Maria who is on journey to find what true love is but ends up letting her own life guide her. She enters a life that leads her down the path of sexual awakenings and almost leads to her self-destruction when she is introduced to all sides of sexual experience.
These are the words on wikipedia about the book. But I have a different opinion about it. Paulo Coelho is one man who never writes anything without a bit of prior research. He finds out about the facts and figures and then does he start writing his book. This is also a well researched book I can say.
The book actually talks about a girl Maria who hails from some remote village but doesn't want to ruin her life there itself (that is her perception of life in the same village of hers). So she leaves the house in search of prosperity, riches and her one true love. She like most girls from villages is lured by a man claiming to get her a great job in a big city and she falls for the false promises.
Once there she sees the truth which she has always waited to see just that the truth is not what she imagined. She sees pain and suffering and no earning unlike her image of it. She had made her mind up and left on her journey, so she decides to live ahead and try her luck.
This turns out to be the worst decision of her life and changes the whole course of her life. She ends up in only one place where she is able to earn money easily - A Brothel. This is what is described as the sexual awakening in wikipedia. She learns the innermost needs of men. She learns the different ways of pleasureing men and getting them to feel good about being with a woman. at a time in the book the author also mentions that few men just wanted to talk and do nothing because they felt very lonely.
Don't we all agree we sometimes need someone we can tlk to. We find someone ourselves, maybe another person, maybe a diary, maybe a blog, maybe a pet, and these men chose a sex worker; so what is wrong in that I say. Ok, lets move on. Let me tell you in one sentence what I feel about the book. This book talks about a larger meaning of Love which we will understand only if we feel the way the girl has lived and all that she has learn in the higher sense of being. Isn't that too much. I know it does feel that way when we read a book by Paulo Coelho.
She has always wanted a life full of colour and money and riches and a man to give her love unlimited. After she starts her life in the Brothel she begins to feel the reality of a person truly in love. All tha she had pictured shatters and she finds out that love is in-the heart and it finally reaches out to oblivion but never does it end. Life ends but love doesn't.
When she never realized she was trying to find love even in her customers and they in her but neither feel the bondage. She does find a man who feels like he is the one for her and what happens after that changes her life and her whole perception of love. This is one book which I would dare compare to any other because I do not believe that any other author ever has written about a woman in the way that Paulo Coelho has being a man. Hats off to him!!!
Any title that paulo has written are all about a quest to find oneself and the greater love, the love of God, the Love of being and not the love of material. Spiritual teachings are rae in this world today but he is one who adopts normal stories for spiritual realities.
As a final word, please read this book with an inclination for a spiritual learningand not the need for a sexual awakening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
