming years in the hot pressure cooker seat of the prime minister. On an administrative level, the nation demands an administration which is free from politics of appeasement, hate, divide and rule, marginalisation et al followed by the previous governments. The mantra, as coined by Modi himself should be"Sabka Saath,Sabka Vikaas" . India has struggled too long with age old politics, now is the time for a new age development and progress politics and Modi is the right man at the helm to oversee this at a crucial time in Indian politics. For that,he needs to provide a fairly "Dosh-mukth Sarkaar"!In a way,if you see the six doshas, you will remember the UPA government as it had all six in abundance! So, can Modi the charioteer deftly handle the reins of the dis-organised horses dragging the chariot vociferously in different directions? Can he bring stability in a chaotic environment? If he does, can he sustain the same momentum for long, for the horses are capricious and can go wayward again very soon. Can he deliver on his promises, and put India on the map of fast growth? The answers to these questions are "Yes,he CAN" for he has done it in Gujarat. But, India is a different ball game with more complex issues, and Modi needs to bring many adjustments in accordance to that. One thing is for sure, he will give his hundred percent and provide strong governance. He has already made the right noises,he only needs to follow the same path. India has trusted him and given him a lofty responsibility and if he succeeds, "Abki Baar Modi Sarkaar" will change to "Baar Baar Modi Sarkaar"! Best wishes to our 15th Prime Minister Narendra Modi! Here is a poem that flowed out thinking about it. The calm, azure waters of the river steadily gaining momentum, reaches the menacing cliff; The glistening sun rays kiss the kinetic waters, the heart skips a beat, while the sustainer of life falls downward in a majestic splash! the hue changes, the rumble changes, the milieu changes; the delusion of mist, the angel white nectar flowing from Almighty's abode, The resplendent glory of it all seems chimerical! SACHIN-The God who swayed millions.

We never want the person to stop and their memories flood our psyche. But, there is nothing permanent in this life and that is the reality. For someone who grew up on Sachin Tendulkar's exploits on the cricket field, it is definitely a hard pill to swallow. In my childhood, I looked at cricket just as a sport where a batsman hits a ball delivered by a bowler and other guys known as fielders chase the ball and throw it back. It was that simple, until one fine day, I watched a little baby faced boy hitting bowlers twice his height to all parts of the ground. It was something remarkable, and my view of cricket started evolving from there. The aggression I saw in his batting, the delightful strokes on display and his demeanour attracted me to the game of cricket and it has grown ever since then. Sachin embodied a new emerging face of India, which was no longer afraid of anyone, which was confident of its own abilities and which was ready to take on the world and prove a point. His is a story of HOPE. He gave hope to millions of Indians, a hope that our country is in safe hands on the cricket field and our super hero would save us from any situation. The nation would rejoice when he would cart a bowler like a McGrath or a Warne to all parts of the ground; it would celebrate his every individual milestone like a century as if it was some personal victory; it would mourn whenever he got out early. Cricket had ceased to be just a sport in India. It had become a religion and Sachin a phenomenon, a Kohinoor diamond, a God! For a nation which was starved of sporting heroes, India had found a saviour. A sportsman who defied all logic and became a deity, adored and loved by millions. He was the nation's pride, someone who Indians could flaunt as their own. His graceful conduct off the field only enhanced his epic popularity. The mid 90's to the early 2000's were when he was at the zenith of his form and our generation is lucky enough to have witnessed some spectacular knocks of this man during this period. The early blitzkrieg, the consolidation in the middle part of the innings, the prayer filled nervous nineties, then the huge celebrations on reaching the century marked by the signature heavenward wave of the bat had all formed a pattern and we expected super human performances from him everytime he set out to bat! Every ball had to be a sixer, every innings a century. It did not matter if India lost the match, but if Sachin had atleast a 50 against his name, the country would be relieved. It's needless to say that a century was as good as an Indian victory! For a long period of time, India was all about Sachin. Get him out and you win. Opposing teams would discuss team strategies only around Tendulkar and how he could carry the