My Musings on Cricket

The hallmark of any professional enterprise should be transparency of the highest form. In the quest to literally eliminate ICL, IPL was born. They literally decimated ICL into non entity within a span of 3 years. IPL succeeded not because of Modi factor alone but because of the infra structure and abundant sponsor’s availability. Any mediocre marketing man would have succeeded equivalent to Modi if not more with such a war chest and backing of BCCI. Anyways cricket has become almost equivalent to a status of religion with millions of fan following. Now it is time to cleanse and regulate BCCI under the home ministry or independent corporate body. It is high time BCCI is declared a public entity requiring them to go public with a minimum pubic holding of 50% and rest being held by institutions and administrators of BCCI. All the accounts and salaries and expenses incurred by the board officials and players remuneration should be made public on quarterly basis just like any corporate set up. Agreed that IPL is pure entertainment bandwagon. Everybody who has jumped into the bogie wants their share of publicity and return for their investment. How does one generate big bucks with the valuations of IPL teams sky rocketing? 1) Selling their stakes to corporates at 5 to 10 times of the invested value 2) Tickets and Endorsement valuation 3) Sponsorships of cricketing gears. 4) Indoor stadium advertisement. 5) Pre and Post IPL events. Rahul on TOI debate on Friday night(16/4/09) pointed out IPL is heading for a mega disaster in the making in terms of match fixing. The strategic breaks between 8th & 16th over of match, usage of walkie talkies by umpires, Bluetooth technology embedded into players etc are classic recipe for match fixing. Big Money will be exchanged underground with unofficial betting in vogue. NOW the moot question if IPL is acknowledged as purely entertainment show, than why not allow official betting is my question? Betting in cricket is official in UK & Australia. The people from the same country form an investigative panel for identifying match fixing what an irony. On the sidelines I heard college students have already begun betting on IPL matches. It is okies as long as it is innocent hobby without long term addiction. But happens if they fall prey to underground elements? A transparent online matrix can be drawn up by the board for franchisees to run the betting ring in IPL. This would mean that the govt. can generate revenue as well as keep tab of the betting circle. Any unofficial betting should be treated as insider trading and jail term should be pronounced. I am sure the BCCI will not loose this opportunity to quickly a launch an official website with all the details from the corporate angle. The time has come for a mass followed sport to be transparent in all aspects of administration. Let us not kill the golden goose of cricket in India. Let us harvest it( cricket) as a credible brand from Incredible India. Disclaimer: This article is a personal musing in the interest of protecting Cricket from murky and non transparent administration. Read More

The golden sand, peaceful waves, safe swimming surface, camel rides, kite flying, etc along with Paradise resort is a total package for the tourist visiting Dakshin kAnasultanra. The distance of Malpe beach from the main town is around 6 kms. It is well connected with all modes of transport, autoriKSHA139w return fare would cost 150 to 200 bucks depending on the waiting time spent on the beach. Buses ply between the port and city and from there the beach is 1 km away. The Malpe port is the entry point to St Mary's Isle too. Why I consider Malpe beach as the safest beach is due to the fact the steep inclination of the waves and sand is absent in Malpe beach. Even a non swimmer can safely venture into the water neck deep and enjoy splashing around for hours to-gether. I remember my dad took me to Malpe beach when our Late PM Indira Gandhi was brutally assasinated on 31st October 1984. The enitre town was barricaded with curfew because of riot like situation. My dad wanted us to enjoy the unscheduled holidays of 3 days. Our daily routine was to visit the beach in the morning, with a black flag installed on our car, to avoid being arsoned by the crowd. The water was greenish blue, and less salty. My dad took me neck deep into the water boldly despite knowning that we did not learn to swim. That was a great feeling with 5 cousins giving us company. This experience became firmly etched in my memory even after 26 years. Today the scenario on Malpe beach has vastly changed from a rustic environs to broad roads and well designed parking bays for vehicles. The crowd is very sober with hardly any foreigners seen loitering around. The beach is total family package and fun spot for an evening. The Sun set hues is magnificient, the photography can be mind blowing with a good digital camera. Malpe happens to be a fishing harbour, the stink can be abnoxious for vegetarians, if one prefers to stay away from the foul smell one of the best option is to visit paradise resort beach of Malpe and avoid St Mary's Isle. The ferry point for going to St Mary's Isle passes through the fishing harbour. The cusines parth2111icularly sea food is excellent. One can have an excellent cusine of South cAnasultanra sea food at Panchratna paradise near High court, Keydioor near Udupi bus stand, Karavalli and Sharada international on the highway. Even Paradise Resorts have put a sign board that they offer accomodation @ Rs 1500 above per day. The various means of reaching the destination from Bangalore are by day train, night train, flight to Mlore, and frequent buses to udupi. One the best recommended mode is day time train travel from Bangalore winding through the Bisle ghat in saklespur, which is a bonus and extremely economical Read More

