This blog is an extract from http://99reallifestories.com. The full story is available there. The Mother and the baby camel were lazing around on a dry summer day. Suddenly the baby camel asked “Mom, can I ask you some questions?” “Oh! Sure baby. Is there something bothering you” asked the mother camel Baby: “I was wondering why do camels have humps?” Mother: “Good question. You see we are desert animals and need these humps to store water. You know that we can survive for long without water” Baby: “Okay Mom. Then why are our legs so long and our feet rounded?” Mother: “You see, these long legs and rounded feet help us to move better in the desert than anyone can do.” Baby: “Ok… But the why do we have long eye lashes too. It sometimes bothers my sight” Mother: “No No. These long and thick eyelashes are the protective cover. They help to protect the eyes from the desert sand & wind”. The Baby camel got to some thinking and finally exclaimed, “I see that now. The hump is to store water when we are in the desert, the legs are for walking through the desert and these eye lashes protect us from the desert sand…….then what in god’s name are we doing here in the Zoo!?”. The baby camel walked away in disappointment. If you have skills and abilities which are not being put to use, you are in the camel club. Those in this club will be very slow in making progress in whatever aspects of their life. Read More

I have this proof of God and everything God does is perfect, no mistakes". One day, they went hunting and a wild animal attacked the king. The servant managed to kill the animal but couldn't prevent the King from losing a finger. The King was furious about losing his finger. In all his frustration he yelled at the servant, "Is this your proof of God? If God was perfect, I would not have been attacked or lost my finger". The servant humbly replied "Despite the accident, you will realize the proof of God in Him being perfect. I can only assure you that He is good and everything He does is perfect. He is never wrong". Outraged by the response, the King ordered the arrest of his servant. While being taken to the prison, he told the King again "God is good and perfect". The next day, the King left alone for another hunt and was captured by savages who used human beings for sacrifice. On the altar, the savages found out that the King didn't have one finger in place. He got released because he was considered not "complete" to be offered as a sacrifice. On his return to the palace, the King ordered the release of his servant and told him "My friend, I now understand the proof of God. God was really good to me. I was almost killed but for a lack of a single finger, I was let go". But I have a question. If God is so good, why did He allow me to put you in the prison? Asked the King. The servant replied "Your Majesty, If I had not been put in prison, I would have gone with you and would have been sacrificed, because I have no missing finger". Everything God does is perfect. That is the proof of God. Often we complain about life and the negative thinking we indulge in kills us most of the times. If only we can think positive, and pursue life with an attitude "Everything happens for the best", probably we would be closer to God. Read More

This is only an extract http://99reallifestories.com where you can read the full blog. It is indeed rare that somebody would walk across to you and tell you to make a wish. When you make a wish, some times you know that it can be easily be fulfilled. For eg. if you make a wish to have a new pair of shoes for your birthday, it can be easily fulfilled. At times, when you make a wish like buying a new house, you know for sure it can be fulfilled though you may not know after how much time that will materialize. However, some people make a wish that most people will doubt whether it can be fulfilled at all or not. As Stephen Covey once said “The best way to predict your future is to create it”. And that’s exactly what one girl did and today her list of accomplishments looks this: Space Camp 7 times Space Academy 3 times Robotics Academy 1 time. Winner of the “Right Stuff Award” MIT for Sally Ride Camp, 3 Sally Ride Camps Attended 3 Space Shuttle launches. Attended engine test firings at Stennis. Invited and attended International Space Camp at Space Camp Turkey in August 2012 Invited and attended Space Camp Canada in July 2013 First person to attend all three NASA Space Camps in the world. Speaks Spanish, French, Chinese, English and some Turkish. First person to complete the NASA Passport Program, going to all 14 NASA Visitor Centers in the US. Ceremony for being the first at KSC on November 18, 2013 in connection with the MAVEN launch Attended the MAVEN launch Invited by NASA to be on the MER 10 panel in Washington DC to discuss the future missions to Mars in the 2030s on January 7, 2013, live on NASA TV. February 14, 2013, I was honored to a full tour of Michoud seeing where the SLS rocket and capsule is being built to take me to Mars. Examined the last external tank left in existence from the Shuttle. Invited to speak at Tedx in Greece. Multiple public speaking appearances to inspire kids of all ages and backgrounds to prepare and work toward their dream. That’s quite a commendable resume indeed, ain’t it? Here is the sad part – she has still not achieved her wish. The so called “accomplishments” above was her preparatory work to make her wish happen in the future. When in future? In the year 2033, according to her plan. She definitely is following what Stephen Covey had said about predicting the future – Create it. The remarkable aspect is she has achieved all these in the last nine years. How does that qualify to be remarkable? Well then, hold your breath…. she is just a 13 old year teen from Louisiana. Her name – Alyssa Carson. Her wish – To go where no one has ever been. To be the first human to visit Mars. Read More