burden of a billion for so long is a stuff of legends. Even in his last match, just the fact that he could get a 74 amidst such monumental expectations and stifling pressure from fans, media and spectators tells something about the mindset of this man. A lesser mortal would have been fried in the pressure cooker like situation, but his hallmark has always been soaking in the pressure and carrying many unreasonable expectations with a calm head. Once he wielded the bat, it was almost like a saint would take over his body and he would start batting with an uncluttered mindset which never seemed to have been affected by the heavy burden on his shoulders. This coupled with his humility, poise, equanimity and his colossal achievements gave him a God-like status. It was a pleasure to watch his many illustrious innings live, which would be no lesser than any commercial blockbuster movie with celebrations, nervousness, prayers, joy, sorrow and what not.Sachin was a habit for many cricket followers like me, and cricket without him seems incomplete and just a routine, sans all the jubilation he brought with it. The desert storm innings he played against Australia at Sharjah still lives on vividly in my mind and nothing ever comes remotely close to those once in a lifetime innings. There will be many more terrific performances, many memorable feats which would be achieved on the cricket field, but the impact of those 2 innings will probably remain unparalalled. Sachin enthralled us for over 20 years and it all seems surreal now. Many people and the media were very intent on his retirement from many years, forgetting to enjoy whatever was left of him and to make the most out of it. Great players come and go, but a player like Sachin comes once in a lifetime, and it's important to savour every moment. I hope many would realise it now! A man's life should not be weighed only against statistics, because that gives only half a picture. It is the impact that one leaves which is more important and I can say with conviction that never before have I witnessed such an impact being left on a sport by any other player. He goes way beyond his unreachable statistics and is in a haloed zone of his own. The majestic straight drive, the thumping punch off the backfoot through the covers, the flick off the pads to the legside, the eloquent cover drive, the upper cut, the alluring paddle sweep, the sixes over the spinner's head and numerous other shots have become history, because no one plays it with better finesse and panache than Sachin. They will all remain in his fans' hearts and give solace and delight whenever one feels down.Twenty years down the line, his sonorous batting will be remembered like a Kishore Kumar or Lata Mangeshkar song now-a-days. Thanks for the happiness you gave us, the hope and confidence you instilled, the free supreme entertainment you gave us for 24 years and for every little thing that you have done to make the game so much better and thank you for being the best anti-depressant. It's said “Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting”, but Sachin will always remain etched in our hearts forever. God never retires! A part of my childhood has quietly slipped away with Sachin retiring.I'm sure it is true with many others too. For old time's sake, for one last time “SAACHHHIIIINNNNNN.SAAACHHHHINNNNNNNNNNNNNN”. Rahul Dravid retires-An end of a momentous era!

But the fact of the matter is that one hardly accepts it the way it should be. There is always a feeling that makes it very difficult to accept the reality soon enough. A legend Rahul Dravid recently announced his retirement from all forms of the game of cricket recently and it was a hard pill for many to digest. Though he had retired earlier from international cricket, there was still a glimmer of hope for his fans in the form of the IPL and Champions league. But, since that hope too ended now,it is time to bring out the pens and offer our tributes for this giant of the game. The name Dravid evokes a sense of sheer respect, and it is not just for his remarkable statistics, but also for his demeanour on and off the field. He epitomised hard work, perseverance, sincerity, selflessness, dignity, and a charm which can be associated with very few sportsmen. This man is worth more than mere statistics and offers a lesson for everyone on how to lead a life. His is a story where dedication and hard work triumphed over natural talent. He was not a gifted player like a Tendulkar or a Lara, but built a stupendous career brick by brick through sheer perseverance and optimum use of the talent he had. When he made his debut against England in 1996,not many gave him a chance and wrote him off as a one dimensional player, never suited for the limited overs version of the game and was even dropped from the ODI's. But Dravid was unwilling to accept this and worked diligently on his game