Diff between Bodyguard & security

Life of a body guard is full of stress, particularly when one is engaged in protecting the life of a celebrity. Whereas a security guard can be sometimes stupid and still getaway with blunders. How often have we noticed a security guard in an organization asking embarrassing questions? I am sure many of us have noticed this goof ups on day to day basis.

Just yesterday in the evening my wife had an appointment with her boss to dicuss an important agenda, when she landed in the premises, she was questioned by the security guard? with regard to her credentials. She was not carrying her id card. Instead she gave him the visiting card, still he was ranting or rather insisting on id card. Just imagine being asked whether you are new to the organization after completing 29 years service to the organization. She had to silently gulp the bitter pill. Instead of getting irritated she just asked him whether I am looking so young? Thanking him for the compliment. He turned around at me and asked what is my status, I just commented that I am her bodyguard, he could not help smiling and let us go inside immediately without any further questioning?

Another incident of security goof up was when I went to a leading corporate entity, I requested him to guide me to wash room to relieve my pressure from the abdomen. He simply pointed to a direction. I followed his direction but was unable to trace the washroom, instead I just asked an employee to guide me. He guided me inside the premises. It was having a security feature of a glass paneled door opening with the id card, he asked me to accompany. I entered and relieved myself. The security guard came rushing and stated I had violated the protocol. He called the boss and complained. The boss came rushing thinking that I had indeed violated the security. But to his surprise, when he heard the incident, he just told the security guard to mind his business without much fuss on this account.

I don’t know why I get into an embarrassing situation most of the time when it comes to security guards. Once I went to receive my boss to Ahmedabad airport. We were a gang of 6 colleagues, we want to photograph him on his arrival. My colleagues were carrying a big garland to welcome him. I thought the occasion requires a photograph for our records. Before his arrival I excused myself and went to the PRO and got his permission to photograph. He gave me the green signal orally. I confidentally went ahead and photographed my boss being garlanded. Suddenly two machine gun totting security guards came and questioned me? My boss and colleagues were shocked. I coolly declared don t worry I will handle them. They took me to their boss for further interrogation. I told their boss I have sought permission well in advance from the airport PRO, he countered checked with the PRO, and confirmed my credentials. He let me go without confiscating the camera. My boss was relieved that I was not behind bars Lol. No wonder I have a surname……dere ….bail.

Well here the morale of the story is for the bosses or the person who is giving an appointment. I feel it is our duty as seniors to inform or alert the security guard that you are expecting so and so either a guest or a customer or a colleague so as to avoid embarrassing situations. Invariably I make it a point to inform the security that I am expecting so and so visitor or even a autorikshaw or a cab which I hire. This arrangement ensures that we are not embarrassed. It happened to me with a Lala company bosses who called for a interview and failed to inform their room number. When I contacted the receptionist of the 5 star hotel, they refused me to connect to their guest stating that it is a security risk. I had to call their corporate office in Delhi and get their cell number and contact the idiotic GM, who did not reveal his room no. It is good that I did not work for such an unprofessional company. No wonder such people are Lalas forever, and you can wonder how will they treat you as an employee. It is obviously slave mentality rather than professional managers. It is not worth working for such organizations even if they pay you a million……do you all agree?