But if I teach my child to read stories and tales at home, then I’m just a Mother. If I plan lessons for a class, I’m called a Curriculum Coordinator. But if educate my child at home, then I’m just a mother. If I sit and talk to children an hour each, a week, addressing their needs, I’m a Speech Therapist. But if I engage and help my child with patience every minute of every day, instill proper values, then I’m just a Mother. If I look after a patient in the hospital, I’m called a Nurse. But, if I nurse my child when they’re ill, awake all night, none able to replace my reassuring presence, then I’m just a Mother. If I manage my boss’s office, I’m called a Secretary, But, if I organize my children’s lives and my home, a place for everything and everything in its place, then I’m just a Mother. If I prepare a meal in a restaurant, I’m called a Chef. But, if I cook nutritious meals daily, made with love, remembered forever, then I’m just a Mother. If I work late worrying about a deal for clients, how to make them as much money as I can, I’m a Career Woman. But, if I stay up worrying and planning my children’s bright future, the bright future of our world, then I’m just a Mother. If I sing on a stage, I’m an Artist. If I sing a lullaby every night, then I’m just a Mother. Lastly, We often tend to forget and realize that being a mother and bringing up our children with the values is the hardest profession of all. Truly, the mother and child relationship may not have any fancy designations, simply because the word “Mother” itself is the sum total of all the designations in the world. Salute to every Mother and would be mothers. Read More

This article was originally published in http://99reallifestories.com After years of hard work and dedicated service to his Company, Josh was being appointed at an elegant reception as the new Director. It was a small function where his wife Claire and wives of other Executives in the company were also invited. It was indeed a proud moment for both Josh and Claire. In an adjacent room, Ann, the wife of the Company’s CEO asked Claire a very odd & usual question – “Does your husband make you happy?” Josh, at that moment was not by her side, but was sufficiently near to hear this unusual question. He was now curious to know what Claire would answer. So he paid attention to their conversation, sitting up slightly, feeling secure, even filling his chest lightly in pride and hope. Definitely, Claire would not publicly degrade her husband and would answer affirmatively. After all, she had always been there for him during their marriage and generally in life. Nevertheless, to both his & the others’ surprise, Claire replied – “No, he doesn’t make me happy…” The room became uncomfortably silent. There was a sudden coldness in the air. Josh was petrified and couldn’t believe what he had just heard. A frown appeared on his face. He couldn’t believe what his wife said, especially at such an important occasion for him. Claire sat up firmly & continued to explain in a modest but stern tone to the others who were present – “No, he doesn’t make me happy… I AM HAPPY. The fact that I am happy or not doesn’t depend on him, but on me.” and she added, “GOD has granted each of us intellect & discretion to reason, interpret & decide. GOD made me the person upon which my happiness depends. I make the choice to be happy in each situation & in each moment of my life. If my happiness were to depend on other people, on other things or circumstances on the face of this earth, I would be in serious trouble!” “Over my life I have learned a couple of things: I decide to be happy & the rest is a matter of ‘experiences or circumstances’ like helping, understanding, accepting, listening, consoling. And with my spouse, I have lived & practiced this many times. Honestly true happiness lies in being content” Josh finally felt relieved & reassured at Claire’s answer and everybody else in the room were simply stuck in awe of Claire’s answer… or rather her way of being in pursuit of happiness. There are those who say I cannot be happy: · Because I am sick. · Because I have no money. · Because it’s too cold. · Because they insulted me. · Because someone stopped loving me. · Because someone didn’t appreciate me. But often we fail to understand that we can choose to be happy in the above circumstances too. The journey of being in pursuit of happiness is not in looking for an end result, but the journey itself. If you are happy in this journey, you are already in pursuit of happiness. And that happiness depends on you. That happiness is you. Read More