and developed into a whole new player who could play as the situation demanded and made a spirited comeback to the ODI team and the fact that he amassed over 10,000 runs in that format, and that too without batting in a fixed position stands testimony to his greatness. As time progressed,Dravid became synonymous as the WALL for his impeccable technique and for being the most difficult batsman to dismiss. After the match fixing saga, Indian cricket had reached its abyss and it was the group of Dravid,Sachin,Ganguly, Laxman and Kumble who lifted the game from the depths and restored a sense of pride for the countrymen. Always dubbed as lambs abroad, the Indian team showed tremendous improvement under the captaincy of Ganguly and the main man responsible for this was Dravid, and his overseas record, which is better than his home record amply suggests this. Dravid was always an affable man who was firmly grounded all through his career and never let success enter his head. If cricket is called a gentleman's game, Dravid was the true gentleman. Never the one to believe in sledging of any kind,he answered every sledge directed at him with his bat and the respect for him grew to such an extent after some years that the opposite teams would hardly venture to even think of sledging when he was batting! Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden had once said "If you want to see aggression on the cricket field, look into Dravid's eyes". Perhaps, nothing more needs to be said other than this. In these days,we see so many cricketers indulge in sledging, abusing and the like in the name of aggression, but aggression should always be in deeds and Rahul is the perfect example for that. If there is one thing that Dravid will always be remembered for,it's his selflessness for the team. He was one player who was always willing to do anything for the team's cause. He donned the gloves to keep wickets in ODI's so that India could have one more batsman, he would open in tests whenever any opener was injured or out of form,he would bat anywhere in the batting order to suit the team. How many such players do we get these days? Once a player establishes himself in the side,He hardly moves out of his comfort zone, and here we had a player who was willing to walk on broken glass if the team asked him to! Truly, he is one player who commands the utmost respect and the spirit with which he played the game was truly commendable. He was always the go-to man of Indian cricket. The problem for Dravid was that he played in the same era as Tendulkar and was almost always overshadowed by his presence. Everytime, he would get dismissed early in tests, he would have to bear the loud commotion form the stands, because in would walk the GOD! Well, how many would have withstood this for long? The weak minded would have been shattered, but not Dravid. He was made of real steel and never once did he try to hog the limelight or feel neglected. He did his job to the best of his abilities, constantly improving himself and was more than happy being overshadowed by other more flamboyant players. Though Sachin is like a God in the cricket circles, the contribution of Dravid to the team is no less than him and though unsung,he will always be a hero. There are a whole lot of things that can be learnt from Dravid, the player and Dravid, the person. He is one of the players who proved that sky is the limit if one works hard. He built a solid reputation by toiling hard, sweating out long hours in the nets and the records speak for themselves. One of the genuinely amiable person on the cricket field, he proved that nice guys dont always finish last! One with a very articulate mind,he was the centre of all praise after his Bradman oration in Australia, where he opened his thoughts on a wide range of issues and he is surely one man who can take Indian cricket to greater heights if he involves himself. Dravid leaves behind a legacy which is very tough to emulate . As pointed out earlier,he is not a player who can be analysed in mere statistics or records. Records and statistics are meant to be broken and overtaken, but it is the impact that a player leaves which can never get upstaged. Dravid was a shining lotus in the murky waters that cricket has become and will remain the perfect role model for people in any profession. Harsha Bhogle recently remarked that he would be happy about his career if people give as much respect when he leaves as they did for Dravid! I'm sure a majority of the people would echo this sentiment. Dravid, the man has left indelible footprints in the sands of time and he left the game better than he found it. Hats off to this genial giant of modern day cricket. The name RAHUL SHARAD DRAVID will remain etched in our hearts forever! The wall has become a monument now. Congrats on a glorious career . Kudos. Life:It's complicated? No,Keep it "Simple, silly"!

