Cherrapunjee is in the state of Meghalaya, the East Khasi Hills, also compared to the Rolling hills of Scotland. It the wettest place on planet Earth. It holds the record for the highest rainfall.
Cherrapunjee is the traditional capital of hima, the Khasi tribal chief. The original name of Cherrapunjee is Sohra, but during the British era, it was referred to as 'Churra' by them and eventually the name Cherrapunjee came to be.
Though Cherrapunjee receives the highest rainfall it faces acute water shortage and the local people have to trek miles to collect drinking water. There is a statue of David Scott, a British Administrator of the northeast, who was posted there during the British raj. The inhabitants of Cherrapunjee and around are known as khasis.
Cherrapunjee is also famous for its bridges. Over hundred of years the locals have mastered the technique of growing roots of the trees into large bridges, the bridges are secure and strong, takes more than 10 years to complete the process but lasts a lifetime.
Valleys and around Cherrapunjee are covered with lush green and forests. A trip to Cherrapunjee from shillong, the capital of Meghalaya is a couple of hours away, is worth taking the trip there if one is going to Shillong. The journey from Shillong to Cherrapunjee is by road.
