Indu Sarkar is a story of a girl Indu who is timid and stammerer. She has been repeatedly rejected by everyone, by her parents, teachers, grooms, by everyone due to her timidity and stammering. Finally she has got married to a civil servant followed by'Emergency' declared by Indira Gandhi and witnessed exploitation of people by the government. Though original names are not used in the film.
So, the film revolves around her struggle against the government depicting the horrible and scary time of emergency. But the time really never feels like horrible and scary in the film. This is the biggest problem. The vibe and tone is like a over the top melodrama. Actors conveys bombastic dialogues with loud backgrounds and there the film fails. Some crowd scenes even look like amateur. Indu's struggle tries to connect with you but the landscape of the film, screenplay and dialogues fail to accompany her.
Kirti Kulhari is good, really good in the role of Indu. Neil Nitin Mukesh is alright but again his character is so ridiculed it seems like a caricature of Sanjay Gandhi. He is called Chief in the film. Ha.ha.Other casts does their job good including Anupam Kher.
The music is by Anu Malik and it's very generic, nothing to shout about.
The cinematography is OK but a good visual is nothing without effective screenplay. The film looks good but sounds like old school bollywood drama.
On the whole the film is bad. Although I have never been the fan of Madhur Bhandarkar I like'Fashion'. I really want to appreciate him for making a film about emergency and take it to the theaters but I can't. The film is just amateurish and clumsy.