Watching the movie 'The Lunchbox', I was drawn into a different world sans all the clutter of modern day technology. The simplicity, the sensitivity and the pure emotions in the simple story of 2 strangers who get close to each other through exchanging of letters over the lunchbox was so delightful. It made me ponder over the complications that man has imposed on himself through his own intelligence. Technology was meant to make things easier for man,but the opposite is happening right now. We are moving into a complicated, insensitive world where people just do not bother about what's happening to others and relationships are getting more and more fragile by the day. There is a line in the movie "Most of the problems are not as bad as they seem"! What a true line this is! We find out ways to complicate every little thing and lose sleep over them. Most of the times, what we perceive as problems are just slight deviations from the routine and it's we who create a mountain out of a mole hill and create a real 'problem'. There is no substitute for simplicity, and nothing can be a problem as long as we simplify things for ourselves. There is a story of a girl who was angry with her mother for getting her tight shoes, until she saw a man with no legs! Everyone has their own set of problems, and there is no need for any of us to get bogged down by them. The real test of character is to take them in the right sense and work for solutions, rather than pondering endlessly over the problem. The advent of mobile phones, emails, social media and the like were supposed to bring people closer. But has that been the case? The answer is a resounding 'NO'. In the past, people used to write heartfelt letters to near and dear ones, which would be preserved for many more years. Now,we have technology which delivers the mails or messages within seconds, but do these mails and messages have the same effect? People use shortened words which have shortened or no feelings, which would probably be deleted any time.In fact,we even tend to forget close ones' birthdays too, only to be reminded in Facebook! The addiction to television, phones, smartphones, internet, computer etc has created such a miserable world that people no longer have time to have a real face to face chat with their own people. The spare time will be spent on these gadgets and the like and we complain later that time runs very fast these days! It's a fact that time and tide waits for nobody and it's also true that 1 day=24 hours thousand years earlier and also thousand years later. But what matters in the end is how we utilise that time for what we intend to do every day. What was supposed to make our lives simpler has actually made it more complicated, devoid of emotions and feelings and has truly made us forget about the simple pleasures of life. We spend so much of money to buy the 'In-things', and follow senseless trends to be recognised as a big shot in life. We tend to think of happiness in terms of material things, but are we indeed happy? Are we able to find any degree of inner peace? We scoff at or ignore the things which can make us happy most easily, but in the end,its those simple pleasures which really give us some degree of peace and contentment. What are those simple pleasures? They vary with each person; for one,it might be watching nature in its resplendent glory, watching sunrise, taking a walk in the beach; for another it might be chatting with close ones, lending a helping hand to those in need. The goal is to find out such free pleasures and indulge in them everyday for some time because happiness, peace and everything is within us. It just needs an uncomplicated mind to 'FIND' them. The movie reinforced the concept of simplicity within me and brought out loads of positivity and brought to the fore many ignored facets of life. As the docomo ad goes, "Keep it simple, silly", that's a profound mantra for today's times. Hope we see a nicer, gentler, kinder and a simpler world to live in and our efforts should be in that direction. Mahatma Gandhi had told "Be the change you want to see in the world". Well, it first starts with every single one of us! Read More

Faridoon Shahryar's "Palkon ko Bhigoyen kaise"-Return of melody!

