Well, here we will be having another movie which looks like Company 2 from the daily soap house Balaji. I liked Company a lot, but I don’t like copycats, may be the director, Milan Luthriya, whose name I could not remember hearing before, is highly influenced by the movie making of Ramu showing the dark side of Mumbai underworld. Again I did not expect anything extraordinary from the production house whose main expertise is to make boring daily soaps that run in generations.
Well, that was my preconceived notions about the movie, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. Still I decided to check the movie in this weekend, because, it was dealing with the story of legendary Haji Mastan. Though few more actors including the Big B tried this role before, and I must say very successfully, still I wanted to watch Ajay as he is my favorite.
At the interval I was just spellbound by the movie I was watching. No, this is not at all a Company 2, it is not at all anything like previously attempted underworld movies. It won’t hit you hard; it will make you smile with satisfaction of experiencing a wonderfully presented love story, the love of an ordinary man for his city which gives him everything, fame, power, money and his lady love. He confesses that he is not taking the normal usual path, but took many shortcuts, broke laws, smuggled in materials where there is a government restriction, but never harmed anyone, never killed a person, never touched a gun. He was very clear with his conscience; he will go to the height with friendship and not with hatred and violence. He cannot harm the city which gave him his name, Sultan, as he had a heart of a Sultan.
His love life is also very romantic and the way he wooed the superstar Rehana(Kangna Ranaut) is really sweet. But he is becoming an idol for every teenager from lower economy group who wanted to be as famous and big as Sultan. Shoaib Khan(Emraan Hashmi) is one of those who believed that one day he can be another Sultan. To reach that height he can do anything, he is not answerable to his own conscience, and he wants to reach there fast, very fast. But he does not realize that what made Sultan such a legend is not greed and hatred but a big heart full of love for the poor and suppressed one. The next half of the movie shows this fight, the fight between the two ideologies, between bad and good. At last bad thrives by Shoaib killing his mentor and thus starts the process of making of Dawood Ibrahim and finally he bombs the city which was once loved and protected by Sultan.
The main story is being narrated by cop Agnel Wilson(Randeep Hooda) who placed Shoaib against Sultan with a plan that Shoaib will be his “mohra” as he was the son of one of his subordinates. But his plan failed miserably as later on he lost his control over Shoaib and finally the Mumbai blast happened. So taking the responsibility of the Mumbai blast, Wilson tried to kill himself and when he was saved he narrated this story to his senior.
Acting wise Ajay is out of this world, after Apaharan and Omkara we are having another excellent performance from him. Emraan was at his carrier best. Both the lead actresses Kangna and Prachi Desai(opposite Emraan) were good at their part. Randeep was also good though more was expected from him and from his role. Direction is excellent and the music is too good. Already a couple of songs from the movie are chartbusters. The only drawback of the movie is the climax; you may feel that the movie ends abruptly, all of a sudden. You may not realize that it’s going to end and expect some more from Shoaib, like a planned execution of Mumbai blast, but suddenly you will realize the movie is over.
Overall, after a long gap I came out of the hall fully satisfied. Don’t miss this one. It’s a must watch.