This year was supposed to be tourism boom considering the fact that rumours that the world is going to end as per Mayan calender. More than this psychological factor behind the boom, the fact that Thailand and other Far East countries were considered tourist hot spots after Floods, Tsunami had effected these countries, tourist dwindled. This forced the hotel and airline to drop prices and made the cost affordable, just imagine visiting 6 days Thailand at a package of 30 K per pax. Just when the tourism was looking up there was this earthquake in Kashmir this morning, followed by serial bomb blasts in Thailand. Added to it increased surcharge on travel, hike in jet fuel price in India and many more negative factors. There seems to be cartelisation of sorts among travel operators and airlines to hike tariffs from 81 k to 95 k plus for a package of 13 days tour along with Kashmir to Far East. The absence of full fledged service from Kingfisher has made matters worse for tourist. Even now Kingfisher has been offering a return trip from Bangalore to Srinagar at 11 K per person, we don t how many takers are there since they have lost the confidence of the customers. A full fledged airliner has suddenly realised that the only way to go is through is budget travel. A realisation late in the day. Now coming to uncertain circumstances it is better to postpone plans for holiday this summer and expect the prices of the package tour to cool down due to lack of demand. Otherwise change to affordable destination. What are your plans guys ? Should we undertake a trip as if there is no tomorrow or better to postpone our trip to off season. Do leave behind your suggestions. Read More

There are no trails on the net regarding this destination. We ( Mazhar, Sridhar Anna, Ketan Doshi, Azam )took off from Bangalore towards Hassan on a Swift ( 23/3/2012 ) enroute we dropped in at Shravanabelgola. After lunch we took a steep ascent of 626 steps to reach the historic Gommateswara statue on Vindyagiri hillock. Even though it was summer the evening climb was not so tiring, thanks to the cloudy weather and increased fitness levels. After seeking the blessings of the Lord we proceeded towards Sakleshpur town via the Hassan bye pass. After 4 kms on NH47 at Sakleshpur, a right turn leads towards Hanbal village and from there we proceeded towards the resort Hills, which around 8 kms. The total distance from Bangalore is 260 kms. We were pleasantly surprised by the serene forest type of atmosphere in the resort. After having a nice tasty buffet dinner, we hit the deck in our elevated wooden Indonesian cottage After a nice hot water bath we dressed up for a trek to Pandavara Betta. This is located 7 kms away from the resort where we stayed. The road is rugged in patches till one reaches the destination of Betta Bhaireswar temple. The road is steep in pockets and requires a special driving skill lest the vehicle stalls. It is better to travel in first gear on this steep hillock route. One needs to park the vehicle at the Betta Bhaireshwar temple complex and take a trek of a kilometre to reach the Pandavara Betta. It is speculated that Pandavas during their exile spent some time in the forest surroundings. The view point from the peak covers the beautiful western ghat consisting of Bisle ghat, Chikmangalur and Shiradi Ghat. The trek transgressing the two hillocks takes around half a hour with good fitness levels. After clicking photographs we returned to Betta Bhaireswar temple. Betta Bhaireswar temple appears to have been built during the Vijaynagar times by local chieftain. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva during his fiery avataar. Since the temple was originally located in the forest atmosphere it seems to have lost it sheen. We can safely speculate that people around the region used to sacrifice chicken, goat etc to the Lord, to gain his blessings. There is a separate enclosure for the serpent goddess too. This temple has been renovated by the tourism department after its long neglect. It has been handed over to a priest family, who was nowhere to be seen. The dept. would do the tourist a favour by at least displaying the priests cell number on the gate or door. There is neatly built toilet facility for the tourist to freshen up. Eventually I am sure some sort of accommodation for priest in the vicinity of the temple will be in place citing tourist inconvenience. A water falls is located near the Hills for adventure seekers to soak in. During monsoon the entire environs maybe more welcoming but trekking up the hillock may be a little risky. Tourists can cover this destination from Mudigere which is connecting point for Chickmaglur, Hornadu, Sringeri or Belur. It is worth spending a night in forest like environs and be with nature. Majority of the states misuse the provisions of lifetime taxation to harass the transferable employees of Public sector and private sector. In this context the High court judgement was favourably pronounced for commercial vehicles in Karnataka. They are exempt from paying dual taxation on account of transfer of vehicle from neighbouring state. This was ensured because of powerful lobby of transporters. They went on strike and bought the economy on its knees. When commercial vehicles are exempt from taxation why should individual pvt vehicles which is purely meant for personal use be taxed. It defies logic, and encourages corruption. Further the fundamental right of work and freedom of movement within the country the country too is violated by the recent RTO directive in karnataka. I only hope banks and public sector oil companies take up the issue strongly to ensure that their employees are not adversely affected by the recent directive of RTO to tax Lifetime for public sector employees. If they don t agree to withdraw their account should be frozen as a mark of protest and oil companies should refuse to supply fuel and gas to them as a mark of protest for such retrograde step. It is well known fact that refunds from any government department is hardly forthcoming and taxes are changed year on year. If at all the state governments want to tax lifetime, they should guarantee that the rest of the amount is transferred on line to the migrating state, it should be either a book transfer or online transfer. Why should a transferable employee keep paying life time tax in each and every state he or she is transferred. What is the solution for such a malady. I am sure some members must have faced this painful financial loss considering that it could be nearly 50 K and above for middle and higher end cars. I feel that this draconian form of taxation should be immediately withdrawn and status quo should be restored. Read More

