If you haven't already tried Google you are in for a big treat.
Google is without doubt the fastest and best search engine on the web. I cannot recall the last time that I failed to find what I was looking for when using Google, if there ever was a time.
I don't want to knock some of the other great search engines such as AltaVista and HotBot which are good resources in their own way, but Google really does outshine any of them for simple searches.
One of the most pleasing things about Google is the fact that the pages are not saturated with advertising (though I am not sure how they make money!). The pages load in a second or two, even the very front page of the site.
When doing a search you have the choice of two buttons. The first button is labelled 'Google Search' and gives a normal search with 10 results. 10 results may not sound great, but believe me that is all you usually need. The second button is labelled 'I'm Feeling Lucky' and basically takes you straight to the top site in the search rankings. I think this is a really nice touch because it saves time and shows that Google is not unnecessarily trying to keep you inside their own site.
They do have an excellent advanced search facility, but to be honest I have rarely felt the need to use it. They also have links to other pages on their site such as Google products, add a site etc. but the links are in grey text and very unobtrusive.
For any webmasters out there - google do a great affiliate program through which you can earn three cents per search. (quick update - it is down to one cent as of 1st September) Not only will you earn a few quid, you will also be introducing your visitors to the best search engine on the web.
http://www.google.com - give it a go, you won't regret it.
