Some love stories last for a day … some for a month …. Some for a few years … but some last forever. And it is that kind of love that we yearn for all our life.
Sure you get to see such couples who love each other soooo much …. But only in movies.
And probably that is why Ghost is one of my most favourite love stories ever.
A young couple irresistibly in love with each other separated because of an accident. Although the man dies his soul refuses to depart from earth because he knows that the one he loves the most is in dire need of his protection.
A marriage where the love goes beyond even ‘till death do us part’.
From the moment the film opens it takes you in a world where nothing but love matters.
A world which is so confined to two people who care immensely for each other, who take interest in each other’s interests – remember the scene where Demi is working with clay and Patrick comes to her.
And then there is trouble in paradise.
Patrick is killed by his own friend because of money.
He doesn’t realize he is dead because he can’t be.
And then the journey starts into the unknown.
We have seen in Hindi movies many a times how the soul stays behind for revenge and they are always dressed in white(or in the case of Aishwarya in Mohabbatein in designer clothes).
But in Ghost, Patrick is shown to be wearing the same outfit he was when he meets with the accident. Hmmm no wasting money on the dress department here.
Enter Whoopi Goldberg who plays a cheat psychic but is suddenly blessed with the power to hear the dead.
She obviously freaks out. But ends up helping Patrick to save his wife from the villain.
The beauty of the story is more beautifully shown in each scene.
The scene where Whoopi slides a coin and Patrick rolls it up the door to show Demi that she isn’t a fraud and that she isn’t lying.
The scene where Patrick’s soul enters Whoopi’s body so that he can touch Demi for one last time.
All these scenes almost give you goose bumps.
Coupled with terrific performances from the lead actors this film could be termed as one of the finest ever.
Not to forget the guy who plays a ghost in the train and the way he initially despises Patrick’s soul but then helps him learn the trick of the trade.
Like said earlier, the film could well be an old hindi film but the execution is what makes it so special.
In fact our people here tried to make a rehash of the same subject in a flick called Pyaar Ka Saaya with long-forgotten Rahul Roy and Amrita Singh.
Latest rumour heard: Ram Gopal Varma’s next film titled Bhoot is also supposed to be inspired from Ghost. Well, Mr Varma it is a little late in the day to get inspired, what say?
Back to the original, Ghost is a must-watch for all film lovers. Although one doesn’t get to see Patrick’s dance moves, he is as charming as he was in Dirty Dancing.