Indipop music by artists has almost reached its death stage in India and very few dare to come out with an independent album these days. There were a few bright spots in between when Adnan Sami's Tera Chehra and Kabhi to nazar milao,Himesh Reshammiya's Aap kaa Surroor and Kailash Kher's Teri Deewani were hugely popular. But,generally success stories have been very few and far between. In this context, the popular bollywood hungama content head Faridoon Shahryar comes out with his own ambitious ghazal album "Palkon ko Bhigoyen Kaise", which was released a few months ago and has gained a lot of appreciation. Ghazals are a genre which have been out of favour since many years, but there was a time when ghazals of Jagjit Singh,Pankaj Udhas were used in films too.Faridoon attempts to bring back this genre with 8 distinct tracks. The music for all the tracks has been composed by Navneet Kedar and the lyrics are by Prof Shahryar, the great Urdu poet and winner of the prestigious Jnanapeeth award, who also happens to be Faridoon's father.Faridoon handles the mike for all the 8 songs. So,lets check out the album. The first song is the title track "Palkon ko Bhigoyen kaise".The beginning is subtle and takes one to an olden era.Faridoon begins his rendition with a soothing feel and carries the whole song with utmost sincerity. The background is kept very minimal and works in the favour of the song. The soft whoosh effect is very likeable. The song is extremely hummable from the first hearing itself and creates an excellent impression with a haunting feel.Kudos to the singer and the composer for this brilliant track upfront. My Rating:4/5 Next up is "Wo andheri raat ki", which is already in the list of my favorites along with the title track.Faridoon's voice has something very soothing which appeals to the heart and this one is another excellent track with very meaningful lyrics . As with the title track, the minimal instrumentation works for this track too and the melody does all the talking. At 2.37 minutes, this song is very short, but leaves an impact nonetheless. My Rating:4/5 The next song is "Tum mere kitne paas ho" ,a breezy song which is most enjoyable on a long drive on a sultry evening. The singing is soulful as is the music. The song has a very likeable beginning with an instrumental piece which leaves a good impression. Overall, this one maintains the momentum of the album, which is surely treading an upward path. My rating:3.5/5 "Kahin Kuch kam hai" again has a calm beginning and the lyrics are very poignant which touches one's heart.Faridoon does a superb work behind the mike and his singing makes the lyrics to register in one's mind more forcefully. This is a song which can be heard at any time of the day and carries a lot of feel and emotions which really lightens up one's mood.Another winner. My Rating:4/5 Next up is "Naseem-e-soobh ro rahi hai”. This one has a stronger background than the rest of the songs , but one just wishes that the soothing mood of the album was carried forward.Nevertheless,it is quite a good song.Probably the very high standards set by the previous songs pulls down this one a bit,but taken as a standalone song without comparisons, this one works and Faridoon again leaves a good impression and shows one more streak of his singing abilities. My Rating:3/5 “Khwaab se rishta hai hamara” brings the melody back and also puts the graph of the album back on its high pedestal. Special mention must be made of Navneet who creates a laidback background and puts more focus on the singer, which helps the song immensely and leaves a wonderful impact on the listener. The lyrics stand out again and Faridoon is as consistent as always and leaves one craving for more. One more track worthy of repeat hearings and just one word to describe the music, singing and lyrics: EXCELLENT. My Rating:4.5/5 Next up is “Shab-E-Gham kya karein”.This one is really different from all the other songs in the album and is more fast paced and has a soft rock base. Though one prefers to hear more of Faridoon in the lower pitches, this one shows his versatility and does no harm to the quality of the album. Nice song for those who prefer different genres of music in an album. My Rating:3/5 The next song “Maahe Ramzan” is a track which was added recently during Ramzan. This song has a different lyricist Aarefa Faridoon. The song carries a special significance for the occasion for which it has been designed. The musical arrangements impress again and Faridoon returns to his ‘signature’ style, which is very welcome and delivers the song with a lot of passion and soul and the results are there to see. The best line of the song is when he croons “Jazaaye khair maangte hai”,which sounds very catchy.Another very impressive song to bring this serene, soulful album to an end. My Rating:3.5/5 After listening to the whole album, one can only say “Brilliant” to describe it. The songs have a lot of melody, depth and poignant lyrics aided by the extremely capable singing by Faridoon, which takes each song to a different level.Melody has taken a backseat in the songs of recent years and this album is a fine effort to bring back melody which is laudable.More than that, the team of Navneet and Faridoon have really paid a rich tribute to the genre of ghazals and their efforts must get due recognition and support. This album is like an oasis in a desert for those who seek melody. Very highly recommended! Overall rating:4/5 Listen and download the music from Hungama.com or iTunes. Read More

