After a long gap saw Aamir khan film in theatres, his own home production Sitaare Zameen Par directed by R.S.Prasanna.The film as we know is a sports drama set amongst intellectually challenged players and is a remake of the Spanish film Champions.
The film is about a good but wayard basketball short height coach(Aamir Khan) based in New Delhi who lands on task of training intellectually challenged overgrown kids for the Special basketball tournament and the challenges, the fun and the growth in thinking in the progress.
The film is a spiritual sequel of Aamir khans brilliant Taare Zameen Pe -2007.It also touches another fav genre of Aamir-sports drama, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Lagaan and Dangal. The film even before its release was getting mixed reactions due to being a remake and from critics of Aamir khan.Also the reason was off late Aamirs films have not been great and the trailers of this had mixed reactions.
If we talk about the film, the film definitely has its share of flaws.To begin with Aamirs wide eyed acting and "O Teri" act from Dhoom 3 also tries to resurface here at times.Then the film lacks engaging and thrilling match moments unlike Lagaan or Dangal.Also since it is spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Pe the emotional impact is missing(maybe it was purposeful to keep it light), and the songs are also average. However inspite of all this the film still works, firstly for its "Apna Apna Normal" concept and secondly for the comedy and entertaining scenes.The performances of the players(many of them are actually intellectually challenged actors) are fine and comic timings was good.The supporting performances by Gurpal, Dolly and Bijendra Kala are first rate.Genelia is ok and the direction also is decent.Aamir Khan though is not as brilliant as his films till Secret Superstar, but overall is definitely decent and much better than Lal Singh Chadha and Thugs Of Hindustan.
The biggest triumph of the film however remains that they have not tried to generate sympathy or over dramatic emotions for the intellectually challenged people but instead present them with their fun, their lives fully aware of their weakness.
On the whole though Sitaare Zameen Par may not match to Aamir Khans cult Taare Zameen Pe or Dangal, yet it is a good film having a message and also brings back Aamir Khan as a superstar and a FilmMaker!