This story was originally published in http://99reallifestories.com Chush is a school in Brooklyn, New York that caters to learning disabled children. Some children remain in Chush for their entire school career. At a Chush fundraising dinner, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended. After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question: ‘When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does, is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay, cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?’ The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. ‘I believe that when a child like Shay, who was mentally and physically disabled comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes in the way other people treat that child.’ Then he told the following story: Shay and I had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, ‘Do you think they’ll let me play?’ I knew that most of the boys would not want someone like Shay on their team, but as a father I also understood that if my son were allowed to play, it would give him a much-needed sense of belonging and some confidence to be accepted by others in spite of his handicaps. I approached one of the boys on the field and asked(not expecting much) if Shay could play. The boy looked around for guidance and said, ‘We’re losing by six runs and the game is in the eighth inning. I guess he can be on our team and we’ll try to put him in to bat in the ninth inning.’ Shay struggled over to the team’s bench and, with a broad smile, put on a team shirt. I watched with a small tear in my eye and warmth in my heart. The boys saw my joy at my son being accepted. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Shay’s team scored a few runs but was still behind by three. In the top of the ninth inning, Shay put on a glove and played in the right field. Even though no hits came his way, he was obviously ecstatic just to be in the game and on the field, grinning from ear to ear as I waved to him from the stands. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Shay’s team scored again. Now, with two outs and the bases loaded, the potential winning run was on base and Shay was scheduled to be next at bat. At this juncture, do they let Shay bat and give away their chance to win the game? Surprisingly, Shay was given the bat. Everyone knew that a hit was all but impossible because Shay didn’t even know how to hold the bat properly, much less connect with the ball. However, as Shay stepped up to the plate, the pitcher, recognizing that the other team was putting winning aside for this moment in Shay’s life, moved in a few steps to lob the ball in softly so Shay could at least make contact. The first pitch came and Shay swung clumsily and missed. The pitcher again took a few steps forward to toss the ball softly towards Shay.As the pitch came in, Shay swung at the ball and hit a slow ground ball right back to the pitcher. The game would now be over. The pitcher picked up the soft grounder and could have easily thrown the ball to the first baseman. Shay would have been out and that would have been the end of the game. Instead, the pitcher threw the ball right over the first baseman’s head, out of reach of all team mates. Everyone from the stands and both teams started yelling, ‘Shay, run to first! Run to first!’ Never in his life had Shay ever run that far, but he made it to first base. He scampered down the baseline, wide-eyed and startled. Everyone yelled, ‘Run to second, run to second!’ Catching his breath, Shay awkwardly ran towards second, gleaming and struggling to make it to the base. By the time Shay rounded towards second base, the right fielder had the ball . the smallest guy on their team who now had his first chance to be the hero for his team. He could have thrown the ball to the second-baseman for the tag, but he understood the pitcher’s intentions so he, too, intentionally threw the ball high and far over the third-baseman’s head. Shay ran toward third base deliriously as the runners ahead of him circled the bases toward home. All were screaming, ‘Shay, Shay, Shay, all the Way Shay’ Shay reached third base because the opposing shortstop ran to help him by turning him in the direction of third base, and shouted, ‘Run to third! Shay, run to third!’ As Shay rounded third, the boys from both teams, and the spectators, were on their feet screaming, ‘Shay, run home! Run home!’ Shay ran to home, stepped on the plate, and was cheered as the hero who hit the grand slam and won the game for his team ‘That day’, said the father softly with tears now rolling down his face, ‘the boys from both teams helped bring a piece of true love and humanity into this world’. Shay didn’t make it to another summer. He died that winter, having never forgotten being the hero and making me so happy, and coming home and seeing his Mother tearfully embrace her little hero of the day! Hopefully, you find this a worthy lesson on love and humanity to teach your children. Do share it with them, if you loved it.