John Keats had written “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”. India is a magnificent country with many places of beauty and one such delectable place nestled in the charming God’s own country Kerala is Munnar, the popular hill station in the imposing western ghats. The drive from Marayoor sandalwood forest reserve, 45 kms away from Munnar is nothing short of splendid with mist covered peaks and greenery all around. The air gets cooler as one drives up the narrow road and the captivating scenery gradually changes to tea plantations, which fills the heart with glee. It is never known when time flies away as the heavenly surroundings enrapture our attention. The salubrious climate of Munnar extends a warm welcome to the tourists and there is no dearth of accommodation as there are so many hotels and resorts dotting the sides of the road. The main intention of the tourists to visit Munnar would be to experience the cool and pleasant weather and of course to see various places of interest. This hill station does not disappoint anyone as it offers a veritable treat of places, which would delight the hearts of one and all. To begin with, there is the Blossom hydel park in the centre of the city. It is a lovely garden with a good view of the hills and tea plantations. It is a nice place to have a brisk stroll in the mornings and evenings. The next place of interest is the Pothamedu view point, which offers a decent view of the hill ranges. The best time to visit this place is during sunset. The crimson red sun setting behind the hillocks is definitely a sight to behold. Taking a slight deviation from the cochin road leads us to the Attukal waterfalls. The road leading to it is very narrow, but there is plenty of greenery around which makes it a good drive. The waterfalls would be in full flow during monsoon and it would be fabulous to just sit nearby with a cup of the aromatic, delicious Munnar tea and gaze at the serene waterfalls and the misty mountains behind it. The famous top station road has most of the tourist attractions and it’s a convenience for the tourists as they can cover so many places in a single stretch. The first tourist spot in this stretch is the floriculture centre, which houses a wide range of flora. Seeing so many plants and colourful flowers amidst that natural setting is delightful. At a short distance from the floriculture centre is the ‘Photo point’, a place for the photo enthusiasts to snap some smart pictures in front of the picturesque tea gardens! A few kilometres from that spot is the idyllic Mattupetty dam, where the Mattupetty river flows along calmly and the hill ranges behind it offer a most wonderful view. At a few metres from the dam is the boating centre, where one can enjoy boating in that glorious environment. There is also the ‘Elephant arrival spot’ nearby, where with some luck , majestic elephants can be seen grazing on the carpet-like meadows. Passing by the Indo-Swiss farm, the next place is the Kundala dam, another place of scenic beauty. But more than the dam, it is the road alongside the lake which is truly mesmerising with huge trees all along and the lake is a picture of solitude. The echo point is the next place on the stretch, and as the name itself suggests, this place echoes the voices when shouted loudly and it’s a good place to have some fun. Women can also have lots of fun here, as there are so many stalls to shop! The next part of the journey is where one can experience the true beauty of Munnar. The drive to top station is a splendid one, offering a panoramic view of the vast expanse of exotic tea plantations and distant breathtaking mountains. The lush green tea gardens, the blue mountains and the tranquil blue sky with pure white clouds complement each other impeccably. The surroundings seem like a green carpet at some places. The wind brings with it the tingling scent of the tea leaves and the calmness around soothes the soul. There are many excellent viewpoints along the way and the final stop is at top station, which is actually a part of Tamil Nadu. This place offers an awe inspiring view of the grandiose western ghats. There is an almost 270 degree view of huge mountains and a short trek leads to the edge of the hill from where the landscape is absolutely enchanting. One particular view which draws attention is of 3 huge hills, which somehow reminds us of the holy trinity of Hindu mythology. It is a wonderful place with ethereal scenic beauty and is sure to satiate the thirst of nature lovers. The long drive back to Munnar, which is 37 kms from that spot is again very blissful and unwinding and which would be cherished for long. Apart from these places, there is the Tata tea museum which displays the tea manufacturing process. There is also the Eravikulam National Park, the home of the endangered species Nilgiri Tahr(wild goats) found exclusively in that place. This usually takes half a day and one can have a good time in the safari amidst the vibrant forest and it’s an enjoyable experience. Another attraction in the national park is the Anaimudi peak, the highest peak of South India, which resembles the head of an elephant. A few kilometres away from the national park is the Lakkom waterfalls, which would be in full force during monsoon. But it is a good place nevertheless with dense jungle around the falls. With all these attractions, Munnar is definitely a tourist’s delight. It is a beautiful place away from the heat, dirt and pollution of many cities and offers a rejuvenating and invigorating experience to the mind which is jaded with the mundane goings on of everyday life.