Kodavas have a unique tradition among the Indians probably because of their descent from Alexander the great. The migration of Chandragupta Maurya in 298 BC down to Sravanabelagola gives some credence to this theory. The etymology of the word Koda is mysterious, some identify it as west or hills. My premise is that it refers to the vessel with water carried by women folk during wedding ceremony. The language of Kodavas is a great blend of Malayalam, Mapilla , Beary, Tulu, Kannada & Tamil. How did this occur ? It is primarily because of the migration of workers from all the regions to work in the coffee plantation. Coorgis loved hunting and protected their terrain fiercely. The privilege of possession of gun without license in Coorg district makes their clan unique. I was privileged to be exposed to coorgi lifestyle by default due to my colleague Ganesh. During 1990 BJP had declared a state wide bandh and coorg district was totally blockaded. The entire market was shut down, there were no vehicular movement and I was stranded. Even though I was booked in a lodge there was no way I could have food anywhere in coorg. Ganesh exhibited the hospitality of offering coorgi cusine cooked at home. Akki roti, Kadabu, Avial, Rice, Pandi curry, Sambar etc were some of the foodstuff I relished for 3 days consecutively. We used to distribute Biscuits on ready stock operation in coorg district. Ganesh was adventurous and he wanted to drive the matador van. He managed to give me a shocker when he applied the reverse gear instead of forward gear while moving out of petrol bunk. Luckily it was no major accident, he just managed to hit a jeep stationed in the queue. The greenary around coorg was so inviting that every alternative month I used to visit the terrain. During one of the trips to coorg we just saw a leopard leap across the road, just 20 meters in front our matador van. We were in a exuberant mood since we had managed to sell 12 k worth of factory fresh biscuits on the mysore highway dhaba at 2am. We were carrying hard cash and woke up the distributor at 8 am with cash. ( Lakshmi for some ) The distributor was thrilled to count cash so early in the morning. He treated us with a good breakfast. Probably this achievement would be etched in the history of selling among the colleagues. After my marriage I lost touch with Ganesh for almost 15 years. I managed to trace him in Mangalore. He was running a boys hostel. We caught up with our olden days when we were working to-gether. He invited me to attend his brother-in-laws marriage in October 2010. After attending the wedding I got a deep insight into their family tradition. I participated in the wedding ceremony having their entire range of cuisine along with cocktails. The elaborate ceremony of the wedding with traditional attire was a revelation. I managed to click photos and some videos in the bargain. One such photo I gifted Ganesh as a blow during my next visit for marriage of his niece. It was an ultimate shocker when I received the news from his sister-in-law that Ganesh was no more. She told me that he had passed away due to cancer within a month on 11th December 2010. I spoke to common colleague Nagabushan who told me that he used to be nicknamed as Mamoothy. More than being handsome hunk he was down to earth, filled with empathy and co-ordial relationship. The charm of visiting coorg again will never be same for me my family. We wish the departed soul to rest in peace. Our sincere condolence to his family and relatives for the bereavement. RIP GANESH WE WILL MISS YOU FOREVER ! May God bless your soul Read More

