We get to catch a glimpse into the unseeable future with science fiction films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey(1968), Star Wars(1977), Star Trek (1979), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial(1982), Aliens (1986), Back to the Future: Part 2(1989), Jurassic Park (1993), Gattaca(1997), Matrix(1999), and A.I. Artificial Intelligence(2001).
We have also had a chance to go back in time with historical dramas/epics like Gone with the Wind (1939), Gandhi(1982), Amadeus (1984), Schindler's List (1993), Titanic(1997), Gladiator (2000), and Passion of the Christ (2004).
Even books describe fantasy worlds which are well beyond our imaginations. This includes the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and the Lord of the Rings Triology by J.R.R. Tolkien. Who can forget the novel, The Time Machine by H.G. Wells?
Let's face it. As human beings, we are constantly fascinated with the unknown and mystery that goes along with it. But what if there was a real time machine that could transport us anywhere through time? Would we decide to go to the past or future? What would we see? Who would we meet? And what would we do? Would this change who we are today or not?
If I could travel in time, here are the three time periods I would ZAP to:
1. 1950s in America
Since I'm a huge James Dean fan, I would certainly have liked to interview the great icon. I would ask him questions like, "What is it like to be a big star?," "What did it take to achieve such success?," "What is it about acting that really drives you?" and "What was your childhood like?" Yesterday marked Jimmy's 56th death anniversary. Maybe I could have warned him about September 30th, 1955 but fate had other plans.
2. 1980s in America
During the 1980s, I was a small kid. I don't remember much about the decade except a few movies/tv shows, slap on bracelets, jelly shoes, and cabbage patch kids. Being a teenager or young adult during this time would have rocked. The music was what made this decade unforgettable. I would have definitely attended some concerts and cranked up MTV, which made its debut in 1981. Back then, MTV actually aired music videos. The fads were uniquely one of a kind. The fashion on the other hand was a different story. But some of the 80's fashion trends are coming back today with a bang!
3. 1950s-1970s in India
Final stop would be in India when my parents were growing up. I have heard so much about their childhood and fond memories. It would be interesting to see them as kids, teenagers, and young adults. What were their school days like? What were their families like? Who were their friends? How did they grow up into the beautiful and loving people they are now? It would no longer be a story of the past but something I could clearly visualize and witness for myself.
If you could travel anywhere in time, where would you go and why? Please share your responses!
