I am staying currently in the U.S. My daughter bought a new ELANTRA 2005 in December 2004. I have driven more than 2000 miles in this car.
It is a superb car as the other two reviewers have called it. My daughter's car is automatic and in the U.S. all cars are left hand drive; so it took a day for me to get used to it and of course, driving on the right side of the road.
The Elantra they are selling in the American market is tops and comparable to Honda civic and Accord. It is better than Toyota Camry. The pick up is excellent and the car handles well at high speeds too. Of course this vehicle is not for ordinary mortals in India as it gives about 30 miles to the gallon.
As Petrol is cheap in the U.S. it is OK. The A.C. is very good and cools quickly; the stereo system has six speakers. The interiors are very good looking. The upholstery and the steering wheel are lovely. It has air bags for safety.
Nothing seems to have been overlooked by the manufacturers. The car is not very expensive in the U.S. My daughter paid $13,000 for it; which makes it under Rs. 6 lakhs.
In India I learn that an Automatic Elantra would be in the vicinity of Rs. 11 lakhs or more, which is highway robbery, if you ask me. I think people in India should take up this matter with the Hyundai dealers there. I do not think I will be able to afford one when I get back to India. I shall buy either an Accent, or Esteem or Indigo or Versa, for they are cheaper. If they bring down the price of Elantra to about 6 or 7 lakhs, hmmmm it shall be the car for me.
Pros : Everything about it
Cons: Only its price in INDIA