Sometimes he used to actively lead the protest against workers class in general. He used to adviced me to get associated with RTI to effectively fight corruption. He wanted me to become an RTI activist. Whereas I was actively associated with Civil Defence at that point of time. We had a huge debate one night, he stuck to his point of view and I was steadfast on mine. There is a popular saying that there areno winners in an argument. It was proved in this case. He had come to attend my uncle's funeral who passed away with cancer. He too was a union president and retired as director of a PSU bank. It was rather sad that he too received lesser honour in his death despite helping so many of his colleagues in ensuring promotion, transfer, recruitment etc. My cousin must have realised his futility of being associated with union activities. The subsequent incident proved beyond doubt that being associated with Union does not guarantee that you are protected or privileged. After attending my uncle's funeral we moved towards Mangalore from Bangalore since he did not get his railway ticket. I agreed to drop him at Mangalore and return by car. We reached a union guest house of a PSU bank in Mangalore he stated that he is privileged to get accommodation if it is vacant. But he was refused accomodation by the secretary of the Union. What a tragedy, he was crestfallen. Suddenly an idea flashed in his mind that he should take up the matter with his union leaders and obtain an apology from the union which refused him accomodation despite being vacant. Otherwise the union could take up an agitation by ensuring stop supplies of fuel to the union members who refused to oblige being in Oil PSU industry. My cousin was further disappointed to the core. He realised that he should rather concentrate on his family particularly his daughter was heading towards crucial PUC exams. He gave all union activities and focussed towards family endeavours. I found that he had become totally depressed and sober in July last. He may have realised the futility of being in the union. Suddenly one day I received the news that he passed away due to heart seizure in September. Good BYE Comrade. Read More

Scenario 1 : MumbaiChatrapathiShivajiAirport: 2004 After a nice holiday, shopping and dining experience at Taj Mumbai, my brother-in-law and family of 5 members were to take off to Paris on a reputed international flight next day early morning. I was surprised to receive a call from my sister stating that they are staying back in Mumbai and they invited us to join for Lunch at Juhu Centaur. We were surprised that the airline had been overbooked by 20 odd seats. I believe during holiday season cancellations too are high. The airline offered free boarding and lodging and next day their tickets were confirmed on priority, lest the airline incurs expense on boarding on lodging again. Scenario 2 : BangaloreOldAirport: 2007: Once again my brother in law and family were on a vacation to home town, in between he receives an emergency call from the office that there is a crisis because of client default. He had to cut short his holiday and return to Paris. There was no refund of ticket and instead he was charged double the price of the ticket for using the same airline under code sharing arrangement. He ended up paying 55 K for a fresh ticket and lost 18 K in unutilized ticket. Scenario 3 : MumbaiDomesticAirport: 1996 : We receive an emergency call from my mother at 6 am, that my father was no more. We did not carry sufficient cash, nor could we disturb anybody from borrowing money early morning. In those there were limited ATMs for drawing cash from the bank. Ultimately we reached airport and flashed the credit card for booking ticket. The employee at the booking counter rudely told us to come back later. We were crestfallen whether we will get the ticket, whether the credit card will be approved, and filled with tension. Suddenly a Jewish executive of the airline comes and enquires, on knowing our plight, he issues an order to release the ticket and offers us a complimentary breakfast in their lounge. We were relieved from travel tension and delighted at the response of a foreigner. Scenario 4 : GauhatiAirport: 2009 : We were literally on a last leg of our holiday trip to North East Trip. When we checked in at the airport we found that the airport was bustling with passengers. Suddenly we realized all flights are delayed due to pollution from the river bed of Bramhaputra. There was no ILFS landing system, I doubt with the simulator too flights would have been able to land. There was enmass cancellation of flights announced as the day progressed. I was watching the plight of the passengers some were on emergency trip, some were on personal trip and some were on official trip. Suddenly in the evening it was announced that probably 4 flights will be able to land and take off instead of 12 flights. Being an off season ( exam season ) I was sure that only 30% to 40% occupancy of flights. Suddenly the ticket price shot up to 18 K for a business classs instead of regular 5 K. Scenario 5 : PortBlairAirport: 2005 : We were surprised to find that our co-travellers returning back to Hotel at YMCA Port Blair. They had to return because their flight was over booked .and the airline concerned did not offer them an accommodation nor conveyance. They had paid 13 k and whereas had paid only 5 k by the same airline. The same airline was supposed to be reporting Red in their balance sheet. Next day both our families took off in the same flight on time without much hassles of cancellation due to overbooking.
