"Lets go to Tchi" said my girl buddy, the wife of an Australian diplomat.
"Chee?" I thought. Isn't that like saying: lets go to ewww? or: lets go to yukkk?
sigh. but in order to look cool and for the sake of being "with it", I grit my teeth and flashed my biggest, sunniest fake smile and said "Sure!"
Now my fate was sealed. There was no turning back and I was looking around frantically for an exit. my 20-20 vision doing nothing for me at this point.so with resigned fate and false bravado, I went. and was very pleasantly surprised!
Tchi as it tuned out was not Chee.it was actually "Tchi".aaaah these zen names. what did a cultural ignoramus like myself know? Anyway as it turned out the restaurant was tucked away in a quiet neighborhood off Queens Road(Edward Road to be precise) Since it's in a by lane, parking is abundant.
Lush greenery and sounds of flowing water greet you as you walk up a flight of steps where the surrounding walls are painted an impossible red. a huge bowl of floating flowers and soft tinkling music welcome you as do the silent and discreet waiting staff.
Since we had gone for lunch and even though we're both non-smokers, we chose to sit in the smoking section.don't ask why.
I looked around with interest at the well appointed decor, the sound of water rustling and the clink of cutlery on crystal from other tables. The restaurant had a very pleasant aroma of freshly cooked Chinese food and I was ready to eat!
We ordered Freddie Prawns, Crispy Lamb in Hot Bean sauce(dry) and a portion of Mee Cha( veg Hakka noodles)
I'm telling you, the one thing I didn't expect was the food to be this good! Awesome actually.
The portion size was pretty good and we ended up packing the left overs.the prices were very reasonable too. we paid 800 rupees between the two of us and this included the dishes mentioned above as well as a couple of soft drinks and a soup!
I have been there several times since and the food has been consistently good. I've even had a couple of large parties' catering done from them. They handled those very well and were very reasonable, professional and courteous.
I would recommend this place to anyone who loves food, courteous staff and a good ambiance.
